For me it was Infamous. I saw Prototype being made and thought Infamous just looked like a worse version of that, but my friend convinced me to get it. Really glad he did too the game is a lot of fun.

Dragon Age: Origins - Just saw an add for it and knew it was an RPG so I was like fuck it nothing else to do may as well. Lo and behold it is now my favourite game of all time. Funny how things turn out.

Tropico - Only played it to be able to give my mom a personalized tutorial, game is awesome.
Alpha Protocol - I bought into all the bullcrap when it was released.
Skyrim - Hated Oblivion severely, a leaked Let's Play caused me to pre-order it.

Same here. I don't have enough disposable income to waste on games I don't think I would like. I try to do research about a game before I decide to buy it. I watched the first 30 minutes of The Witcher 2 so I could see if the combat was better than the first, after hearing The Witcher 1 wasn't that great. It looked like fun so I went out and bought it. If it hadn't look like fun, I wouldn't have bothered.

Halo. When I started playing it, I was mostly into JRPGs and action platformer games. Then my friend made me play Halo and lent me the books. It was instant love. I'm still not really into FPSs but Halo is my exception.

Castlevania (as a franchise)

The first one I played was Order of Occlasia on my buddies DS and I just couldn't get into it. But just last week after listening to hours of OST's from Castlevania titles, I decided to start from the beginning... My god, how blind I have been..

So today finding that I have some money to toss around, I bought the following:

Castlevania 1, 2, 3, 4 (Wii Virtual Console)
Castlevania Lords of Shadows (PS3)
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles (PSP/Vita)
Castlevania Harmony of Despair (PS3)

I already owned Symphony of The Night out of recommendation from my buddy, never got around to playing it.

The Assassin's Creed series. I knew I would enjoy it for a bit, but I didn't think it would make any top fives.

Number 1 was great, but I found it did get repetitive after a while. Then I tried number 2. That game is the best thing ever. It's so beautiful...I can't describe how much fun I was having. The rest of the games might not ever capture that spirit of FUCK YES! ever again, but here's to hope and to more parkour with killing.

VITTORIA AGLI ASSASSINI!

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade

"You mean to tell me all you do is click on units and then click on other units? Where's the fun in that?"

*hours later*

Bulletstorm. I was one of those guys who initially wrote it off as a "dudebro" games. I didn't even like the demo all that much.

But a few months after release I was going through a gaming drought and happened upon some gameplay footage online and saw all the crazy levels and bright eye-popping colors and thought, "Well I guess that looks fun."

Found a cheap copy online and now it's one of my favorite FPS's.

Bioshock... I don't know why, the box art style just rubbed me the wrong way. Randomly bored one afternoon and couln't bear to play fallout Vegas anymore so I stuck it in and didn't relinquish the controller until I beat it.

Fallout: New Vegas is mine, mainly because I started out with Fallout 3. The gameplay is still pretty crappy to me, but I had a blast with just about everything else.

I also really like Planescape: Torment, but I don't even know why. It's tiring to have to read everything, the adventuring isn't that great, and the combat is just as horrid as New Vegas's.

Zone of the Enders The 2nd Runner. I was a bit leary of the Japanese mech styling, having been burned by other mech games of last gen but this one had Hideo's name attached to it so I gave it a try. I simply could not put this game down! After I beat it once, I beat it in Game Plus, then a few more times to find the hidden characters for the versus mode. Then again after that just for good measure!

Splinter Cell:Conviction - I was never a fan of the SC series or of stealth games in general but I saw this new for ?10 and decided to give it a bash.Thoroughly enjoyed it probably due to the fact that it's more action oriented than the previous games, something I understand disappointed a lot of SC fans
I think it was hated more along the lines of "Mark and Execute to win", but if you ignore that, it's a pretty solid game.

Also, one of the few games where I'd say that the Co-Op is probably more entertaining than the single player. Pick it up with a friend or brother, and you're in for hours of entertainment.

OT: I picked up Call of Duty 4 as an afterthought when we went to rent Bioshock because of a 2 game special deal that was going on at Blockbuster. Once we took a break with Bioshock, we decided "what the hell, it was free, might as well play it".

Didn't touch Bioshock for the entire week we rented the games. And I didn't even have online for the multiplayer.

For me Im in agreement with the OP, didn't think I'd like Red Dead Redemption, or Arkham City. I generally don't like westerns, only ones I ever liked were the ones my grandfather watched, but RDR was amazing, and I didn't really like arkham asylum, so I didnt think Id like arlham city but I liked it a lot

Mass Effect 2 (didn't know much about it at the time). Was in game searching for Dragon Age collectors edition for the pc I think. And one of the guys at the store recommended it to me. Was shocked how good it was when I played it.
