What are the games out there that you just couldn't get into, but you genuinely respect? It could be for introducing mechanics or maybe for trying to bring something new to it's genre, breaking the mold. For me personally, it's the Half-Life series. Just for some odd reason, I couldn't get into the game. I really can't explain it. I've tried over and over, but to no avail. I do, however, highly respect HL for changing up the way they told the story. As opposed to, "oooh, hey, look at that pretty cutscene telling me everything". I got to look around, I wasn't constrained to watching a video. And any time you were constrained, it was because something important was happening to you, and that makes it feel personal. I also applaud it for bringing puzzles to the shooter, it was a nice touch.

Yeah, HL2 for me too. I hated that game but I admit it must have been innovate when it came out.

Angry Birds. The game is pretty dumb to me but I respect it from bringing attention to gaming in iDevices and the sort. And for managing to make it to the consoles. and for making a movie.
Dumb ass game.

Battlefield and Medal of Honor. I prefer CoD (though its not my favorite) because its easier to play for a FPS noob like me, but I respect those two for trying to do something slightly different than CoD.

Neverdead. Great idea, horrible execution. But it gets an A for effort!

God of War.

I prefer the timing-based multi-weapon button mashing combos of Devil May Cry to the Light-Heavy combo system, the system God of War uses always gets bland and repetitive to me. And while the second and third ones went off the narrative deep end, the first and the PSP ones had a very interesting and compelling story, where Kratos was actually half of a real character.

MMORPGs like WoW I guess. I don't have the time, money, effort or interest (or computer specs) to put into something like Guild Wars or WoW but they are good games.

I liked HL2, I REALLY liked the driving sections actually. Then I get onto the forums and shit those were the worst part across the board apparently...

The higher tier of fighting games is like this for me as well. I can see the buttons the guys are pressing for the swag combos but I am never gonna be able to do anything like that myself. Plus really pro players can hitconfirm anything into a combo from anywhere on the screen. Most people like me would be like "I hit him with Jumping S then go into a combo" then can't do much else.

Bioshock. I just really disliked the gameplay. I don't know exactly why. But I can definitely see the appeal of the game.

Far Cry 3. The world is beautiful and the gameplay is solid, but I have totally no interest whatsoever in it. The story and setting almost 100% contrasts what I'd want in a game I guess.

Assassin's Creed. Great games, but it's just not for me. I played the first for 2 hours or so and just completely lost interest. I guess a free roam assassin/stealth game just isn't for me.

Gonna have to say Spec Ops.

I respect what it does (not tries to do, does), but...eh, just doesn't do it for me; depends on the way you approach all games I guess.

I hate the Halo games.... every single one of them, for me is boring and repetetive. But i do respect the effort, the music and the incredible story the later games had (Reach and Halo 4). Overall i like the universe of it, but not the way has the game is executed.

Never played the RTS one so i haven't got an opinion formed.

I also hate the Call of Duty games. Loved CoD 2 to the point of repetition, but every single CoD game for me is play the campaign once and nevermore and try to have a little of fun in the multiplayer, while you're getting screamed at by kids. These ones i purely hate.

Darksider. Interesting story and awesome design, but the gameplay is repetitive and boring. Kudos for the setting tough.

World of Warcraft. It was... kinda good at the beggining (even behind all the grinding), but to be honest, i think it lost it's charm with all the nerfings and ridiculous updates that made a incredible world i loved (from Warcraft3), into this wacky retard universe. Still respect it for lasting for so long...

Diablo 3.... it's... a nice game... but it's just that. A nice game. The story is boring, and it's predecessor Diablo 2 is 100 times way cooler... I guess i liked the characters...

All the latest mario games. The Universe and the handheld ones and the new super marios.... they're all... the same thing. No taste. Funny stuff in it but overall it's weak...

These are all the ones i can remember... for now..

EVE Online.

