Fallout New Vegas. I hated Fallout 3 and as such dismissed NV when it first came out, but when I popped NV into the old 'box, I just wanted to continue playing and now I have over 50 hours of gameplay (which doesn't sound like alot compared to most people, but keep in mind I generally just play through the main story and rarely bother with side quests)

When I fist heard about X-Com and Fallout (1 or 2, can't remember which), and saw some gameplay, they looked boring and complicated (I was pretty young). Then a few years later when I actually played them, I realised how awesome they are. Now they are among my favourite games of all time.

Otogi: Myth of demons.
The first twenty minutes or so, caused me to judge the game harshly. But I've come to rethink my position after repeated playthroughs and now it's my favorite hack and slash game.

Sure I answered a thread similar to this not long ago but... Two Worlds. I had been told to play it if I loved RPGs so I picked it up for cheap on the Xbox. I walked out of the spawn point, got nailed by three groms and thought, "Fuck this."

A month or so later it popped up on Steam for £3 so decided to give it another chance, see if it was better on the PC and was really surprised that it was!

Pokemon. It was a fad when I was 6 and I dismissed it until my brother decided to rent a video of the anime, and the concept intrigued me. I bought pokemon red and the rest is history.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, GetCent.com

Halo. I was originally dismissive of the Halo games after failing hard on Halo 2 when playing at a friends house. I later get a used copy of Halo 3 for $30 thinking "I wonder what all the fuss is about Halo?" And that's how I discovered the brilliance of Halo.

I hated STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl because the beggining was bad and I was playing on a bad computer that got 20FPS with everything on low, I played more and now I am in love, the game is hard and really fun with a great setting

Infamous. I played the demo when it first came out at thought it was boring. Didnt help that prototype has far more exiting movement and I played that near the same time. Slowly jump up ledges on buildings? Or FUCKING RUN UP THEM to steal helocopters!!!

Anyway I got in on the PSN freegames and played it and found it rather enjoyable. Not "love" but it was a whole lot better this time around.

Weird that the demo completely unsold me on a game...
That is exactly what happened to me aswell. :D

I already had prototype which was WAY more fun, and the demo for infamous just irritated me. I just started playing it when I downloaded the PSN, please forgive us package and I really enjoy it now. :) The story is engaging but I still prefer Prototype. :p

For me, it was Okami, I originally thought 'So you pretty much run around and paint things to death?...No thanks'

Later, got into Japanese culture and heard the name Amaterasu. Researched her a bit and found under 'Popular culture references', Okami.
So I gave it a go, I am now completely hooked, what an idiot I was to dismiss it in the first place ^^

Its the movement I think. After running and flying around the city crazily you have to slowly climb every building? Not cool.

Quite a few actually.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is probably the main one. I got it a good decade ago. I was put off by the slow pace of the battle system and the amount of dungeon crawling. I just couldn't get into it after starting it up several times. Persona 3 came out and I absolutely loved it. This inspired me to give Persona 2 another shot. Once I got into it and the hang of the battle system I loved it. I was addicted to it for the 56 hours I played it. Was greatly challenging but never cheap. It is now one of my favorite RPGs ever. Now I can't wait for the PSP remake of Innocent Sin coming out in a few months.

Other than that I didn't get into Dragon Age Origins, Final Fantasy IX, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2 or Elder Scrolls IV after having them for quite awhile. Now they are all some of my favorite games of all time.

I would have to say Grand Theft Auto IV, because back during release, I was so hyped for the game, and had even gotten during launch day, but it was not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be another crazy adventure like San Andreas was (lucky Saints Row exists for that purpose), but instead it was "grim, dark, and realistic" and back then, not only did I not care to play a game like that, but I didn't really understand the story of it either.

I had shelved the game since 2008, not once looking back at it to complete it, however earlier this year, I got the urge to go through it again, so I had started a new game, and I had found myself really liking the story. I would have to say that Grand Theft Auto IV went from being a game that I had totally hated to being one of my favorite games of all time.

Fallout 3. I didn't like any part of my journey from the start of the game to Megaton.

3-6 months later, try it again and inexplicably love it. I'm not sure what changed, but FO3 is one of my favorite games now.

KotOR, I tried going into it with the completely wrong mindset, as I was fresh of having finished (and loved) Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy.

Then, a year later I gave KotOR 2 a try, I loved it so much despite it being unfinished that I gave the first one a try and loved it too.

Mind you that I loved them DESPITE not liking D&D RPGs.

Dark Messiah: Might and Magic for the PC.

Played the Console port first. Sucked. Totally.

Then I played the PC version, and just got frustrated. I felt like I couldn't do things I was accustomed to doing in that type of game.

Came back later and realized: that's the point. Now I friggin' love the game, and it has me really excited for Arkane's Dishonored.

The combat is tense, unforgiving, and really forces you to be imaginative. Yes, it overuses the "Kick an enemy into trap" mechanic, but that's just if you're boring and unimaginative. Much more fun to Throw oil onto a guy, then set him on fire and kick him into his mates. Or Charm one guy, kill the rest, then before the charm wears off, bean him with a rock. Or Cast ice on the ground get their attention and make them slip and fall off a cliff.

For people used to the Player Character being this unstoppable bad ass, able to take on waves of enemies without flinching, it's a tough adjustment to make. It's a great fit for anyone looking for something different and more cerebral combat.
