Bioshock Series: only played the second, I just though the combat was a bit clunky.
Also the modern Fallout series, I was brought up on Morrowind, which was a bastard of a game but brilliant and Oblivion. But somehow for me fallout wasn't as special and I thought the out of VATS shooting was made irrelevant by VATS.

Also, Dragon Age II. I didn't actually dislike this game very much, and I know people give it a lot of flak, but I respect Bioware for the experiment that was this game. I don't think it was a rushed cash-in to ride the bandwagon of popularity the first game had, I think they were legitimately trying to experiment with the core mechanics of the experience. It's a shame that they didn't just make this some kind of expansion pack, but, still, I give it props. I hope that the third game proves to be a more widely enjoyable experience, though.
Man, I was hooked on Dragon Age 2 until I saw that you can look at it on YouTube. Serious buzz kill for me. Same with Mass Effect 2.

Your disdain for fighters is mirrored by my frustration with FPS. Time Splitters 2, Just Cause 2, and Zeno Clash Ultimate are my favs in that genre. No Halo, Gears, Borderlands or Killzone. I respect those games, but I'm not into them.

I was a heavy arcade gamer in the 80's up to 95. Brawlers and Fighters are my favorite type of game because they usually give me arcade nostalgia. I'm not into the online thing, but I've done a tiny bit of Virtua Fighter 5 verses some online folks and it was ok. Nothing replaces standing next to someone, making their aquaintance, and playing against them.

I'm not into turn based RPGs unless there's some kind of spin on that traditional formula - Vagrant Story for example was a favorite of mine. I haven't beat it yet because I got stuck, but it's a great game. I think the appeal for turn based RPGs is the strategy, which would make it like digital chess. I'd much rather analogue chess lol.

In general, I respect PC gaming, but I'm not a fan of "tank" like controls. I like the old school arcade style where it feels like your character isn't stuck to the middle of the screen. Unfortunately, most FPS suffer from this, as do games like Two Worlds 2, which is a decent game, but gets tired after a few weeks. If you're going to have combat, I need Ninja Gaiden, or Bayonetta, or Urban Reign. I like feeling nimble. Batman Arkham games were also more my speed. Many PC games or PC games ported to consoles have that tank thing that becomes boring to me after a while.

So a more complete list of games that I respect but can't get into:

Final Fantasy
Halo, Gears, Killzone, Farcry, etc
Dark Souls/Demon Souls
Resident Evil - I'm not a horror fan but those are def good games.
Bioshock - again, great game, but I'm not a horror fan

I'm way old school. I see the value in FPS, but I have strange taste. Local multiplayer significantly changes my opinion of FPS. It's the single player campaigns that have to offer something different enough in order for me to play. So Just Cause 2 and Zeno Clash Ultimate.

Oh and the game that I absolutely can't stand, and don't respect would be Skyrim. I see the open world gameplay, and the modifications that you can make, but it's so frustrating. I rented it, and hated it. Skyrim is the only game that frustates me to the point that I don't respect it. There you go OP, new thread.

Fifa, or probably Madden if I were an American.

I Hate to play these games, because they are so Boring, mainly because I don't the sport itself. I have to respect it though, for the incredible way of recreating the feel of soccer to pretty complex levels.

Mark of the Ninja.

It is a great stealth game. It does everything right and knows what it wants. Still it felt really repetitive and because I knew what to 'big' plot twist would be after the first mission, the game was killed for me. The ending didn't help either. Didn't like the art style either.

Seeing a lot of the same games crop up. Wonder if it's the kind of players the Escapist attracts or just coincidence.
I think most of it is the fact that the game has to have done something for gaming in the long run.

World of Warcraft is the classic "Elephant in the Room" on my list . I don't like the way it plays, and I definitely don't like the way its been the mold for every cookie cutter MMO developer looking to turn a fast buck in the last ten years, but the game itself is polished to a mirror shine and admittedly Blizzard is not afraid to (for better or worse) jack ideas from other games that work and retool their game. I just wish Blizzard would announce that Project Titan (ideally an MMO FPS or something) so we can all collectively move on from and play something new.

Super Meat Boy. I really respect the game, the effort that went into making it (especially after seeing Indie Game: The Movie), and the game developers who made it. I just really dislike the game and gameplay itself.

Halo, I just am not a fan of the story or lore of the games.

Half-Life, I never even know what this was until the orange box so I was too late to the game to care, plus I
dont like Valve nor Gordon Freeman.

Bioshock, couldnt see what the big deal was from the time I spent playing it, I was comparing to
Fallout 3 at the time so didnt stand much chance. Honorable mention to Dishonored because it looks
like a mix of Fable and this game.

League of Legends, I like the design of the heroes and can see how it would be fun, but theres not enough variation for
me and the community is horrible.

All Blizzard games
