Well I am a huge FAN of turn based games. I especially like the older ones where you can create your own party of characters from scratch. To me I think too much obsession with "Real time" has been hurting gaming. I could say more about it, but I don't want to really start a flame war or anything.
If I had to pick some of my most hated games, I'd probably go back to games like "Disciples Of Steel" or "Spirit Of Adventure" that had a lot of potential for their genere but were otherwise just garbage.
There were also some god awful games I played just because they were games for the C-64 back in the day. There was this one space-fighter game where it took an act of god for me to even get a ship out of the hangar at the beginning (which was a ridiculous thing).
At any rate I think the dislike for turn based games largely stems from the mainstreaming of gaming. Most of the truely great turn based games were more or less designed for players of paper and pencil RPGs who at that time were fairly intellectual (as WoTC hadn't gotten the liscence, dumbed down, and mainstreamed that either). I guess you really have to be something of a nerd to enjoy building your own characters, naming them all, and then developing your own tactics around them. There are things you just can't do in real time.
For example when I do real time "RPGS" where I have companions (not created by me I might add, and my hero is usually created from very limited options), I get extremely frustrated with the AI that real time mandates be used since it has my "buddies" constantly doing the most mind numbingly stupid things imagiable. I mean in Fallout 3 when having companions can be more of an annoyance than a benefit I feel it says something.
Wizardry, Might and Magic, Wasteland, Realms Of Arkania, Ultima. Those are the CRPGs that got me obssesed with gaming.
Please not I'm not knocking real time gaming, obviously I enjoy it or else I wouldn't still be gaming. I just feel it doesn't work for all generes, and I would like to see more turn based RPGs and Strategy games.
In the future I figure when a lot of you whipper snappers have your fingers slow down, you'll want quality turn based games as well.
Heh, I said Whipper Snapper and I'm 34.
