I would agree with pretty much this whole list. I always wanted to play WoW, but I could never justify 15 bucks a month, thats like a gram and a half of the good stuff where I come from.

I will not bother with newer games that i have not got round to yet. Although i have played them, i think that the old lucas arts games such as the first two monkey island and indiana jones and the fate atlantis games should be played by all gamers. Final fantasy vii deserves a metion too. Being a gaming freak there are next to none i can think of that i havent played to some extent but i guess my biggest miss is the mgs series

to really understand the RTS genre, if you're into them, you should check out Command and Conquer 2, Warcraft 3, Starcraft and either of the Red Alerts (and Age of Empires II...) but if you don't really care about the 'history' of games and just want some all round fun then do try CnC 3 and World in Conflict (and compare them...)

in terms of fps, i mean, jeez, try out quake, cs 1.6, doom, duke nukem (take your pick) etc etc etc and then play some more modern games (any of the 900 billion out there) and see where its all come from.

and rpg? you gotta play diablo II...

Homeworld 2 should be on the list of any RTS fan's list.

Kirby super star. It has been scientifically proven that the 16 bit era was the best era in gaming history. Kirby super star is one of the games from the SNES awesomegasm library that I havent played that comes to mind.

OK, that's ridiculous and untrue. The late nineties Blade Runner is on your list? What about Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Tha Apple II's Chivalry? Leisure Suit Larry: Passionate Patti Does a Little Under Cover Work?

This isn't a thread about games you feel others need to play, or upcoming games you're looking forward to. But what are some older games you feel you need to hunt down and play to truly consider yourself a gamer?

Some of mine:

-Beyond Good and Evil: Everyone says it's awesome, and whenever there's a game that the few people who buys it loves it, they're usually right. Case in point: Psychonauts.


-Metal Gear Solid series: Such an iconic video game series, yet I've never played a single title, and now with the compilation at $30, there's no excuse for me to not pick it up and give it a try.

-Silent Hill 1 & 2: Same reason as above, minus the compilation thing, those I have a feeling will take some hunting down.

- Half-Life 2: I played the first one up until this elevator shaft rubble-jumping thing that I could never get past, and gave up. So having never finished the first game, I felt I'd be missing parts of the plot. I lost my copy of Half-Life and eventually became disinterested in the series until recently.

Can't think of any others right now.

My recommendation, just play Metal Gear Solid 1 on the PC then play MGS3: Subsistence for the PS2.

MGS2 and MGS4 are over-hyped and MGS4 is definitely not a PS3 console seller. BTW MGS3 is a prequel set 40 years earlier in the 60's and if you get the Subsistence version (£20/$40 on Amazon) you will get the same camera as in MGS4. MGS3 has superior gameplay, Bosses and story that is good even by itself (while 2 and 4 just end up a mess).

So MGS1 for PC and MGS3: Subsistence (Subsistence is the best version) is the way to go, take this from someone who has followed this series for the past decade.

Well pretty much all the great PC games that my puny computer can't play like:
COD4
Bioshock
Crysis
Condemned
Grid
Not forgetting all those Xbox 360 games that are also released on the Games For Windows brand. Hopefully my new PC-build will be up to scratch to even play Crysis at Very High, now I just have to save up for the graphics card...

There are also the classic pre-NT games I wanted to play but never got round to tracking down and using on DOSBOX:
-Shadow warrior and Rise of the Triad
-Star Wars: Dark forces (and the Jedi Knight sequels)
-System shock 2 (especially with the SHTUP mod to upgrade the textures)
-Unreal (wait that's on steam, I should get it now!)
-all those classic NES/SNES games on emulators like Super Metroid, Castlevania and Zelda

But the Best buy for unplayed games is the grossly under-appreciated Nintendo Gamecube that goes for a measly $20 yet has such classics as:
-Zelda: Wind Waker (don't be afraid of the cell shading)
-Zelda: Twilight princess (This is far far better than the more common Wii version)
-Zelda: Collector's Edition (hard to find but perfect ports of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and some Zelda classics)
-Metroid Prime (this one's got it all)
-Resident Evil Remake (Perfectly captures the Original's style yet ranks it up a notch)
-The entire Resident Evil series re-released (improved and cheaper) so is great for a series catchup
-Eternal Darkness (should have knocked the under-performing Silent Hill sequels off the psychological horror top spot)
-Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2
-Megaman Anniversary Edition
and so on, as well as with multiplatform games it generally has superior graphics to PS2.
