Games like Quake 3 on the Dreamcast... I would put the TV on mute and play my own CDs on my stereo-system... That was before the days when you could upload MP3s onto your console...

Always mute the music in Borderlands.
A game like that deserves much better music, so I just use my own.

I also play music once in a while when I play Team Fortress 2, just to give it some more oomph.

Mirror's Edge for iPad. In co-op mode, the sound effects consist of male and female grunting that would probably not be allowed on TV...

The only game I've ever muted is WoW, seeing as I played my own music during such, or had to listen to a bunch of twelve year old twats and forty year old breeders prattle along on Vent.

Whenever a game's music becomes repetitive to the point of nausea I start looking for other things to listen to.

I'll use Castlevania Harmony of Despair as an example of this compared with, say Super Mario Bros. 3.

In SMB3, yes the music is repetitive, but for all intents and purposes, you'll probably only hear a song in 90-120 second bursts before it changes (ending the stage, death, etc.)

Whereas in Castlevania HoD, the stages take at least 10 minutes to complete, and the songs are, I swear, on a 45 second loop.

That drives me nuts.

It makes me greatly appreciate the X360's mandated "custom soundtrack" option every game has that lets me play off my computer's hdd.

I remember growing up, my dad would always complain that music in games is the same over and over again. Back then, as a spastic yute, I chose to ignore this. Now in my later years, I'm more aware when something is being, irritating. And my tolerance for repetition is significantly lower these days.

Hmm...
After listening to the first ten minutes of dialogue in the original Halo (and the awful sound effects for enemies and weapons), I just muted it and put in my own dialogue.
ahhh i love that its like you wrote the game!

Interesting Bug Report!

During the Cargo Boat level of the first Deus Ex, my speakers will produce the worlds loudest humming EVAR in the hangar.

Oddly enough, it goes away INSIDE the boat.

I'm talking about this level:

Only Baten Kaitos. The in-fight voices were all right, but the voice actors couldn't do dialogue to save their lives.

Made me glad they corrected that in Baten Kaitos Origins.

I remember muting the TV while playing Ocarina of Time, I couldn't stand Navi at all..
Blatant overreaction, if true.

I mute Little Big Planet. The music gets old after a while so I use my own music instead.

Usually after a couple hundred games the commentary finally bugs me enough to turn it off in just about every sports game I've played.

Sometimes, you can omit the word "hundred" from that sentence.

Also, Portal is a very interesting game without the sound. You really see just how writing-driven it is.

Bayonetta - I can only take so much "Fly Me To The Moon" being crooned by some pop-tart before I want to claw my ears off. Also, anything I've played on XBL, because... well, you know...

FEAR Fucking 1. The sound of the guys footsteps along with the terrible music gave me headaches if I had the sound up for longer than half an hour.

FF X---at points I couldn't stand Tidus' voice acting.

FF VII, during the "run around the same 5 meter area back and forth until you have enough random encounters to hit level 99" part of that playthrough. I love the music in FF VII, but having to listen to the same area music and to the battle theme 729837 times in a row would have been... problematic.

Navi made me shout "shut up!" back at the screen at times, but I never thought of muting _Ocarina of Time..._

GTA 3.

The sound of horns and repetitive dialogue of pedestrians really does my head in. Also the soundtrack is awful ... Really awful.
