The R-type series, namely Delta and Final.

The story is just super intriguing and the controls are pretty tight (save for the speed boosting into ceilings) and the use of scenery is very well fleshed out.

You should try out the Ninja Gaiden series for some old school tough as nails fast paced gameplay. For some reason that's all I can think of for now. :S

Persona 4- Very long, very Japanese, and unforgiving turn based JRPG battle system, but the characters are the most human and believable ones I've come across in any game, the story is engaging, the music is superb, and the gameplay can get you hooked if you're into JRPGs

Okami- The art is second to none, the music is great, the characters are simplistic but fun and enjoyable, the gameplay is tight, there is a painting mechanic where the whole world is a watercolor and you paint fire or wind or the sun onto it to attack enemies, and you also play as a dog, which leads to digging holes or talking to animals or having fun interactions with people. The story drags a little, but very fun to play

Psychonauts- It's a platformer where you're a kid at psychic summer camp and you explore the minds of people around the camp. The platforming isn't perfect by any means, but the level design is second to none, like the level in a paranoid delusional guy's mind becomes a twisted suburb where undercover agents wage war on girl scouts, or a lungfish's mind puts you as a giant defending a city of tiny lungfish.
with the exception of Devil Summoner (i didn't really like it) anything Shin Megami Tensei, so in addition to the above games,

STM: Nocturne - its LONG and harder then Persona 4, but really good and multiple endings.

Shadow Hearts 1-3 - hard, its not, but its fun, the characters area neat and the powers are pretty awesome.

Odin Sphere - its pretty mostly, really pretty, shows the kinda of graphical beauty you can get when you stop thinking in polygons. the story and characters are pretty good to, with the chapters taking part at a certain point in the story's time line ( the first character you play being the 'last' in the time line)

Demons Crest - very thing that made the SNES area great, tight controls, graphics that still hold up today and a challenge that will send lesser gamers running.

Ooh, so many to choose from. I'll talk about a game that I've never heard anyone else talk about...

Toonstruck!

As bizarre as it gets, even by adventure game standards. Zany characters, lush hand-drawn locations and great chemistry between the two protagonists. Give it a go - I believe there's still a free 'Shareware' edition knocking around the webs somewhere!

Metro 2033 hands down. Not for the gameplay or anything, just for the story. It was honestly the best story in a game I've ever seen

Well I don't think any of these have been posted yet

Harvest Moon: (the snes and gba were my favorite) Probably the only game series that I found really fun and yet had no combat what so ever

Starcraft: the second one is REALLY good but the first is amazing. Aside from the excellent multiplayer, the singleplayer is pretty much my all-round favorite game.

Pokemon is oddly engaging, don't be put off by the "for kids" stigma they are pretty fun games

Crono trigger: if you like RPG's and haven't played this game PLAY THIS GAME, its a story about a time traveling guy, a princess, a genius inventor, a robot, a frog knight, a cavewoman, and a dark lord who all team up to fight a world ending alien

I would say Starcraft II. Not everyone is into RTS games (I wasn't when I bought it.) and I'm still iffy on them, but I have beaten it and I do love it for what it is. I have recommended it to people who hated RTS games and they enjoyed it! So I'll totally say that :3

Bastion is a great game, with a cozy narrator and smooth game play that flow together hand in hand, its a absolutely one of my favorite games from last year.

The Total War series is good, with Rome onward (Being the only ones I've played). The others are Medieval 2 (And Expansions), then Empire+Napoleon, both being Gunpowder era line battles. Chose which time period float your boat.

The Fallout Series is also good, but if you'd rather a FPS-style RPG, go with 3 or New Vegas;
for classic role playing, the first two are better choice.

I'm not going to stop talking about this for a long time.

Katawa Shoujo

It's 100% free and was an amazing experience. Though calling it a game is a bit of a stretch...

EDIT: Though you said you are young, this game is 18+ so keep that in mind.
You can always just turn of adult content. Bye bye 18+ rating.
No matter what, whether you keep the sex scenes on or turn them off they still will be..."puts on glasses"
Disabeled....

