Sephiroth, Kefka, and Prinny Baal. Not technically a final boss, but harder than the last boss in the plotline.

Also, for spectacle, Doviculus. Not fun to play, but awesome to experience. PAINKILLER!

EDIT: Crud, I forgot Lavos.

Tor from Iji, especially on Maximum Charge. Didn't think he was crazy enough before? Well switch on his suit before the fight. It's practically bullet hell but still insanely awesome.

The biggest drawback to it though, and the creator said it himself in his fight on the highest difficulty "Nobody likes the Skysmashers." Pretty much flying turrets that shoot heavy beams that will knock you off your feet.

Although the best part was the music.

Another would have to be Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex. As much as the game was getting gimmicky and the loading times were awful, it still managed to do boss fights well especially the final which required you to use all of the special abilities you've earned so far to survive.

What games do you think of when you hear "epic final boss"?

IMO Metroid Prime (the first one) had a really spectacular final boss.

More recent games typically just don't have the same quality of final bosses anymore.
Tetris. The end guy is INCREDIBLE.

Lavos from Chrono Trigger.
Too easy. Unless....

Your average level is less than 10. Now that's an epic fight.

Edit: Yes, they are at full health.
It's also tough if you try beating it with just Chrono.
That sounds fun! Might have to try it some time.

It is! just go new game + and after marle goes through time to 600 AD and you have to follow her, don't, and go to the right telepod and touch the sparkle to fight lavos. I recommend a Haste Helm and the accessory that makes you have 75% less MP consumption...can't remember what it's called.

Can't believe no-one mentioned it yet but Zeus in god of war 2, that was fucking epic.
Also, MGS4 and the scarecrow encounters in Batman: Arkham Asylum. And ofc Brother Laz in the D2 mod Median XL as he's fucking insane

If there's one that has gotten "Holy Shit!" reaction out of me, it's KH2. The game had many faults, but the final bosses were insane. The fact that you throw fifteen storey buildings at him helps.

Whoa, another Median player! Yep, Brother Laz demands respect. Never beaten him, although I've done all the other ubers and heroics. Astrogha is pretty epic, too.

Oblivion!
Mehrunes Dagon wasn't so much a fight as an epic showdown with a motherfucking 4 armed God of destruction. I did enjoy fighting alongside Martin and several of the Empire's best. I just wish Baurus hadn't died at the great gate.

Colossus 13 from SotC. No, the 16th has nothing on the EPIC that this boss has.

It emerges from under the desert, then you chase it around on horseback while shooting arrows at it. When you get the wing to drop, you align yourself with it and jump to it from your moving horse. You then make your way up the wings, taking the battle to the skies. You stab its weakpoints and hold on for dear life as it does its best to shake you off. DAMN!

I really liked MGS4's final fight with Liquid, or whatever. I never played the others, and I really want to. But the story dosen't make much sense to me because of it. But back to the topic, I loved it. I felt like it was an epic ending to the game.

Also, why does everybody think that killing Lucian was the final boss fight in Fable 2? I thought it was that triangle thing that summons people that you fight when escaping the mansion.

Metal Gear Solid 3 and Devil May Cry 3. Damn, Just damn!
That's what I was going to say.
It's just awesome when the music begins to play during the last boss battle in MGS 3...and just as awesome are the other boss fights in that game.

And Devil May Cry 3...well, it feels good to be awesome enough to kick Vergil's ass. Especially if you beat him on the "Dante Must Die" difficulty setting...you feel like a god.
