A couple of years ago, I was looking for a bit of fun, and I saw Yakuza 3 for 10 Euro on Play.com.
It had pretty decent reviews, and for 10 Euro, what the hell, right?
What I expected was a bit of mindless fun, with a cliched story I won't care about.
What I got was a game with astoundingly fun combat, likeable characters and a pretty good story.
From that moment on, I was a Yakuza fan, and proud.
All for 10 Euro.
One of my best purchase decisions, period.

The game I'm currently playing, Sacrifice.

I picked it up a while ago because it's cheap on GOG.com and because I'd heard it was quite unique. I put off playing it for a while because I had a weird feeling I'd be absolutely terrible at it and be completely confused the entire time (for those who don't know, it's basically an RTS where you control everything as a Wizard from ground level in third person view, and you can join in the fight).

Five or so missions in now, and I'm absolutely loving it. It's unlike anything I've ever played before, in all the right ways. Most importantly, it's just so much fun to play. I suppose I should've guessed though... almost everything Interplay published back in the day was pure gold.

Mine would be mass effect 1, played it, didn't like it. played it agian 6months later and loved it, it is now one of my favourite games and franchises (note I have not finnished me3 yet). And halo (or halo 2, but I played the 1st one first), I disliked halo at first but it is now also one of my favourite games, since those 2 instances I have always tried to keep an open mind and not judge a game unless I have played it, even then, given it a fair chance (as in a few hours, unless I really hate it).

I guess maybe Hotel Dust: Room 215 may count. I saw it on sales and I read it had a average review so I bought it since I needed a new game to play so my overall expectation was low. In the end however I end up falling in love the game due to the great narration and characters.

Again maybe Xenoblade Chronicle count aswell since I don't like mosty JRPG in general due to their complicated gaming system, limited save spot and etc however that game is the oppersite.

Easy, Minecraft and Rockband. Both games I looked at and went "Wow that seems dumb" but, in the case of Rockband, I got drunk at a friend's house and loved it. Minecraft it was a case of playing on a friend's account and going "Alright, I kind of enjoy this," and then it escalated out of control to the point I now spend some of my free time helping to recreate Middle Earth.

Also Mirror's Edge was another unexpected surprise, I would never have picked it up if it hadn't been recommended to me.

Batman Arkham Assylum.

I thought I'd hate the stealth aspect. I ended up loving this game. Except for how they repeated the 'Bane' fight like 5 times and I despised the Croc's Lair stage.

Half life 2 I heard about it was this awesome FPS, I randomly saw "The Orange Box" in a store and I only got it because of Portal. I ended up loving it.

Mass Effect 1 I heard about it from a friend and he didn't exactly have the same tastes in games as me and the cover of the box didn't help. Needless to say I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Crusader Kings 2...I disliked Hearts of Iron 3 (despite being a WW2 history nerd), but somehow Paradox's RTS gamplay hit the right balance for me in CK2.

I'm surprised so many people didn't think they'd like Mass Effect before trying it. Maybe it's just because I'm such an RPG and Sci-fi nerd, but I was sure it'd be epic from the beginning.

To actually answer though, Skyrim is definitely one. Never got into Morrowind and just couldn't stand Oblivion, and believe me, I tried. But while I honestly don't put all that many hours into it, I think Skyrim's great.

Saints Row. "A GTA clone from a decent RPG maker that's been failing with third person shooters the last few years? Gonna be shit!" I fuckin LOVE Saints Row.

State of Emergency. It looked cool, but I didn't think it could pull off half of what it promised, at least not while still being fun, totally wrong there.

Dynamite Cop. It's an interactive cheese action movie. Doesn't sound like a recipe for success, but I loved it.

Portal. Never been that big a Valve fan and the concept seemed cool, but I didn't know how they'd make it engaging. Now I'm a Portal Worshiper.

There are probably more, but idgaf... oh! Jersey Devil. Badass PS1 platformer.

League of legends. My friends told me about this fun new game they were playing on PC so I decided to give it a go since it's free. Now I am playing it daily and have already spent plenty of money on it, I love this game so much!

Jak and Daxter. At the time, I never really got in to the first game. I thought it was going to be a glorified kids game. But, then I got to play it. My mother bought it for me, you see, in waiting for Jak II. And I loved it :D
