I think that as far as gaming goes in university, you're probably not going to be the only one that brings their consol, and if people are going to break in and steal it, they're probably not going to stop at just your consol. I'd say that if there're no rules against it, and you feel reletively safe bringing it, bring it.

Freind of mine just took his peice of shit chunky PS2 and battered Mega Drive (Yes it's a mega drive!! NOT a genesis!). I would say the more worthless it is the better for ganing at uni.
I hadnt thought of that. I still have my first Xbox and the old grey brick Gameboy. KOTOR and Super Mario Land could probably keep me sane for at least my first year :)

Just go round som car boot sales and pick up some old games for you original x-box and gameboy. I can personally recomend Psychonaughts for you X-Box. Hell hit ebay and use your first year cating up on games you might have missed. Im in the middle of taking a holiday from modern gaming, bought a SNES with about 30 games, a new N64 and Mega Drive all off e-bay. It feels good to go back to my roots.

I recetly bought a Sega Master System (8bit, like mid 80s) for £7 with 5 games (it's a crime no one remembers this system yet the NES is worshiped) and that will keep me busy for ages.
That's a great idea. I had Psychonauts on the PC, it was kinda just before I started really playing games, but my older brother was a gamer so I got plenty of exposure. I remember playing Trespasser on the PC years ago!

Car boots sound like a great idea though! Ebay should be good to pick up a few old gems as well :)

Someone in my old tutorial last Semester got their copy of Herodotus stolen first week in halls, If people are willing to steal educational books then I guess a Xbox is no problem.

I'm a student and in honesty most students have laptops or something like that sure there will be thefts if you are not careful but it shouldn't be a bother, also insurance...

Alright so I'm shipping off to university in September (studying music in London just out of interest). So there's a big question I wanted to ask you guys. Is it a good idea to take my games console to keep in my dorm room? I'm staying in halls/dorms so I'll have my own room with a lock but I guess people would still be able to come in my room at various times. Would it be stupid to take my Xbox and not expect it to get stolen or something like that?

Also, just post your general experiences of how your gaming life changed while you were at university.
Well depends, how long are you going to be there? I think its a bad idea since A) It could get stolen or B) you might procrastinate and push everything to the side for gaming.

I live in an on campus suite (4 rooms, 2 bathrooms, one common area) and lock my door everytime I leave MY personal room. If you are able to lock the door to your personal room go ahead and take your console, but leave the game boxes at home and stick the discs in a CD case. If you are sharing a room with anyone else then no, leave it at home. If you like gaming alot and cannot concentrate, don't bring it.

I'm gonna be in the halls for a year, then most likely will get a place with some other students and share the rent between us.

You both make very good points in that I have an amazing capacity to procrastinate :p

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I'm planning to get an old Xbox 1 casing and use it to disguise my 360 when I'm not using it.

I played it real safe and put away 90% of my stuff when I left my room. I put my desktop in my closet and draped my hamper over it. Put my 360 in my bathroom closet covered in towels. Cash hidden inside a glove in a box full of gloves etc. If you put your mind/ time into something you can come up with some pretty creative stuff. Your average criminal is going to do a quick browse through your room and search the most likely spot things will be found, ie wallet/cash in a desk drawer, jewelry/watches in the top drawer, etc. If you hide things well and leave some stuff that is really not that valuable or things that you wouldn't mind parting with odds are you'll get away with keeping the expensive stuff safe.

damn all of you are around some sketchy ass people, i myself live in a suite which is basically an apartment i share with 3 other people, and i have all my consoles/laptop/tv/ipod stuff all here at the dorm and we keep our main door locked but everything else open always, i have yet to have any incident in anything and i have yet to hear about anybody gettin there shit taken in any dorms in my city nor the one a few miles away

just become friends with the people in your building and i seriously doubt anything will happen, especially if you have your own room then if they get that open then they are going to take everything else you have anyways

just bring it, its some good ole fun and there are worse things that could happen (like you going into a withdrawel from gaming...)

honestly i have time for gaming, but i make sure to keep that in check as i do have about 4-5 hours of homework a day, then a good 2 hours of gaming i'd say, which is an easy balance for me, just make sure you dont get overwhelmed

I'm pretty good with stuff like that anyway. Years of experience of having to hide certain "unmentionables" from the parents .... :p

Abso-freaking-lutely. If I couldn't have played Mass Effect 2, I would have gone crazy. If I couldn't get on Gears of War 2 when I wanted, I couldn't get all that built-up aggression and annoyance out that builds up over the week. Know how to use time well, but definitely bring the games.

The one problem is your TV. A flat screen is preferable, not for the likely HD quality, but because dorm rooms are small, and you'll need the space that a flat screen allows.

If it's your room, and you're the only person in it, I don't see the big deal. If you don't trust people, you lock your door.

Thats a good point, I hadn't thought of that. My TV is a big fat old one. I could probably get a decent flatscreen TV secondhand for less than £100.

Any ideas how I could hide it though? :p

I went to university and took my expensive as hell gaming PC, actually, I had two of them. Never had a problem with people wanting to steal my shit. Of coarse, I also had a rifle in my dorm room.