I respect the game immensily for it's goal, and it's philosophy. It's one of the few games to even come close to creating a completely player driven universe and setting. Not to mention it earns a ton of bonus points for going with a fairly untapped setting; starship driven combat and commerce over the usual sword and sorcery that MMORPG's tend to go for.

But despite that, you couldn't pay me enough money to spend another minute in that hellhole.

See, the greatest lauding I can give to EVE is also the thing that makes me stay right the fuck away from it; it's player driven. Give players that much power, and they turn into monsters with morals that would make a mongol raider puke and the most hardbitten gang banger grimace. Playing this game as a new player is like walking into a general pop prison yard wearing a sign that says "Hey! I rape children and snitch to cops!" Unless you're already set with the more powerful corporations and have contacts to make sure you're not among their cannon fodder from the get go, you are not a player in EVEonline, you are a VICTIM, you are meat to be fed to the established powers. No thanks.

If you want the experience of playing EVE online, go wear a Klan outfit in the middle of Watts. It'll be cheaper anyway.
I agree, absolutely 100% What EVE online does is an absolute accomplishment, and not a small one either. But Christ if that isn't one of the hardest MMO's to start playing. EVE online: Fun to hear about, boring/hard as hell to play.

I agree 100% on EVE. I respect the hell out of it, but you couldn't pay me to actually play the bloody thing again.

Mass Effect (only played the 1st, mind you). Not a fan of the first game's clunky cover-based shooting system (although I'm sure it improved in later entries), repetitious vehicle "exploration" of planets (which I also heard was removed), and overall narrative - not too intriguing in my eyes.

However I definitely respect how well Bioware was able to draw in almost every other person who played ME and getting them so ridiculously invested in the story. If the ME3 outcry was indication enough, they sure know how to rope people in to their creations.

I actually wish I could join in on what everyone else seems to see in the series.

For the moment I'm going to have to go with Half Life 2 as I've been playeing that game for what seems like years and still haven't become engrossed.

Then again I certainly haven't finished it so theres always the possibility it could turn around... It's happened before afterall.

I hate to say it but...Grand Theft Auto.

Yeah, I said it. I was a teenager when the whole "Hot Coffee" mod was discovered, which created controversy and a bad taste in my mouth, but I never could understand the appeal of the general premise behind it. It just never appealed to me to be a criminal, even if it is a game with huge acclaim. I own GTA IV but never started it up. Wish I could like them too.

Another vote for EVE. I actually follow EVE news and EVE bloggers, there isn't another experience like it, but I don't think I could play it, I'm bad at forming the sort of social connection you need (I don't have a decent mike for one)

Torchlight/Diablo/Any of that sort of game. I just hate the way loot works and the way there's so much content that you can't visit every dungeon map you find etc. I tend to be clingy in games and the idea that you're always changing armour, always grinding... I can't take it. It's pure addiction mechanics. But lots of people love the games and they obviously do a high quality job.

Realistic driving games. I can't drive for anything on them and so its no fun, but Gran Turismo does a good job at what it does

Any game with good story/characters and bad gameplay. Like these:

I hate GTA games, they're so boring. I respect how well made the games are and how each installment helps further gaming. However, it just isn't thrilling for me. Oddly, without GTA, there would be no Red Dead Redemption, which is my favorite game.

Also, Escape from Monkey Island. I love Tim Schafer and most point and click adventure games (at least used to), but this game just didn't do it for me and bored me to tears.

Well, I don't believe Tim Schafer worked on any of the MI games after the first two! So, respect for TS restored? haha

OT: I think the Sims might fit here. I respect it a lot, and I love Will Wright, but geez I lost interest fast. Oh well, it did some cool things for gaming, so I respect it.

Halo; In general I hate fps', but Halo was more than a crap game, it was a change in the way we game and lead to many of the ways we play online today. So much respect.

Resident Evil series; I never got into playin the series however, I like the characters and most of the story.

GTA; I would never spend money on this game, however the impact sandbox games have had on the industries is huge and we have GTA to thank for putting it into mainstream gaming.
