I admit I had that bias going into it, and I do appreciate that they made an effort to move away from unrelenting shooting. And the variety of critters and foes is pretty neat and all but....Zechnophobe said:I'm guessing you didn't play Halflife 1 when it first came out did ya? Comparing it to the games of the time, it was so incredibly ahead of its time... well, it just isn't as impressive now when all games have stories built in, and characters, and potentially cool stories.Mr Companion said:Hooray somebody else agrees! You do mean the first Half Life, yes? Not hl2? Because hl2 is fun, but the first feels like its from the same bag as Halo combat evolved. Both Halo and Hl just pissed me off more than anything. I played both in the space of a week in order to find out what all the fuss is about and left with a foul taste in my brain.Arisato-kun said:Half-Life. I wish I could be as ecstatic about it as everyone else but it came off as mediocre to me in every way.
Comparing games accross time frames can be very difficult. You just miss out on some of the subtlety. Deus Ex was another game that was amazing when it first came out, but doesn't really age well. I can't even PLAY that game anymore now, because of how ghetto it looks/feels.Mr Companion said:I admit I had that bias going into it, and I do appreciate that they made an effort to move away from unrelenting shooting. Well i guess I'm just not a fan of the gameplay is all. I hate the feeling that I am fighting dudes for no real reason. If I kill a room full of guys I have proven my ability to kill a room full of guys. Pushing me into another room full of guys and expecting me to do it again is pointless. Other retro games such as Deus Ex are fantastic, and to me seem far more innovative in design. I suppose I have just been spoilt by excellent design is all.
