Well, I have got multiple copies of Fallout, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario 64, Pokemon Yellow Version, Yoshi, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Sacred Cards, Paper Mario, Lego Indiana Jones, Dragon Warrior, and I think that's it. Sorry, OCD made me type all of that, I'm half tempted to go back and alphabetize it...

I won't even go with a hypothetical situation. I will go with games I actually have purchased twice for whatever reason.
I've bought Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War about 6 times, the same is true of Diablo and Diablo 2. I don't know what it is about old Blizzard games but I always lose them or destroy them. Thankfully I linked all my stuff to Bnet 2.0 and I don't need to do that anymore.
I've bought City Of Heroes three times, for friends. Amnesia Dark Descent I also purchased about a dozen times, for many friends and to support the developer.
I bought Bad Company 2 three times also, for friends. The same true of Battlefield 3 preorders. I could go on. Long story short, I buy a lot of games for my friends.

Games I have bought multiple times.
Master of Orion 2: 1st CD died from over use

X-Com/UFO Enemy Unknown: I have the non AGA and the AGA version for Amiga, a copy that came free with a CD from Computer Gaming World (had a multitude of older games on it), and a copy on Steam.

X-Com Apoc: PC copy and digital copy on Steam

Starcraft: I think I have somehow acquired like 3 copies of the original and 2 of BW

Civilization 2: PS1 and PC copy

Sim City 2000: Amiga and PC version

KOTOR: Received a copy from 2 different people on the same birthday. (not buying per say but i didn't return it so.. :p )

Borderlands: PC and PS3 Copy

Theme Hospital: Somehow have 2 copies

Roller Coaster Tycoon: Bought the original and bought the pack with the two expansions.

Kingdom Hearts 2 anyone? Fantastical game right there.

I lost my old copy of Halo 2. Then I bought a new one. Then they turned the online off. Such a good freakin game...

If we're throwing remakes into the equation. Pokemon, you has me guilty. I bought Blue. My original GameBoy (the 9 ton one that leaked radiation) and Blue were stolen. I bought a SECOND copy. Then the Yellow enchanced release, with a limited edition GameBoy color came out on the week of my birthday. Skip ahead, and after renting Gold and Silver for awhile (2000's Blockbuster. get at me brah) I bought Gold. Then got Silver as a gift. Then got Silver AGAIN as another gift. Then got the Crystal enchanced version. Then I bought Sapphire. Then FireRed, which was a remake of the original. Then LeafGreen, which is the same. Then Emerald Version, the enhanced of Ruby and Sapphire. Then Diamond, then HeartGold - a remake of Gold Version.

Jeeze. Pokemon, you really know how to push your product.

I own a PC and Xbox version of Borderlands, L4D, L4D2, and Fallout New Vegas. I owned a Sega, but never owned the Sonic games (BlockBuster, 1990's. Get at me). I did get a PC port when I was in, like, the 6th grade, with all the sonic games. Which I decided to then buy on the Xbox. And I have a few on the PC under different names as well. Same with Sonic Adventures DX. My GameCube came with a Zelda collection, and I have a copy of the original Zelda for the GBA. Oh, and the GBA. Final Fantasy re-releases? Plus ones on the iPod touch?

And that sums it up. I rented a lot of games in my days. But I have a nack for buying multiple copies of the same game for different devices. Impulse buying FTW. Usually, if I buy a game multiple times, they are re-released versions with enhanced gameplay (see Pokemon), or theres a large gap in between purchases. Or if Steam has a sale. Its nice to have a copy of good games on a console (which I prefer for playing games on), and a copy for my PC, which I can pack up and take with me a lot easier (like my Laptop. Or Desktop, since I don't have to go through the pain of tearing apart my mancave just to free the xbox and its components.)

You get the point.

I remember getting Max Payne 1 & 2 for the Xbox back in the day. Then I sold them later on, but a couple years later I saw MP2 up for $2.00. Best $2 I ever spent. After that I saw them on Steam and had heard about all the cool mods and stuff for the PC version, so I bought both again on Steam just because.

Also I got the Orange Box for PS3 because I'm a dumbass, and after hearing about all the cool TF2 updates on the PC I rebought that and will never regret it. Also I later got Portal on Steam while it was free, so I don't know if you count that or not. Still don't have HL2 on PC though :(

I actually did end up buying the first Deus Ex twice. Also, I got both Steam and non-Steam editions of Mass Effect 1 & 2. Out of necessity, not any particular desire, of course.

Mass Effect 1, I already have a copy of the game, but I think it's getting broken from over use. I need to get a new copy anyway, so I suppose I would buy it twice.
I did that already, once for my xbox then when I moved away and my brother kept the console I bought it for the PC. It was better on the xbox though.

Another game I'd buy twice is Diablo II but only because I can easily get the battlechest for $20.

Dragon Age 2, because I really enjoyed it and it certainly needs all the support it can get.

Don't attack me; I don't want to fight over this.

Twice?! I can barely buy a game ONCE in this bloody economy. Here (in Australia) they actually sell new release games for $110, even though last time I checked the Australian dollar was worth more than that of the U.S.! Nevertheless, there are 2 games that I regret getting rid of and would buy again: Hitman Blood Money and Bioshock.

And a few more I can't remember.

Oddly enough I have a hard time finding PC games I bought again, though I did buy Now and Then, Here and There (anime series) a second time, this time in collector's edition.

I bought Deus Ex again on Steam, along with a few other titles, but nothing else really springs to mind.

I bought Team Fortress 2 three bloody times.

I got the orange box for 360, then realized TF2 was great...on PC, so I bought it there, then I realized why bother with Orange Box on 360 when the PC verson was better? I bought the Orange Box on super sale ...and you don't get to gift TF2, but you can gift any HL game if you get a dupe.

My friend gifted me Borderlands on PC when I bought it for 360 already.

I got Mass Effect on PC when I found out 2 was going to be cheaper on PC also better. And it was totally worth it.

The entire Medal of Honor series on PS2. I had them all and loved them but foolishly sold them for a PS3. I love my PS3, but until they re-release them I will never feel the same.
