Games you Loved, then learned to Hate

Have you ever loved a game then learned to hate it? Loved everything about it, the world, the story, the gameplay; and then after you play it a little more something starts to bother you about it. It keeps nagging at you, and you start to notice other little things (or big things) about the game and suddenly the game starts to lose its wonder and awe. The once awe inspiring game becomes something disgusting and repulsive. Maybe it's due to the fact that it's so close to perfection but falls short in so many ways that you just can't stand it, or you just come to realize that the game has no real value to you. Maybe something in the story line disgusts you to the point where you can't play it anymore. Whatever it is I want to hear about it, those games that come so close to becoming your favorites then something about them sets you on edge and you learn to loathe it.

A few examples from me:

Demon's Souls - I first heard about the game from Zero Punctuation, and despite Yahtzee's bad-mouthing of it the idea of the game stuck with me and I wanted to play it badly. My brother sold his 360 and eventually got a PS3 and moved back into our house for awhile so I decided it was now or never. I bought the game, started it up, and became entranced with it. I love it when a game is hard and you have to earn your levels and think your way through the game. But there were some things that just annoyed me to death about the game. For starters the Magic, in particular Fireball, Fire Spray, Flame Toss, Soul Arrow, and Soul Ray. In essence these are all basically the same spell, just presented in an ever so slightly different way... and even then there are other spells that are basically just complete copies/upgraded versions of other spells. The most original and interesting spell in the game was Demon Prank and it's uses were quite limited. And then there was the World Tendency, a very important game mechanic that never gets explained fully to you in the game, same with Weapon Forging. And then there is that thing were some of the coolest clothing is GENDER SPECIFIC! What the frack is up with that? You have Gender versions of other clothing in the game, so why not make the coolest clothing in the game have different Gender Versions as well? And then for a game that is supposed to be hard some of the biggest boss battles are easy as pie. Heck I didn't even know you could use a giant sky shattering sword on the Sky King, I just killed the stupid thing with Soul Arrow and then found a useless sword after the battle. To me this game had so much potential and was so interesting, but so many little things about it were done oh so very wrong, and it just got to me to the point where I now hate the game.

World of Warcraft- I was a Vanilla WoW player, I got to level 60 with my Undead Warlock and then realized it was all pointless. Strung along by silly little levels that really didn't mean much and I eventually realized that while the world in the game was amazing, the combat was actually fairly shallow, the item system was hilariously stupid and the only fun thing about the game was the Arena and even that had it's problems. While I'm tempted to go back to the game every once in awhile (for basically the same reasons as Tycho http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/12/10/ ) I just have to think about it for awhile and then remember that the game is crap.

So come on now, I shared mine, you share yours.

Mass Effect 2

I don't hate it, but the community just killed it for me somehow.

Traded it in towards Borderlands GOTY.
Worth it.

The Sly Triology
When I first got the remastered version for my PS3 I was expecting a simple game, that was aimed for a young demographic. I remember wanting the game when I was a kid, but somehow I never got around to getting it. Anyways; the game turned out to be awesome in many ways. Really hard bosses and near-impossible mini-games.
I loved running around as Sly in the first game. Getting all the bottles and opening every vault was a fun choir, in spite of my usual hate for collectables.

The second game was less linear and they had corrected an annoying sound bug in the first one. I still had a lot of fun, but this time around you also got to play as Bentley and Murray. I never cared much for them in the first game. Bentley was annoying, but I thought Murray was rather cute. His constant talk about "The Murray" really grinded my gears though. Every time he opened his mouth I could feel my rage surfacing. Well, it was manageable. You still got to play a lot as Sly.

The third game on the other hand... The goal was to find new party members. I believe you had seven or eight in total by the end of the game. Getting to play as Sly got more and more rare the further you progressed in the game. Even when you took a job for Sly they switched to some other character. I was really disapointed. The game was fun, but Sly was the character that was fun to play.

Mass Effect 2. I loved it for the first Half an hour and then suddenly realised "this isn't anything like Mass Effect... how is this even a sequel?"

Can I say Demon's Souls because Yahtzee pointed out that it should be either Demon's Soul, or Demon Souls? Just saying it makes me not want to play it.

Final Fantasy VII, though, mainly because of the Compilation. Give it up already, Square.

Modern Warfare 2 mostly. Sure the story was bullshit but by gods the singleplayer was one big rollercoaster ride of pure adrenaline. Even the multiplayer was epic at first.

But as I rised through the ranks I got more and more confronted with the horrible balance in that game. And now I hate it's guts.

