It usually just wankers on XBL who're wanking on about who shouldn't be there or getting far too excited about winning.
And loathe and I'm to say it, it's usually yanks.
The Brits tend to use racist slang or homophobic diatribes.
Everything on XBL gets muted. Everything! Unless I know the person on the other end of the microphone.

Any handheld game also gets muted after about 5 minutes. I'm usually playing them on the move, and all dialogue tends to appear in subtitled form, so sound would be antisocial and unnecessary.

Also, I didn't exactly mute Assassin's Creed 2, but I did change all the dialogue to Italian. Don't know why, it just seemed like a good idea.

Lego Racers. Using Lego bricks to customise your car and racer is fun but the music is like kicking a squeeling clown in the honker. (No, the OTHER honker.)

We have this guy in our clan who we fondly call our resident DJ. It's micspam at it's best, we even put all-talk on for it.

Sometimes he just randomly starts spamming songs and we have a good ol' karaoke night.

The fiddle in that SC2 song is completely epic though. And well, Hell March is just Hell March.
Sadly they're RTS not turn based.

OT: Never needed to mute any games,I just tolerate it all.

Sorry 'bout that. I haven't exactly had a good night rest, so my reading ability is sort of impaired.

Yeah I'll just edit that out then.

I mute all online shooters and really easy games so I can listen to my own music mixes.

The one that I can remember is the most recent installment of the Ace Combat series. Listening to the voice actors pronounce those made-up country names, hell, listening to the voice actors at all, made me mute the speech and background music.
I played my own music, primarily Highway to the Danger Zone on continuous loop. Completed all the achievements that way.

I usually end up muting sim city when I play it. Other than that, I don't think I mute any others.

Ummm... Not a single game, actually. Sometimes I turned the music off in WoW to replace it with my own, but I didn't do that very often as WoW's music is generally sublime.

Saints Row - The same reason as GTA but i left the voice and sound effects on, they were actually done well.
Awwww didn't you like Ezzzzy FM? That station in combination with ploughing through hordes of pedestrians might be one of the funniest things ever. I just could not stop giggling while doing that.

Well, I always mute turn based strategy games, because they usually have pretty boring music

And...ok that's actually all I can think of.

i kind of liked starcraft 1's music better, but that might be because starcraft 2 doesn't always play it

And of course we cant forget
ironically, starcraft was the only game i muted entirely because "zerg3.wav" was corrupted and would crash my game if it tried to play.

I really only mute games if I have a movie or music in the background, and I usually only play games that can either be followed through text I've played through before or don't care about story.

I also usually play handheld games without sound.

Dragonquest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.
HAAAAAAATE THAT SOUNDTRACK! The walking on the map piano/flute music is fine but the battle tune is beyond obnoxious and with as much time as you spend fighting it just gets muted altogether.

I often turn off the music in games like civ4 and galciv and put on my own music.
Never turn off sound effects.
