Have you ever loved a game then learned to hate it? Loved everything about it, the world, the story, the gameplay; and then after you play it a little more something starts to bother you about it. It keeps nagging at you, and you start to notice other little things (or big things) about the game and suddenly the game starts to lose its wonder and awe. The once awe inspiring game becomes something disgusting and repulsive. Maybe it's due to the fact that it's so close to perfection but falls short in so many ways that you just can't stand it, or you just come to realize that the game has no real value to you. Maybe something in the story line disgusts you to the point where you can't play it anymore. Whatever it is I want to hear about it, those games that come so close to becoming your favorites then something about them sets you on edge and you learn to loathe it.
A few examples from me:
Demon's Souls - I first heard about the game from Zero Punctuation, and despite Yahtzee's bad-mouthing of it the idea of the game stuck with me and I wanted to play it badly. My brother sold his 360 and eventually got a PS3 and moved back into our house for awhile so I decided it was now or never. I bought the game, started it up, and became entranced with it. I love it when a game is hard and you have to earn your levels and think your way through the game. But there were some things that just annoyed me to death about the game. For starters the Magic, in particular Fireball, Fire Spray, Flame Toss, Soul Arrow, and Soul Ray. In essence these are all basically the same spell, just presented in an ever so slightly different way... and even then there are other spells that are basically just complete copies/upgraded versions of other spells. The most original and interesting spell in the game was Demon Prank and it's uses were quite limited. And then there was the World Tendency, a very important game mechanic that never gets explained fully to you in the game, same with Weapon Forging. And then there is that thing were some of the coolest clothing is GENDER SPECIFIC! What the frack is up with that? You have Gender versions of other clothing in the game, so why not make the coolest clothing in the game have different Gender Versions as well? And then for a game that is supposed to be hard some of the biggest boss battles are easy as pie. Heck I didn't even know you could use a giant sky shattering sword on the Sky King, I just killed the stupid thing with Soul Arrow and then found a useless sword after the battle. To me this game had so much potential and was so interesting, but so many little things about it were done oh so very wrong, and it just got to me to the point where I now hate the game.
World of Warcraft- I was a Vanilla WoW player, I got to level 60 with my Undead Warlock and then realized it was all pointless. Strung along by silly little levels that really didn't mean much and I eventually realized that while the world in the game was amazing, the combat was actually fairly shallow, the item system was hilariously stupid and the only fun thing about the game was the Arena and even that had it's problems. While I'm tempted to go back to the game every once in awhile (for basically the same reasons as Tycho http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/12/10/ ) I just have to think about it for awhile and then remember that the game is crap.
So come on now, I shared mine, you share yours.
