A friend of mine showed me footage of minecraft back when survival mode was in it's early stages. To be honest I dismissed it as a boring puzzler of sorts that was about nothing but building roller coasters. Then came the day when the site was down and notch announced a free to play weekend. With me being bored I decided to see what the fuss was about and take about ten minutes to play it. I didn't stop until three hours and several wiki page references later. I am now eagerly waiting for adventure mode and all it's addictive glory.

inFamous won't say I loved it but based off the demo I thought it was an overrated piece of shit with bad controls. The story is better than Prototype but gameplay fails in comparison.
Here Here! It took forever to move around in that game, it was a core to get to missions making the sandbox work against the game. Bad sandbox design.

For me, it was the Harvest Moon series. Way, way back when I was in high school, my friend tried to get me to try HM 64, and I was just, "...farming sim? wut?" She finally convinced me to try it, and I've been hooked ever since.
Ditto, and since i should probably add one of my own,

Xenosaga. The characters are weird, the battle system seemed strange, and the difficulty curve is a vertical line, but it all comes together nicely in a way that i know would leave me pleasantly content if I could finish the damn things. (I suck at turn-based games)

Metal gear solid 4, so many people described it as awful and as having poor writing but I can't really see either of these complaints. Yeah some missions annoyed me (like tailing the world's stupidest rebel) but I think it's really awesome and I love the boss fights.

I think KOTOR1 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl.

I wasn?t really enjoying gameplay in KOTOR, couldn?t even get past the tutorial section. But after some time I really loved the story and characters and played it ?till the end.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl is another story. I wasn?t interested in that game at first. Then I played it a bit at my friends computer then bought it and since tha I?m fan of the franchise and can?t wait for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

Funny how my favorite games/series were first games I hated.
The first time I played FFX, KH, and Persona 3 were all the same. I disliked it and ended up chucking the controller. Yet somehow I ended up playing the games again "and the rest, as they say, is history."

Can't imagine where I could be as a gamer without those 3 games under my belt.
I just have to say that your joke glasses Yukiko avatar is hilarious.

OT: Um, I don't know if I have one. I don't remember playing a game that I've disliked outright. If you want to talk about the reverse situation, I might have gotten a bit bored with Oblivion and wanted something faster paced than Street Fighter 4.

Please forgive me, I know this is HERESY! of the highest HERESY! order, but mine would be Knights of the Old Republic.
When I first played it, I almost instantly dismissed it because of the combat system. A few months later, I picked it up again, then put it down four hours later. Had a snack, then kept on playing. I spent a good portion of my half-term playing KotOR, and it now ranks as one of my favourite games of all time.

World of Warcraft. It started out with hearing enthousiastic stories from a friend who was playing the original beta at the time, and deciding that I didn't really care too much for a weird-ass fantasy world you had to pay ?15 a month for.

Tried a free trial some two years later (patch 1.12), and sort of kept playing.

Some 3-4 years and a good 400 days playing time later I decided to call it quits.

Most recent case of this I can think of was Uncharted. When I first saw gameplay for it I thought it was just another generic shooter riddled with chest high walls. Then when I got a chance to play it I was amazed out how much fun I was having.

Halo. "Dur hurr, only ten year old males play that crap!"

Except its plot is awesome. And the characters are pretty darn cool. And it's really fun. And...oh crap, I actually like this!

Whoops. :p

Halo 3. I claimed it was filled with horrible fanboys and sucked, yet never played a lick of it.

Played it then, than fell in love. One of my favorite Series.

Friend of mine bought it and didnt shut up about it for months, I finally gave inand agreed to try one his guest passes- I bought the full game the next day.

EDIT= 1000 posts, oh yeah

Borderlands.

I seriously hated that game with a passion the first time I played a mere 10 minutes of it. Didn't play it again for months and months until finally I decided to try it out again and played some more of it. I basically fell in love with it. :3
