Are there any games that began a cult in the same way that Star Wars did? A cult of fans that just drive you insane with thier utter worship of that series? Say a single thing out of line and expect to possibly find your house on fire when you return home.

For me:

JRPGs: FF7
MMORPGS: Wow (Of course)
Racing: GT vs Forza fans (Seriously, stfu!)
FPS: CoD and Halo
WRPGs: Fallout (Never used to be until the topics here came up and people said "it should NEVER leave its origination" *pompus attitude included*)
Platformers: Kingdom Hearts and Jak fans
3rdPS: Gears ¬_¬
Beat'em Ups: 2D originated fighters, such as Street Fighter, King of Fighters etc

EDIT: I'm specifically saying fanboys/girls and not fans in general because I'm a fan of quite a few things but not to the point I worship it, I am a fan of Tolkien lore, but if someone came along and bashed it I wouldn't give a monkies, obviously they don't like it but then I don't like everything they like either.

All of them. Seriously, if you look hard enough, you can find a cult for anything.

I think what annoys me most, though, is when I catch MYSELF being a fanboy. I've only ever really done it with the Fable series. I'm not really sure why I get so happy about it either. It just keeps finding new and worse ways to make me hate it.

World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy and Call of Duty all come to mind...

However, I've had my worst experiences with WoW Fans, it really scares me when some fans can recite the history of Azeroth, but have minimal knowledge of real history. I brought this up to a WoW playing friend and he defended himself by saying "WoW history is sooooooo much more interesting," I facepalmed and changed the subject.

I also worked at an electronics store during the midnight launch of Lich King, too many fans were borderline 'LARPers' and it made me uncomfortable.

Valve fanboys/girls.

They piss me off with all their "Portal is the greatest game ever made and the characters are the best ever"!

To this day no one has told me why they like Glados even though I've asked many times, they usually just say "cause she's funny and THE CAKE IS A LIE"."

On this site you'll find more Valve fanboys than anything but for the internet at large it's probably the CoD fanboys that get on my nerves the most. Although that is a bit of a case of me calling the kettle black since I'm a pretty big Bungie fanboy. Not a Halo fanboy, I'll admit its imperfections any day, but Bungie is one hell of a developer.

Halo fanboys were among the worst at one point but if you ask me its died down since Halo 3 and CoD became the big game to play online. Most of the Halo fanboy rage is at CoD anyway.

Kingdom Hearts.

If you listened to the fanbase, it's no longer about a nostalgic Disney romp with a spikey-haired kid and a key as a giant weapon...

...It's about a bunch of guys in black robes all making sweet, sweet love to each other.

Sometimes the spikey-haired kid joins in as well with his albino buddy.

Guitar Hero had some pretty stuck up fanboys/girls. I get the last laugh on that argument now.

Call of Duty fanboys/girls get on my nerves too.

Final Fantasy VII for sure. (Aaaaand I'm going to die in 3-2-1.)

But besides that, the Call of Duty ones too, I gotta agree. And I'm going to agree with the Kingdom Hearts one. I like KH, but if I was just now getting into it (versus when it had just started), I'd be running the other way. The fanbase can get so obnoxious when it comes to KH. -_- Drives me nuts and sometimes makes me a little ashamed to admit that I like it.

There's another one that came to mind, but I can't remember what it was. Darn.

Oh! RE4/RE5 and I'm talking only RE4/RE5. C'mon, RE fans, you can't tell me you don't remember the obnoxious kiddos that played only RE4 and claimed to love/know all there is to Resident Evil without ever touching the old ones.

Because shes an expansion on the unnatural fear of a mother figure being a threat to your survival?

Anyway, Final Fantasy and Fallout 3 fan people are pretty annoying.

Call of duty... why does everyone above me think that game has fanGIRLs?
I like kingdom hearts but the fans can get very annoying at times
and people who think that halo has an awesome story (the awesome books and anime do not count)

Basically anything that I don't like- would be the logical response.
Not necessarily. I'll admit that some Kingdom hearts fans are annoying, borderline scary. People who dare complain about KH and its random sequels are often attacked aggressively by these fanboys. They kinda make me look bad; I really like KH but I know my limits. Same with FF; I like the game(s) and that's it. I know better than to have a discussion with a hardcore FF fan. If that ever happens, I just nod and turn around.

To me, the most annoying fanboys/girls out there are usually people who play FPS, such as Halo, CoD, Gears of War and so on. I actually decided to give CoD a shot a couple of months ago (I'm not into FPS) and I'll admit it was fun...until I played online. I met all sorts of people: Trolls, people who were obsessed with the game, people who were angry at me for being a newbie, rude people who didn't want me on their team because I was learning, people who probably thought they were truly saving the world or something. I could go on but I think that's enough.

Most CoD fans take the game too seriously. I work at a video game store and the kind of customers that would specifically attend a midnight release just for that game are the most annoying, obnoxious and moronic ones. The few great people I've met while playing CoD are usually shadowed by these fanboys.

Something really ticks me off about JRPG and anime fans in general. I can't put my finger on it, and I know it's probably a stupid prejudice, but good Christ, do they annoy me. It's not even a dislike of the genres; I love Chrono Trigger and Cowboy Bebop, for example. There's just something creepy and obnoxious about otaku.

Oh, and Gears of War obsessives.

This.

Also the Minecraft fanboys/girls (or as I prefer to call them "Minecultists")