How does that happen, it's a single player game.

You can always go back for a month or two, explore the amazing new world with it's massively improved questing content, and then quit again when you have to do all the tedious chores again.

I know right?

Its mainly the hardcore fanatics constantly saying how damn good it is, how its apparently so fucking perfect when it still has flaws,
(mining, space exploration, repetitive combat and enemies and bunch which are personal issues with it). While its undeniably a great game I just got fed up with the sheer fanboyism and stupidity of at least a segment (a very...vocal segment) of its fanbase.

Also I agree with Modern Warfare 2, mainly because of the epic lag I was always getting because I could never find local matches, but thats a personal gripe. Whats not a personal gripe is the ridiculously unbalanced and F'ed up nature of the game.

Oblivion. That was my first 360 game, and I was really impressed with open world, and of course the graphics, and it was kinda fun starting out. Then I just slowly realized that the world wasn't actually very interesting, and it was too easy to get away with doing just about anything, and there's really not a lot to do that doesn't involve fetch quests in boring caves, and the combat got old fast, and all the people in the game shared the same three voices, and most of them have no personalities anyway, and the whole thing is really just an awful game with a pretty coat of paint. I'm not a big fan anymore.

I found it was Fable 1.

I loved it for the first three quarters of the game, stupid voice acting and all, and then... I don't know, it lost all it's appeal.

Oh, I do know! It went into a series of horrible escort missions with retarded AI. That's why I stopped. I turned my computer off and I've not gone back to it since.

I was going to say you pretty much described my relationship with World of Warcraft to a T there, but you had the same experience.

Good to know there are others out there who feel the same towards WoW as I do.

Friend of mine has been pestering me to get it, after reading that post, and many others like it elsewhere I surely won't.

The problem was that you can't get any mods on the 360, they were practically a requirement on the PC and I can't even think of playing without deadly reflexes (a combat mod) anymore.

Haha, maybe.

I was on the verge of getting into anime when the fanbase killed it for me.

...though that may have been a good thing.

I agree about the Sly Trilogy. In fact i bought My ps2 just this winter to play it, and honestly I am having a hard time finishing it. (I'm easily tricked by box art, i kept trying to play metroid prime cuz i thought WOW this looks and sounds good, and everyone says its awesome. But honestly, it should have been a third person shooter.)

BUT Hands down the one game that i REALLY loved that is grinding my gears HAS to be GOD OF WAR. The story was amazing, the upgrading was sweet. The fact that you got new moves instead of just getting stronger attacks was amazing. The puzzles were good, and even though Yahtzee hates them, I LOVED the quick time mini games. But honestly. For all of that I HATE the platforming. It has turned me against platform gaming. U fight off hundreds of minions, and barely get a scratch, but you die hundreds of times because something knocks you off a high beam, because you double jump once too far, or because you don't keep your balance. On top of that, its a game that you want to beat, so you can get to the next one, but just when you think you're done, it says "NOPE, UR IN HADES, NOW DO SOME MORE PLATFORMING". On top of that the Blade of Artemis was insanely powerful. It gave you twice as many orbs, and blocked stronger attacks, and no matter how much you upgrade the Blades of Chaos, u just can't get them to match the B.o.A.

P.S. If anyone can recomend a good shooter game for Ps2 that would be sweet.

Here's an idea: maybe you could compensate for all the undeserved high praise for average RPGs, by exposing yourself to the opposite. Google rpgcodex.

Another game That killed itself for me was Fallout 3.

AMAZING game play, decent graphics, and the first current generation sandbox/shooter i played. It was like comming out from under a rock after 10 years. The vats system got me back into gaming. The fact that ammo was scarce, and weapons could break, and you could pickpocket people...the customization and unlockables were insanely pleasing. But, for all its hoopla and glory, at the end of the day, It felt like it was spread thin. you could walk for twenty minutes before something interesting would happen, and half the time instead of completing the quests i got so frustrated that i just murdered everything in sight, cut up bodies and dropped them in the river because it suddenly became more fun. But then when there was no where to go, and i couldn't progress, or certain NPC's couldn't die, it just became tedious wandering in the desert, or the enemies in a new area would suddenly become so overpoweringly strong that i just wanted to chuck my mouse through my monitor.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response. I'm not sure how this one flew so far under the radar, but it's a great PS2 shooter, and if you like additional challenges to get upgraded weapons and gear and achievements, it has them in spades. The reward system reminded me of GoldenEye, because it requires skill to unlock new things, but not ungodly skill. Plus, bashing people's heads in with a riot shield is fun.
