I honestly can't think of many. I guess Halo, as I like that series, but am not a big fan of FPS games(when they are purely FPS, not something like the new Fallouts which are heavily RPG based with the simple mechanic of FPSing). I suppose some of the older ones were good, but the stems of the FPS genre after Halo all just turned to shit in my opinion(not saying that Halo was the last good one, I'm saying Halo started what lead to the genre turning to shit). The whole, two guns, regenerating health, powerhouse thing just doesn't appeal to me, but Halo does for some reason.

I'm pretty wide with my tastes. I'm not into FPS or turn based anything, but I like Just Cause 2.

Sport Games (if skateboarding counts as a sport) - Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 + 3

JRPGs - Generally I hate most (at least modern) JRPGs, but I am very fond of Persona 3 + 4 and Pokemon

The only genres of games I normally don't like (not counting subgenres) are strategy and sports. The former because I'm bad, the latter because I am indifferent to sports.

But recently I picked up Civilization V, and holy jeez I love it. Haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but the fact that I'm considering it is a testament to how much I like it.

In the sports-games genre, I remember being infatuated with Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup on the PS2 back in the day. Even though I don't consider myself a Harry Potter fan (not anymore at least), I'd love to see that game get an updated version.
(Oh, also, Super Dodgeball on the NES.)

Wow. I knew racing games weren't really The Escapist's thing, but I can't believe how many people seem down on them in this thread.

I feel you. It's kind of weird.

For me, though, a racing game has to be... er, different? to catch my interest. Like Burnout's affinity and allowance for complete destruction, or WipEout's slick aesthetic and combat-racing style of play. Things like Gran Turismo, for instance, just seem kind of lame.

Thanks to Driver: San Francisco, which I absolutely love, I will now give certain driving/racing games the time of day.

I'm pretty terrible at FPSes yet I love TF2, and I'm not too shabby in it either. :)

Damn- I was all gearing up to post a thread just like this one :p

The big examples I have are Company of Heroes, as the only RTS I have ever enjoyed, Mount and Blade Warband as the only RPG I've ever enjoyed, and Mercenaries as the only modern day shooter I've ever enjoyed.

I'm not a fan of stealth games but I love Dishonored and the Deus Ex franchise (Yes, even Invisible War. Come get me.)
Also, I usually don't like strategy games, but I have over twelve hours playtime on Civilization V and I liked X-Com: Enemy Unknown.

So anyone else had any experiences in games that have subverted their expectations and ended up being fun despite being from genres you generally dont care for?
I always hated FPS games. I avoided them like the plague for years.

Then one of my friends whined at me to try Borderlands. I put him off for months, then gave it a go just to shut him up.

I loved it.

Now I don't just flick past the FPS genre in favour of something else - I'll actually have a look at the game to see if it's something I'd like.

I've ended up buying a few of them now - Borderlands 2 (of course), the Mass Effect series (though they're mostly RPGs), Spec Ops: The Line etc

Go figure.

Super Smash Bros series. As a whole, I tend to loathe fighting games. There's only two kinds of people: the kind that kick your ass every time by mashing random buttons, and the kind that kick your ass every time because they bothered to learn all the chains and combos and whatnot. SSB is equal parts fanservice and kickass gameplay that has a more "/" shaped difficulty curve, rather than a "U" shaped one.

I don't really enjoy racing games however Lego racers is literally one of the best games ever. Also whilst its not a genre i generally play games for the story and therefore find it strange that i enjoy the mount and blade games so much given that there is no story at all.
