What's that one game that Yahtzee says is the best game in the world...completely forgot the name right when I saw this thread. >_> something dizzy world....
Looks like you are going to have to watch through all the ZP's in one go so you can tell us! :-D
That would be Fantasy World Dizzy I think. A blast from the past.

Of a similar vintage I would like to put forward IK+ as my 'must play game before you die'. It's the most fun I've ever had in a fighting game.

Goldeneye, FF7, 8 and 9, Fallout 1 and/or2, Max Payne, Dungeon Keeper, Diablo, Monkey Island.

I think I could live on the above.

Homeworld - EPIC
Day of the Tentacle - hilarious
System Shock 2 - pants-wetting
Max Payne 2 - taut, no filler storyline + all the gameplay of MP1
The Last Express - unique gameplay mechanic
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - purist platforming & magical story
Star Wars: Tie Fighter Advanced CDROM - best space fighter sim ever
Grim Fandango - adventuring perfection, as long as you have a gamepad
Metroid - classic, sometimes frustrating free-roam exploration
Civilization / Colonization - ultimate turn based strategy; I still play Colonization fourteen years later
Sim City 2000 - everything post detracts from this
Eternal Darkness - a horror game that actually has a very good story and few BOO moments

Tried to name games that aren't yet in the thread, which means I agree with many of the games listed above. I'm happy someone got a shout out for MOO2, I love that game. Other games I love that are on here are Half life, Monkey Island 1-3, SMB3, Portal, Vampire Bloodlines, and the #1 Deus Ex.

I'ma start with Planescape: Torment. It's one of those dreaded 2nd edition AD&D Infinity Engine games, and it's one of the most heartwrenchingly beautiful things ever written for nerds who think in hit points. Don't like the isometric RPG style of gameplay? Play it anyway; the lackluster game mechanics are more than made up for by the unique, atmospheric setting, the desperately flawed and sympathetic psychopaths that hover around you, the sad and romantic storyline... the... well, everything. It shines lucent genius in every artistic department. If the opportunity ever presents itself to you to play this game, take it, it's gorgeous.

I'm convinced Katamari Damacy is one of the most potent natural cures for depression. You feel bad, you roll up everything into a tight little ball of love, and the theme song gets stuck in your head for seven months. Hurrah!

Everyone who plays and enjoys RPGs should have played Earthbound by now, if only for the cute and quirky reflection on the genre. Oh, and if anyone out there loves Earthbound and has a DS, you may want to look into a game called Contact; the design is very similar.

And speaking of old-school SNES RPGs, I'd like to take this space to mention Seiken Densetsu 3, one of the most eye-poppingly gorgeous things that little old system ever produced. It takes the pixels and turns it into pointillism, and apart from how pretty it is it's a damn fun game as well.

And in the realm of things you can check out right now, we have the Kingdom of Loathing (at www.kingdomofloathing.com/ ) and Geneforge (at http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/geneforge/ ). Geneforge is a clever little shareware RPG built by old-school-styled guy-in-basement game company Spiderweb Software, and has one of the more unique and interesting twists on the standard fantasy genre I've seen, putting you in the position of a Shaper, a member of a secretive and dominating magical sect who controls most of the known world through their ability to make and manipulate life. And as for Kingdom of Loathing, it's just hilarious.

QFT. One day I'm going to buy a used PS2 solely so I can play Katamari Damacy. Also, though I haven't played the newer ones, Mother (aka Earthbound Zero) was fantastic and currently the only jRPG I really enjoy.

Garry's Mod.
I do agree so much.

Anyway why haven't any one said Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time??? That, my freinds, is gaming as an artform.

Also i would reccomend three of the best GBA games ever:
1)Golden Sun: A JRPG by the book, nevertheless with great story telling, sympathetic characters and amazing effects and graphics (considering its a GBA game).
2)Golden Sun 2 (the lost age): An amazing sequel to an amazing game, some consider it to be better than the first.
3)Sword of mana: Another RPG (partially japanese-like), Freeroaming (after about 50%) hack and slash game play, sympathetic characters and not neccesarily a happy ending (wich just makes it ever more awesome, I really had a tough time not crying at the end cinema).

And the obvious games:
HL2 - All of 'em.
TF2 - Well I think it's one of the best multiplayer only games.
And the not so obvious:
PREY - W00t, gravity alteration AND portals (not usercreated)!
Sins Of A Solar Empire - Space RTS FTW.

Shin Megami Tensai: Persona 3

The dialouge/gameplay is so deeply delved into many different aspects of human existance and has very intelligent and witty conversations. It's worth the play through just to see the ending. The "good" ending anyway.

Trying to come up with games not yet listed:

Metal Gear Solid (ignore the earlier games, and the later games). It has a great plot that forces you to really contemplate what's going on, without getting too caught up in insane existentialist garbage (I'm looking at you "Sons of Liberty").

Super Mario RPG. It's the best crossover to date between Mario and any kind of RPG (excluding *maybe* the paper Mario series). You will not regret the purchase.

One of the Fire Emblem games. Some of the most difficult strategy RPG games ever. The plot tends to revolve around some kind of ultimate evil, but it's based in a sort of medieval recreation, so that's allowed.

The ultimate game you need, no, MUST play before you die is Tetris.

But, if you want something else:
- Banjo Kazooie
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Ico
- Sadly, I guess Pokemon should be played as well...
- Why not even a sports game
- FEAR
- Galactic Civilizations 2, Civilizations in space
- Total War series
- Mass Effect (practically anything made by Bioware)
- The Sonic series
- Psychonaughts
- Grand Theft Auto

Now I guess I need to snap my fingers to stop me from blabbing every game that hasnt been mentioned.

How about Descent?

I've been playing this game again lately and finding it still fun and equally difficult to get the controls down again.

3 will never be as good as 1 & 2, but that shouldn't keep someone from playing Descent and having some fun with the six degrees of movement in that game.

Dealin Burgers: "Silent Hill 1&2" and Seldon2639: "MGS" i couldn't agree more. I never got to finish the beloved Torment cause of an in-game glitch. then again i think the blind witchnurse found the thing i need to give to Pharod, in my gut.

Here's one for you die-hard classic to modern video gamers. Star Wars: Rebel Assault. first game i ever played, when i was 8. Shooting up stormtroopers, gliding through trees, then flying into a station and blowin' it up from the inside out (idk, the death star?) It was the perfect remedy for my 8 year old mind and obsession of star wars.

You all named some very sweet games that are in my massive collection and I do enjoy them a lot. I think i've played all the games i want before i die. So if you're reading this God, take me if you will. but there will always be another game i'll desperately need to play.
