Right now I've got a friend at work driving me to play Bioshock and Half-Life 2.

I really just can't be bothered. I'm actually starting to have fun with how frustrated he's getting each time I remind them I've never played either. Cruel but fun.

It really depends on who is suggesting it to you, and whether you refuse to play it because hating popular things is cool, or it's just not your type of game.

It would benefit you to do some research on a game before making your decision, especially if so many people are giving you recommendations. For me, it's Black Ops and Minecraft. I'm sorry, I just don't enjoy FPSs, and I don't see myself being able to get into Minecraft. (The injokes are pretty funny though, I have to admit)

(Though I just started the Earthbound series with Mother, and I have to admit, it's kind of sad that it has such little popularity for how good it is.)

Probably the Duke Nukem franchise. Gave Duke Nukem 3D a chance, but I couldn't complete it because I didn't comprehend some of the solutions to the puzzles. Even though Forever is coming out I'm not giving it another shot.

This is something I've never understood. Why on earth would I hate something popular to try and be cool? Isn't the point of trying to be cool to fit in with the popular people? I still don't see how pretending to hate popular things will get you any friends. XD I have never disliked a game for the purpose of "being cool" or "being different".

To fit in to the social crowd.
I suspect that a lot of people hate Justin Bieber because "it's cool" to hate Justin Bieber, and have never heard any of his music. The same could go for any music artist.

A lot of people hate WoW because there are a lot of people that hate WoW, although a lot of people hate WoW without ever having played the game themselves, or are relying on hearsay.

I'm not accusing you specifically of such, I'm just trying to cover all my bases here. :)

What's the point here?

"A lot of people like this game for some reason, therefore I won't play it! TAKE THAT, SOCIETY!"

For me, it's Half-Life. It has so much hype surrounding me and so many people have told me 'I know you don't like shooters, BUT this game is SO AMAZING it will CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE on the whole FPS genre.' It's just not for me; it doesn't interest me... and with the hype its guaranteed to disappoint.

This can happen with really good games, too. For example, I finally caved and recently played Portal and, while it was fun, it had so much hype to live up to it was disappointing to me.

Call of Duty: Black Ops. CoD has become a trend now and I'm tired of the realistic military themed shooters. Gimme some Duke Nukem, Half-Life and Bulletstorm style shooters.

Minecraft. Sounds kind of boring.

I also refused to play Mass Effect because @Lost in the Void: kept nagging me to do so but I eventually obliged and... well at least I don't have to wait as long for ME3 >_>

I'll give anything a go once. But if I don't like it I will never listen to that person's recommendations again.

Also,

Suggested -> recommended.

They can suggest playing Duke Nukem to you, but if they suggested Duke Nukem to you then they reminded you of Duke Nukem.

Refusing to play a game becasue it's been suggested to you is fucking stupid.
Suggesting and incessant nagging are two different things. When a handful of people suggest I play a game, (ex. U.N Squadron) I'll usually give it a shot. But when countless people INSIST I play a game and bug me until I do so, (ex. Chrono Trigger) THAT is when I won't do it. I mean, it's not just with games that this happens. No matter how good something may be, the more people annoy me about it, the less I feel like doing it.

A large chunk of the gaming community act like Sam I Am. :/

BlackOps and Duke Nukem Forever, BlackOps because nobody ever shuts up about it, and DNF because the person that kept hounding me about it recently decided I was too naive to have a girlfriend without him giving me some long talk over the phone, but I never answered because the cell was off, and I don't text anyways. (I'm 19, almost 20)
I think I speak for the masses:"Huh??" Do explain......

OT: During the summer, it was that Laura Croft arcade game. All my friends were telling me to get it, I did not. A few of my friends really enjoyed Too Human as well, although I don't think they're the reason I won't ever play it. Plants vs. Zombies will probably never squeeze anything from my wallet though. At this point, it's been soooo over hyped that it will seem like a poor tower defense game.

Sometimes it's because they're actually good and want to share their experiences. I know I've been suggesting games to a friend for years. He always refuses and when I finally manage to convince him, he swears he found a new favorite.

I usually play anything at least for a bit. People have been trying to get me to play Fear but I don't get scared almost at all and it just bores me.
Good. The gunplay is boring and the best parts (the big scares themselves) are hours apart.

Black Ops, because I'm sick of CoD and most of the people who recommend it to me have only been playing it since 4 or WaW, not since the first like I have.
So that makes their opinions not matter because they havent been into the series as long as you?...

OT: I dont really have any games that i wont try out, if there is a game that someone says is really good i try remember it and i rent it sometime

I can understand the feeling, it often comes from a desire to avoid possibly disliking something your friends/whatever do, and people naturally want to avoid possible disagreements.

Personally I have one rule, if they're recommending sequels I'll ignore them, if they're recommending new games I have a look at it. Since if its a sequel I'll either know about it already or didn't like the previous titles and don't care about a new one.

So you won't play a game because others are playing it and extolling its virtues?

I wonder, do you not listen to bands if you consider them too 'mainstream'?

Joke's on you. I don't listen to bands! (Seriously, I just listen to game music. I don't know anything about music) XD
