Gotta go with half life. Granted it had its place for the day it was made and Ill even go so far as to say it effected how games were developed in the future. However it is not engaging or interesting for me. Its story is in a state of quantum flux where its barely there and completely impenetrable at the same time. Gordon Freeman is not a good character either because we cant really roleplay him as we want to, its not like Dark souls where the chosen undead was a complete blank slate, or Dragon age origins where you had a few bits and could fill in the rest, Freeman is a fleshed out character but the irony is we never get to see that in half life.

At this point, nearly anything Blizzard makes. I used to love their games, but ever since WoW there seems to be this vaguely sinister change of focus that treats everyone who plays their games like two parts consumer to one part lab rat. There's also this weird feeling that everything is being designed for what amounts to a very large niche audience. Either you're waiting for the next game with bated breath, or you simply don't care; there's little middle ground, and little attempt to move anyone in the latter camp across the divide.

Hearing about each new game feels like watching the make-up of a once great performer crack and peel as they try to make up for lost enthusiasm and talent with sheer scenery-chewing. I want them to go away before they truly bomb a game.

There were a bunch of games I was sick of hearing about but for the past two months the Dark Souls fanbase has topped every single game I ever hated hearing about x1000.

Really I don't give any fucks about what it does to the game at all because that's just it, "it's a game" and that's what it will always be and nothing more because if they think it's the biggest challenge ever for them then boy are they going to be fucked over later in life.

In the end I just want to see the game crash and burn so the entire fanbase can learn to move on and then realise the lesson of actually moving on instead of telling others the same bullshit excuses over and over.

Realise it's a game and realise there's more to do outside than brag about how you beat a video game others will have beaten before you or will beat in the end regardless.

As a last note I'd like to stick DS into the BDSM hardcore tag since the fanbase love the feeling of getting abused but hey I'm sure they wouldn't mind the real life kind either since it will be another epic challenge for them.

Hmmmm.

Games mine sick of hearing about would be:

Assassin's Creed (any single one of them)
HALO (the ever undying franchise)
Mass Effect (aka Leisure Suit Larry in Space)

Pretty much every game I have played TBH. I don't feel like talking about them 'cause either they're that old that everything that can be said has been said, or their that crap that I honestly don't give a damn. I'll argue over them for the sake of conversation, but I'd prefer to hear about games I haven't played - preferably new and upcoming ones that haven't been released - instead. Its far more interesting as they are still in the "Might be crap" category rather than the "Definitely crap" category.

Any game about zombies anymore. They weren't that interesting to begin with. I know they're cannon fodder but I'm sick of them. Not just bored, but sick.
Even though I did Resident Evil cosplay and consider George Romero's first three "of the Dead" flicks to be my personal Holy Trilogy, I gotta agree. Zombies need to take a break for a generation and let another stock monster fill the void.
Yeah dude, we need some fucking Lake Monsters, Mummies, or just go through scooby doo and find some sweet monsters for games.

Fuck Dark Souls. That game was difficult not because it was hard, but also because there were some mad gameplay flaws. The story was fuckin' nothing since it was all 'interpretable' and whatnot. That's a mix of both shit game design and lazy ass writing. Easy Mode for players who want to play the game and not spend half the fucking time moving slowly from one enemy to the next? Shut up. Some players want it. If you don't, don't play it on easy. IT'S NOT FORCING EASY ON YOU! It;s giving others a goddamn choice! Besides, the game is averagely shit anyway.

Oh this is an easy one, Mass effect 3. Loved the game, loved the franchise, hated the endless debates about how crappy the ending was and how bioware was dying, blah blah blah. It still goes on now, and the game has been out for more than half a year.

Mass Effect 3.

The ending wasn't as bad as the echo chamber would have you think it was, and even if it was that bad, the 99% of the game prior to it was A-grade storytelling.

People still can't stop complaining about it. As I speak, a 14-page thread on this very forum is current raging about that ending like a very stupid and supernaturally determined man attempting to solve a Rubik's cube with hands made of butter. The whole circle-jerk is a) pointless, b) embarrassing, and c) obscures some of the game's unexpectedly brilliant achievements, like a multiplayer mode that was actually really good and supported by free DLC for the better part of a year after release.

It's one of the most serious cases of hype backlash in the history of gaming, and the worst part is that it made sensible and mature discussion of the ending's actual, real flaws almost impossible amidst all the white noise. It's gotten to the point where otherwise intelligent and rational people will sincerely and without irony state that Mass Effect 3 is a sloppy turdburger being forced into their mouths by a fat man in a fluroescent-pink gimp suit, solely on the basis that its ending wasn't very good.

That's dumb. It's one of the dumbest controversies I've ever witnessed, and I feel dumber for witnessing it.

Nothing these days.

Skyrim was the most recent game that irked me.
So much praise that even these forums were flooded with threads for months.

I've invested about 65 hours and that was pushing past my point of boredom.
I want to love the game like I did Oblivion years ago but it's clear the old formula just doesn't do it anymore.

So many people here consider it the best game ever made and I couldn't even place it in the top 10 of 2011.
Oh well, to each their own.

There have only been 2 posts correcting the spelling in this thread's title, and neither of them were snarky or condescending.

What's happened to the Escapist I've known and loved?
a couple years ago if you made a single grammar/spelling mistake in some threads, you'd get quoted 4 times correcting/bashing you down for being so poor in the english language. it was quite a different time.

OT: Probably COD games, and the only reason I get annoyed, is that so many people I hear call them "THE BEST GAME EVER BRO, YOU GOTTA GET IT, SERIOUSLY" when that is the only fucking games they play/have played, and they go on and on about it when they have next to zero experience in any other game in the past 10 years, yet claim it's the best.

it gets very fucking old and very fucking annoying, I have no problem with you enjoying the game, but please do not preach my damn ear off like you're some kind of gaming yoda of wisdom, because you're quite the opposite in fact.

Well since there's a lot of mention of Darksouls, I direct you to read my thoughts in the following thread:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.397028-Dark-Souls-PC-Current-State#16184152

Honestly I don't get sick of any game, just the ravings of fans and trolls. But stupidity is always annoying and easily ignored.

I am beyond sick of hearing about Dark Souls difficulty. Yeah, it was a good game but it wasn't THAT good and it wasn't THAT tough.

The Witcher 2. Man, shut up. We get it you love the game, thats no reason to barge into every thread tenuously connected to an RPG or RPG mechanic shouing that The Witcher did it better.

Those two games are the only ones i have ever felt like the people talking about them are masturbating while doing so.

Basically everything Nintendo related.
I never played any of Zelda, Metroid or Mario games, and I just don't care about them! I don't hate them though. The thing that I don't get is why are those games are such big freaking deal in North America!
