Prototype.

Alex was such a tool. "I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THIS TO ME GRR GRR GRR" and then he ran over a large group of people with tank.
But then he shows his humanity later. "Am I doing the right thing?" he thought aloud, and then he ran over a large group of people with tank.
It didn't help that I went out of my way to terrorize civilians after being a good guy wasn't rewarded.

Misguided youth, that one.

Leon S Kennedy. I dont know why, but something just really annoys me about the guy. It's probably the hair.

Altiar. How could he not see the betrayal coming? Really.

I thank god that Locust attacked Sera and started a global war because if they didn't then Marcus Fenix and the rest of the super manly cast of Gears of War would be assholes and douchebags. Can you seriously imagine them being anything else? In other words: I hate you Marcus Fenix!

Would you really say that the experience a white dude has playing CJ is similar to what a black dude has playing as, say , Gordon Freeman?
Yep, I would say that. Gordan Freeman didn't talk though so it's a bit tougher to discern but a picture is worth a thousand words. Especially if you're seeing that picture in almost every game you ever play.

Personally, I don't think its a matter of race as much as it is culture.
These two are pretty much inseperable. Especially in the perspective of how GTA works.

Nobody would say anything against Louis from L4D but CJ was a crim who hung around with twats and spoke with such a thick street dialect, I had to put the game on mute just so I would stop jumping him under cars.
"Its CJ, fooool! You remember dat!"
Oh SOME people did & would. Louis was a token he does not undermine the basic premise.
Right on, Gordon probably wasn't the best example to use but he was the whitest video game character I could think of, besides Kratos, who's voiced by a black dude, so that would be another crap example. Anyway, thats interesting none the less and may I ask your feelings towards CJ, do you find him a likable/ sympathetic/ relatable protagonist?
Well I liked CJ, he wasn't fleshed out as much as Niko was/is but Tommy Vercetti wasn't fleshed out as much as CJ was, so it becomes apparent that the short comings of the characters are merely the short comings of the developmental teams and minds behind them.

CJ is still the most Altruistic character to come out of the GTA series (with the exception of Vic Vance). Sure CJ is no Zasalamel and lacks the compelling element of overt signs of "formal education", but he reeks of statist victimization. The developers did not do a good job of explaining his back story, his neighbourhood, his peers, his rivals and his situations. Rock Star had a great chance to shed some light on social issues, they were in the midst of (and had access to) a lot of articulate people who could have easily gave them direction. I like CJ for what little he was, a rare character, a potential diamond in the rough that may have opened the doors for better characters of his ilk, it's a shame he ultimately failed to reach the larger demographic because of lack of experience with dealing with this archetype (or maybe a shameless detest). However this falls at the feet of the developers not CJ, not his archetype, not his supposed culture. Maybe if they had gotten David Simon or someone with more passion for the social-realist genre they could have done a better job with his story and environment.

But hey if at first you don't succeed try, try again right?

With the experience the developers have, they will have next to no excuses next time around.

I'm fairly tolerant so the most annoying thing for me was Chris in Resident Evil 5 saying 'erb' instead of 'herb'

Edge Maverick from Star Ocean: TLH.

At times I honestly felt like leaving the game because of my dislike for him.

I never really hate the main character. Simply because:

A) the character is actually -me- (consider football management, strategy games, god games, etc.).
B) I actually start to feel for the character.
C) I can somewhat control the character's journey/ordeal, therefore it's somewhat (but not quite) a combination of A and B.
D) The character is a lifeless shell, and nothing more than the avatar through which I bring chaos and destruction.

Issac Clarke.
They can't possibly expect us to symphatize with that chunk of metal. Note to writers : if you can't give the character a personality, don't give him a love interest.

Also CJ in San Andreas was a whiny *****. He let everybody push him around, he even got raped at one point of the game. I didn't hate him though, he was just irritating.

The main character on Infinite Undiscovery comes immediately to mind.
There is a small sampling of what players confront in this Unskippable [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/unskippable/697-Infinite-Undiscovery] video.
