Bioshock...I just couldn't do it.
What did it for you?
By the way, were you playing on PC or console?
I'm of the opinion that Bioshock - more than other FPS game - simply does not work on consoles, with the limited gamepad interface. Even the FOV is too limited on consoles, makes the game seem so claustrophobic and frustrating.
I have it on Steam. I think I have the second one too, which is odd considering the fact, heh.
I don't really think the game is bad. For me, I just didn't find it interesting. The combat kind of annoyed me. I know I should give it a second chance, but it's hard to go back to a game with a tarnished record when I have so many games on my backlog that I want to get to. One day though...one day!
Buddy, that's me!
I played Bioshock and I was like "eeeeuuh... well?" and left if for several months.
But it's a game that has depths not readily apparent nor easily exploited.
On PC I highly suggest exploiting the (default) Shift for plasmid/weapon/ammo selection menu to full extent as the weapons and plasmids only shine when used together and just when you need them. Key is how this selection menu pauses the game, giving you time to think about what you need so when you see a nitro-splicer toss a grenade:
-SHIFT!
-Select telekinesis
-grab that grenade right out the air and toss it back at them!
Where I went wrong was I was never using any of my plasmids in combat as I would try to scroll through them and it was just too slow. It became that I'd just keep using whatever weapon I happened to have drawn rather than the ideal or most fun tool for the job.
Other things like (shift select) releasing swarm when retreating round corner, (shift switch to incinerate) ignite a splicer, (shift machine gun) chase him down till he jumps into water then electro bolt the water!
I know it's sacrilege, but on first play-though you should check out guides and wikias on how to best use weapons.
Like for example did you know the wrench does FOUR TIMES damage on stunned enemies? Atlas said it was stronger, but didn't emphasise 4x stronger. Or that trap bolts deal 700hp damage, three alone could take down a big-daddy.
At times I wonder if Bioshock would have been a funner game if the stats had been more transparent, like some kind of marker indicating damage dealt. But I have no problem leaning on wikis. Just WATCH OUT FOR SPOILER TAGS! (there are some big ones).
For bioshock 2 (that completely lacks the pause weapon/plasmid select menu on PC) I remapped the weapons hotkeys from 1-8, to Q, E, X, C, F, V, G and T
With mouse4= interact and TAB=medkit I believe I had it as:
q= launcher
e= drill
x= rivet gun
c= chain gun
f= shotgun
t= harpoon
G= hacking dart
v= video camera
This allowed me to switch weapons even quicker on the fly.
For plasmids I focused on having a few VERY powerful plasmids that I could easily switch between.