YEAHHHHHHHHHHH

I would add my voice to those recommending Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It would be impossible to overstate its impact on me as a gamer, and was probably the first game that really got me thinking about studying game design (which I am now in college for).

I would also recommend AI War if you an RTS fan since it adds some really interesting mechanics to the genre that, as far as I know, aren't really explored in other strategy games

Shadow of Rome: Its an old Gladiator game, extremely gorey and fun. It has stealth sections that have mixed results but it breaks up the action well. The story takes liberties with the history but me'h its an alright tale. The fun really is in the combat, its brutal, hilarious and a little arcadey.

Gladius: Another Gladiator game, its a very good one at that. A TBS where you build up a Gladiator school and fight in tournaments. Very good, fun and tactical game.

AVP:Extinction: A RTS based on the AVP franchise, its a bit of fun, its split up into three campaigns one for each race and they really do control extremely differently and its fun how it works for each. Its not perfect, its a little short and could do with a skirmish mode and the controls aren't great. However I think its worth a try.

Also the Kingdom Heart series is a must have. Combining Disney with Final Fantasy, its a good story has a brilliant soundtrack and a good combat system I recommend it.

I can think of many, many more but I'm pretty tired, its very early in the morning so I can't really be bothered to write more. I imagine many others here will help out with more suggestions.

Henry Hatsworth in The Puzzling Adventure.

It's a DS game where the top screen is an action platformer and the bottom screen is a Bejewelled style puzzle game. Both are well executed and the interaction between the two is very well done. On top of that, the game has a great sense of humor that works very well with it's cartoonish art style.

Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner (Anubis: Zone of the Enders in Japan).

A fantastic action game for the PS2, and infinitely superior to its predecessor (ZOE 1 was "the game that came with the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo" for a reason). A lot of recent action games could stand to take a lesson from its variety of weapons, enemies and environments, brief cutscenes that tell a story without getting in the way, and brilliantly paced high-speed aerial combat. I'm also quite fond of its mix of cell-shaded characters and robots with more traditionally rendered backgrounds.

Even though two of the three are only available in Japan, everyone should try to play the Mother series. Amazing stories, amazing music, and one of the few video games that actually made me care about the characters. It left a great impression on me. There's also some amazing witty dialogue and humor. If you live in Japan, great, buy the games and play them. For the rest of the world, you can buy Earthbound for the SNES, but if you want to play Mother and Mother 3, you need an emulator and a ROM plus translations.

I would say Heavy Rain, but that's not so much a game as an interactive movie.

Most of my responses are older generation games (PS1 era) but anyway:

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) I know it's been re-released but I think retro console version is better gameplay wise.

Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) think of the most over the top game that was released in 2011. Now times that by 10 and ad a war about squirrels fighting teddy bears.

the original Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, Best of the series IMO.

Painkiller (PC and I think PS2) It's just awesome.

Duke Nukem 3D. just do it

Half-life 1 2 etc.

Halo. All of them.

Portal goes without saying

Elder scrolls 3,4,5 & Fallout 1,2,3,NV Best WRPGs

Final fantasy 7. Replace the turn based combat and it's a solid game

Mass Effect series. Well why not

CoD 2 and 4 The only good ones

Hey very nice idea, and you put it well in your introduction. I'm an old gamer, so my choices start from the mid 80's. I'm not sure how much playable they are today, but I think that games like OutRun, Bomb Jack, Defender of the Crown, Green Beret (Rush 'N Attack in the USA) and Monty On The Run were great and very fun to play.

I wasn't gaming at all in the 90s, at least not until 1998, so my picks from this era will be: Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider (1-4), Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Broken Sword and Civilization II and III.

From the early and mid 2000s, I would propose: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Shadow of Memories (I think it's Shadow of Destiny in the USA), Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X and Resident Evil 4.

From the late 2000s until today: World of Warcraft, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, BioShock, Call of Duty 4, inFamous, Demon's Souls, Fable 2, Dead Rising 2 and Dark Souls.
