Well, say that to my english teachers. Gaming is the reason why I've always been better than the other students at english. Also, games like Professor Layton help you with your logical thinking. Therefore, they're quite productive. It's your own fault you only play MW2 and similar braindead games.
I agree with you there, I have plenty of assignments in the past few years which video games have helped me somewhat. One that happend 2yrs ago, I needed to write a "alphabet book" for The Scarlet Letter (a word for each letter about something in the book, and a sentence explaining it) I used words such as zealot, which i learned from WoW, and my teacher complimented me on my word usage. Also i have had to write short stories and i got the idea for a few of them from video games.

I... actually agree with you. And I found your argument that we shouldn't care to run the same line as one of this week's Escapist article debunking myths.

The article pointed out that games are not a social medium. There are some exceptions, but in the end, you're still sitting at home, by yourself, in your underwear (and if you don't game in your underwear/nude, you should try it) or at least off in a corner shutting out others around you.

And so what? Why do we have to push games into a mold of being social for them to seem more legitimate? We don't. There's a lot of non-social activities that people engage in.

So what if gaming isn't really "productive"? Why does everything we do have to have a level of productivity behind it?

This is what I actually believe, though I never admit it unless a conversation brings it out of me.

Hey I love and play games as much as anyone here, I have been playing my PS3 non-stop since I just got it again last wednesday.

But the reason why I consider playing games a waste of time even though I still play them always is because logically they are.

It has been pointed out before, but you don't really get anything out of games that you can use or apply to your life later on. Basically gaming isn't productive, meaning you don't get anything noticeable or useful out of it.

However don't hate me just yet. I'm sure why the reason none of us care about this is because video games are too much damn fun, they are either our primary form of escapism or relaxation activity on our free time.

I work pretty damn long hours sometimes, and it stresses the crap out of me. So when I come home at last, I want to relax! I want to smile! I want to enjoy my measely remaining hours of the day by enjoying myself. That's why I immediately turn on the PS3 or laptop and open up some roms.

Speaking of doing something productive with our time, I have to put time and dedication to that, and I just can't bear to do that when I just need to relax.

If anyone else ever tells you to quit wasting time on games and do something productive, you can easily respond with, "If I spent my whole free time doing something productive, I will never have free time to enjoy myself will I?"

Just wanted to talk about this, I wonder if anyone else thinks this. I know everyone wants to defend gaming as much as possible, but on a personal level doesn't anyone else stop to think about the amount of time they put into games?
So is Milton Bradley's game... That's their purpose. If you just wake up, I'll gladly replug you to the matrix.

So, yeah, it's a time wasting toy. The important thing is not to miss real live event because of it. There's a guy that was flame for it not long ago. He decided to quit and made a video about game becoming a addiction to him. He miss so many thing. He lost so many thing. So, you got to put down the controller. You got to live outside of the gaming world.

I COULD be practicing my instruments all this time instead of playing games, but honestly that feels like work to me.
That's because you haven't found a hobby that you really like. I draw and to me it's as much fun as video games.

Who was it that said that time enjoyed wasting is not wasted? I think it was John Lennon.

Who are you to argue with John Lennon?

Or was it T.S. Eliot?

Not to stray to far from the shadows here and speak for all of us, but in my opinion we can all discuss how games are pointless and have no affect on expanding our minds and are giving us a false sense of acomplishment or we can grab a cola, sit down, and kill some zombies, aliens, etc.

Losen up and have some fun every once in a while ya know, or don't you? All forms of entertainment are simply there to entertain and escape reality. A paradies for us to go to when we feel stressed and want to hang with our frinds. My point is its never a waste of time to have fun and enjoy life.

And with that I am off.

Ever read a book called Momo by Michael Ende? I recommend it, as it has some ideas into what it's a waste of time, what is productive, how to spend time, etc. in a child's book. It isn't science, but I recommend ou read it.

OT: I guess most of us know this already.

You can learn every day skills with games. But it's mainly entertainment, if you're entertained, then they didn't waste your time. If you think it's a waste of time even if you're having fun, then stop. If it's getting in the way of other things you deem more important (practicing instruments) yet that you can't seem to bring yourself to do them otherwise, maybe those things you gotta do aren't that important in the first place and are a waste of time. Or quit gaming. Or whining.

Wasnt the youngest CEO of Starbucks contributing his leadership success to his ability to manage a Guild in World of Warcraft?

Anyone can play a video game and suck at it. I know, I watch my relatives play Mario. To be good at a game though, takes time, practice and meticulous calculations of your errors and liabilities. Hard modes exist for a reason.

"If anyone else ever tells you to quit wasting time on games and do something productive, you can easily respond with, "If I spent my whole free time doing something productive, I will never have free time to enjoy myself will I?"

Blizzard, ICO, Unreal studios, Bethesda, Bioware......All of these companies arent doing anything productive?

"Just wanted to talk about this, I wonder if anyone else thinks this. I know everyone wants to defend gaming as much as possible, but on a personal level doesn't anyone else stop to think about the amount of time they put into games?"

Yes I do personally, and on that note, I think I must go. I think I have a WoW raid in a few minutes.

If you're like me and firmly believe that games are art, then gaming is no more of a waste of time than reading or looking at paintings.

And how exactly is playing an instrument productive? Everything that doesn't actively keep you alive is technically a waste of time. This post, for example, is a waste of time. I don't need to comment. In fact, I am eating dinner while posting. The post is distracting me from doing something productive. Eating.

And just to play Devil's Advocate....

Nothing you do is necessarily a waste of time. Gaming provides entertainment and relaxation (depending on what game it is), and psychologists would probably agree that this helps with mental health.

Back to my food. Ciao!

Yeah, just as much of a waste of time as sports or reading or art. But those have been around forever so you don't hear people complaining about them.

Films? Books? TV? Sports? Even internet?

If gaming is a waste of time then so are those... what else can you do then?

That's what I get out of it at least.

O Yea If it weren't for CoD1, I would know much less about WW2(lie)
