I went to university and took my expensive as hell gaming PC, actually, I had two of them. Never had a problem with people wanting to steal my shit. Of coarse, I also had a rifle in my dorm room.
What sort of accomodation where you staying in?

I have been worrying about the same thing. Only I was planning on brining my s3, xbox 360, my snes and my flat screen tv so security is of paramount importance. I know the place i will be staying at has contents insurance up to £3000 but i'd rather not have my stuff nicked.
The way i figure it, your room mates are the ones who are least likely to steal your stuff. Especially if you line your walls with deadly weapons.

Just make sure you lock your room whenever you're not in there if you're worried about someone stealing your stuff (that includes going to the bathroom, taking a shower, etc.) Personally I've never had anything stolen out of my room and I hardly ever lock my door unless I'm leaving the dorm for more than 15 minutes or so. But I'm sure that each college/university is different, and there aren't too many things stolen at the college I attend.

The thing I'd be most concerned with is your level of self control. I know plenty of people that failed several of their classes when they first came to college because they spent all their time playing video games instead of studying. I've managed to get through 4 years with 3 gaming consoles in my room and I've never gotten a C or below, because I've figured out when to play and when to work.

I had a one person room to myself in University so nothing ever got stolen. I'd say it's pretty safe to bring them. Also music won't be a very demanding program so you'll have lots of time to game.

First of all congrats on the good grades :) I don't think I'd have too much trouble with time management, as I'm gonna be studying music, which is like, my whole life. So I'll want to do the work. A slightly off topic question now though. Did you do a timetable or anything to plan out your time? If you did, did it help?

Put it in a metal cage. Lock the door. Go ahead and cut out some of the bars so that you can have access to the CD drive, and just use a laptop lock to tie the console to a piece of furniture.

My 360 hasn't been stolen, but then again, I'm in a girls' dorm...

Really all you need is a copy of starcraft or warcraft 3. The many different game modes online greatly increases the gaming life of those games so they will probably last you atleast a year.

Two person dorm room, we each slept on different sides of the room and had our own little desks and a sink, we shared a community shower with everyone else on our floor and it was down the hall from us.

Honestly, I used to game alot in high school. But once I hit college I rarely gamed at all. There was just alot of stuff for us to do.

In case you were wondering I was at Texas Tech University.

An XBox might be locked in place with a Kensington lock, I know it is definatly possible with a 360

If I can afford to play WoW at uni, Cataclysm will probably keep me busy for a while :p

As far as I know the best console for Unis and dorms is the PS2. It is small, affordable and no one's gonna steal it.

Well, I'm in computer science at the top university for math and engineering in my country. I've put about 90 hours a week into school for the last 5 years, I graduate this summer. By not very demanding I'm judging it by these standards. Maybe music requires 90 hours of work a week, but I doubt it. Though my judgment of music is by my school's shit music program.

Most arts students at my school basically don't do anything, and spending a night writing a 1000 word paper is too much for them.

I am in my third year of university now, my first year was in dorms and my other two have been in a private house where I live with friends.

Like the OP my Xbox was my least valuable thing in my room, but I never had any problems with anything getting stolen. My room had its own lock and each floor had its own lock too so it was as secure as anything could be.

Dorms are designed to be very secure, although no doubt when you get there you will get offered insurance - its not usually much and you may never 'use' it but it would ease your worries so worthy of a buy.

My gaming experiences however also went the way of casual. In the first year only due to money however, but I did manage to get some hardcore gaming sessions in with my friends (co-op gears and halo mostly)
There is a lot of work to do sure, but time can always be found to do what matters most to you, which in your case would be music and gaming.

So my opinion would be take your game console, its always a good ice-breaker for people challenging them to a game and in my experience a) it works really well and b) loads of people have games consoles at uni!

Cool, thanks for your input :) I don't think I'd be able to get away with a rifle in my room in central London though :p

What with all the private practice you have to do, especially if you're a multi instrumentalist and then group rehearsals, it probably does come close to that many hours. But it's okay, I'll let you off with a warning :p

Alright :)
I probably shouldn't have opened my big fat mouth on something I knew so little about lol.

Hopefully you can make it through your program alright :D

This. A lot of people are thieves, and if you have something shiny it's bound to catch the eyes of someone who wants it enough to steal it.
That's my issue though. If someone broke into my room, there'd be 7 or 8 musical instruments just sitting out in the open for them to steal. Even the cheapest one of those is worth only slightly less than a 360 ....
