Lords of Magic. PC game from my childhood. Like the Heroes of Might and Magic turn-based strategy in a medieval fantasy world, but with real-time combat instead. The game manual was hugely dense and it was all very complicated, but I loved it all the same.

Most people I know don't know the Thunderforce series (esp 4 on MegaDrive). Might be because of age rather than obscurity.
They were fantastic

My Girlfriend is the President. It is a VN that takes place in the "fictional" country of Nippon. An alien crash lands and kills the prime minister of Nippon. In an attempt to make things right she makes Nippon's government that of America and makes your childhood friend the president. Throughout the story you meet three other girls: The president of Rusia, another childhood friend, and a spaceship (you read that right).

The game is really goofy and rarely takes itself seriously, but it does have some deep moments hidden some routes.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. Came out when I was two years old (1998), entertained the immature kid that was me for at least four years. (Stepping on little people felt never better)

I absolutely loved Little Big Adventure 2 on the PC when I was young, and still do! (Thanks GOG). However, I have never met anyone else in my life who has even heard of it! (It was a pretty big game! Hopefully someone slightly older than me, or the same age as me will have played it too!

I also loved the game Unholy War for the PS1. It was an early arena fighter at a time when a few different arena fighters were around (I can think of another 3 on the PS1 from this time, but not the names of them. :/ All from demo disks!)

I have a game on my DS that I surprisingly liked called Nostalgia. It's a turn based JRPG which is unfortunately too easy, and has a simple story, but I just loved the settings and characters. It was set in a steam-punk esque alternative real world and you had to visit monuments and wonders on an airship. The airship aspect was pretty cool too!

I'll always look back fondly on Baten Kaitos on Gamecube. Yahtzee posted an image of it's sequel in the middle of one of his last reviews while commenting on the fact that games don't need cards to function anymore. On the contrary, I'd say that the series, particularly the first game, had one of the best RPG battle systems I've ever seen.

On additional note I'd make note of Target Earth (or Assault Suits Leyenos, depending on the region) on the Sega Genesis. It was the first time as a kid that I saw power armor. I recently emulated and save stated my way though that intensely difficult game only to realize how much it had influenced me as I grew up.

Me and my best friend played it a lot when we were kids, it was awesome! It was also the first game i played when i finally got my first computer in my own room. I sat on the floor and played it for hours.

I´m a huge fan of Azure Dreams for the Ps1 but aside from my brother, i don´t know anyone who has ever heard of this game. Unfortunately it´s one of those games where it´s impossible to explain why it´s so great, the music is weird, the graphics are kinda awful and it doesn´t look spectacular at first sight. It´s just so weirdly atmospheric and the odd mix of monster farming, risk/reward dungeon looting and city building is really cool. The closest you get to a game like this is Dark Chronicle or Dark Cloud, but it´s not quite the same and not nearly as rewarding in their game design.

Just looked that up... (because I loved Dark Cloud) It visually reminds me of the Adventures of Alundra, one of my favourite games of all time! I may have to get it and give it a go! :p (Although I can't find it under £12 at the moment, so I may keep an eye on it for later!)

It's worth it though if the price drops at some point. The game is built around a random generated tower that you have to explore to find money and monster eggs. If you die in the tower you loose everything except for your monsters level, so it gets very exciting to explore. It's one of those games where you get very excited whenever you find something very rare like an oddly colored monster egg or a powerful magic ball and you get equally dissapointed whenever you mess up and die a horrible death. The nice thing is that it's turnbased, so you always end up thinking long and hard whenever you are about to do something stupid.

Valkyria Chronicles, for it's mix of XCOM style tactics with military strategy along with anime-esque style.
I loved Valkyria Chronicles! one of my best experiences I had before I sold my PS3. Thinking back, I think I found Valkyria Chronicle's game mechanics to be somewhat better than XCOM's although that's probably I found it more to my liking than most Turn Based Strategy games I've played over the years.

Awesome! That sounds right up my street! I imagine Dark Cloud borrowed a lot of influence from this!

Did you also play Jade Caccoon too? When you mentioned monsters it reminded me of that! With it's great monster evolution mechanic where you could make thousands of slightly different looking monsters!

Damn... How did I miss the fact it had a sequel!? Looks like another one to add to the Bucket List! :S

All my free time looks like it is now being sucked into a hole lined with 5-15 year old games! :S

It seems to be getting a little more recognition now (or maybe I've just gotten more aware of the fanbase in recent years) but,
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is one of the best and most immersive games I've ever played. And almost no one I know seems to have heard of it prior to me telling them. Also no one else wants to play it since you have to use mods to get it to work.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. LOVE this game and its criminally underrated. If anyone here is reading this then please play it. If you like Zelda with an Egyptian style coating then get this. It is NOT a rip off though and feels like its own thing. Its just inspired by Zelda. Highly Highly recommended. I seriously don't understand why this game didn't get more traction. Its very well made, controls are great, puzzles are cool and the anicent egyptian setting is amazing.

Its for the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox.
I've had this for PS2 for a long time but never played it. I'll move it up higher on my to play list :)

Let me push the goal posts a little bit further back for you then. You said Alundra was one of your favorite games of all time. Did you know it was a spiritual sequel to the Sega Genesis game "Landstalker"? If for some crazy reason you don't have a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive handy though never fear. You can get it on Steam. Though I haven't tried that since I have the physical cartridge. You might want to use Xpadder (the paid version or the old freeware version) on it since it says it has only partial controller support.

For me that would be the Legacy of Kain games. I know a few people online who like them, but no one I know personally has ever heard of them.

I played the hell out of Little Big Adventure 2. For the longest time I didn't even know it was a sequel to anything because I just knew it as 'Twinsen's Odyssey'. I don't know how old you are but I'm 26. I also had Unholy War on a demo disc (I'm guessing you read Official US Playstation Magazine back in the day?) I played it a bunch but I never actually played the full game.

As for my unknown game that I liked I'd have to say Silent Bomber. It was another game I played on a demo disc. I thought it was never actually released in America, but now that I'm looking it up it looks like I was wrong...so I'm going to have to try and track that down.

Anyway, the gameplay was really fun because the only form of attack you have is setting down bombs. You can drop them behind you or shoot them out. They had a delay of about half a second which was short enough so it stayed fast paced but just long enough that you had to think about what you were doing. Fun demo but I don't know about the whole game.
