Games with wasted potential?

Every game ever made? Depends on your idea of "potential".

Sonic Unleashed...

If not for the Wolfhog stages and the adventure map I would have loved that game!

Any Superman game.

Flying through the sky, shooting lazors at out your eyes, ripping cars in half, fighting Bizzaro, Doomsday, Darkseid!

How could this not be fun dammit!
Because the character has about as much depth as a cardboard cutout? No... that can't be it. How do they keep screwing this up?

And the usual accusation that the character is just too powerful... well... no, that's just a different kind of game.

No offense, Twad. But that's kinda a cheap answer.

"Games that had the potential to be among the best games, but somehow squandered it through bad game design or poor implementation" would probably be a better (and needlessly verbose) operationalization.

Just Cause 2. Considering it is fun as hell, not having any form of Co-op is a pretty missed opportunity.
Also not haveing it on xp lost it alot of sales.

I think that Two Worlds could have been the "Oblivion-Killer" people said that it might be.
The poor game-play, hilariously bad voice-actors and horrid animation killed it. If those were fixed then I'd still have the game and most likely still be playing it.
Also this, It was a great game bogged down by the horses and the problems you stated.

I think MAG could have been an amazing game if it was done better. The mechanics of a 256 player online network is brilliant. But I just don't think MAGs gameplay was up to scratch.
It would also be more accessible for new player, like me,if the low-vs-high level player balance was a bit better.I'm not saying that a low level dude should be able to kill a high level player with ease. But they shouldn't just die on the spot.

OT:Risen had great potentials. But failed with being overly difficult. Not challenging, just difficult. And by having broken gameplay.

Bayonetta.
say what?

I hated the game really I did for a J-Rpg it was a witch with guns big whoop.
And yes I do like JRPGS the old fasioned ones but today they are just a let down.
I wasn't going to say anything, but...I'm baffled...how does Bayonetta has anything to do with JPRGs?

Dragon Age - Remove all the damn padding. Make the DLC actually work. Don't make my irreplaceable crowd-control mage throw a tantrum and leave right before the climax.
What's padding?
DLC does work, there will always be problems in games but DLC not working for people is a minority. And finally...
It's part of the story for Morrigan to leave if you refuse her offer, what other reason is good enough for her to stay then?
a) "Padding" is when a game is artificially lengthened in a manner that is detrimental to the overall quality. In the case of Dragon Age it was the long featureless hallways dotted with minor skirmishes and the random encounters while travelling. They were tedious, devoid of challenge and all round pointless.

b) The DLC didn't work for me. Minority or otherwise, that's quite enough to piss me off. After all, I paid for that shit. And, judging by all the posts I found on the DA forums, a ton of other people were having the same problem.

c) Oh sure, the mage tantrum made perfect sense in the storyline. But having my party crippled right before the damn climax is not acceptable. A game should not screw gameplay for the sake of story (nor vice versa). It would have been easy for them to write it so the mage would stick around.

None taken. You make a good point, but "wasted potential" is something i feel is partly left to each person's perception of what is a "good" game.
But you summed my point i had in mind at the time pretty well, actually. Problems with design, poor implementation, or problems with the user interface can all be things that gets in the way of an otherwise fun experience..

For example, the Space Empire5 game if one of my favorite game of its kind.. but the user interface really grinds down the experience, making it slow and frustratingly innefective. THe game is basically micromanagement hell, but handled badly because otherwise its fun to design/customize your warships exactly like you want, it just takes FOREVER to get done when logical shortcuts should be made.

Or Oblivion, with the broken magic system that cheapens the gameplay experience if you dont play mage..mages being way too good at everything, the rogue/warrior are still functionnal and fun to play but are dependant on magic and external boosts to barely reach the power level the mages can.

Pokemon, IMHO, is one i would call "wasted potential". I can see and imagine a great many ways it would be awesome, more engaging, more realistic (while keeping the game's flavor).. and i could go on and on about it. But right now the games are pretty much bland, limited, slow and mechanical. Basically, its like the current games are a unfinished core of a much greater game, its skeletton. The guts, muscle and brain are still missing.

Sonic adventure 2... the first level, you jump from a helicopter a few hundred feet above the ground, stealing a propellor (or some other piece of metal from it), spinning quickly to the ground. you then land on a slope and grind your way down the road, sending cars flying as you go down... after about half a minute (if you bump into every car on the way down) sonic decides to get off... sure he's faster, but its nowhere near as cool or fun! oh, and the first boss is this quite fun too...
The knuckles parts are just frustrating... the game had an awesome sound track, an awesome opening, but that was all wasted with bad design... such as the camera angle suddenly changing, you panicking and moving the analog stick to a new direction and sonic flinging himself over the safety banisters...

urrm, can't think of anymore... sigh, or more can't be assed to think of any more

Far Cry 2 up the hizzouse!

Yeah, I know at least two others before me have already mentioned it but oh well.

Yet again I must state my disdain for FEAR 2: Project Origin. They could've at least upped the AI so that the battles would've been somewhat entertaining like in the original FEAR. But noooooooo. They had to dumb it down and make it a lesser game than its predecessor. A fair bit of wasted potential there.
100% hands down agree on fear, I played the old one more than the new one evan today.

This 'wasted potential' list could definitely co-inside with my 'worst games ever' list simply because the worst games I've ever played are games that I have been so let down by that I will never ever recover.

Star Fox Adventures had a lot going for it. Star Fox: Good. Adventure game: Nice idea. Fetch quests that take you from one side of the map to the other: uhhh... Okay? Gameplay that boiled down to a shitty 3D adventure game mixed with 5 short segments where you fly the arwing: Suck ass. Not only that but they somehow tied the entire story into: "By the way! Andross is using this planet and the krazoa to revive himself!" Which made it even worse.

SFA wasn't supposed to be a starfox game. And would be a LOT better if it hadn't. Potential wasted.

Half Life 2. What looked like a long action packed gripping story adventure turned into non stop filler where eventually the plot would come out to breath before it sufficated in filler.

Xenosaga; great interface ideas in the genre, interesting stories and ideas, murdered by frequent-abusive-obtusive-lengthy-wordy-without-telling-you-anything cutscenes... Though most Square Enix Namco games suffer the same problems.

It should not take half-an-hour between hitting 'start' and letting the player do anything. It really should not take an hour-and-a-half between hitting 'start' and letting the player actually play the game in any meaningful way. And between chapter cut-scenes should not be so long as to require an intermission (let alone two).
