Objectively speaking, it is. That's time you could be using to write a novel or other such "productive activities." Yet, if we only did things that were productive rather than entertaining, we would be a very unhappy society. Gaming is a form of entertainment, as well as books, movies, sports, and TV. All of it could be considered a waste of time, but what are you going to do? Enjoy yourself.

Unture, I remeber I playes AoE 2 on the ps2 and they had quite a bit of history in them. I'm not stretching it when I say it helped me pass my GCSE's especially with the crusade stuff.

Actually for me gaming is productive. Through it since I use a pc to game, I have learned how to do some basic programming for no-cd patches, how to repair, or build a computer and ect. Also thanks to this since I really enjoy doing such things as programming, or repairing a computer, I'm going to Porter & Chester to get a job with computers. So yah, for me it's a productive hobby.

So now enjoying ourselves so that we relieve the stress of our lives to prevent ourselves from blowing our brains out or doing massive amounts of amphetamines is a waste of time? 'Cause for me, it allows me to be relaxed enough that I can continue to do those "productive" things the rest of the time. Therefore, because it allows me to be productive, gaming itself is productive.

If you enjoy gaming, it is not a waste of time. By that logic so is any hobby. The point of any hobby is to have fun. You play games to relax, forget about some of your worries, and have fun.

It is unproductive. A waste of time. But- it's damn fun. By the same definition, the interent, movies, tv and sports are wastes of time. (I refuse to say books, because if you're slightly more retentive than a gawddamn sieve, you might learn some proper grammar from them.)

To OP:

Why would you bother to post a "Gaming is a waste of time" thread on a god damn gaming website? That's like posting a "Movies are a waste of time" thread on a movie website.

It seems as if you want to get a unanimous "YOU'RE WRONG" answer...

Speaking of doing something productive with our time, I COULD be practicing my instruments all this time instead of playing games, but honestly that feels like work to me. I have to put time and dedication to that, and I just can't bear to do that when I just need to relax.
...How exactly is practicing an instrument productive? Unless you are a professional artist who makes a living off of playing music, then practicing an instrument only serves for your enjoyment and isn't productive in the slightest. Waste of time! *burns instruments in fire*

On a more serious note (or at least a less stupid one :p), I disagree with the notion that games aren't productive. But let me clarify; in the majority of cases, they are not productive in the sense that they result in a specific output like work does. What they do instead, however, is reduce stress and increase morale, thus allowing you to perform those output tasks more efficiently. From that standpoint, they are indeed very productive. This is not mentioning some of the other effects it might potentially have (depending on the game), such as broadening your horizons and improving your hand-eye coordination and reaction time.

Basically, my point is that doing something you enjoy is never a waste of time. Even if it just gives you pleasure and makes you a happier and a more spiritually fulfilled individual, that in itself is very productive.

Gaming is strictly unproductive. Nothing is created and its not "useful". Gaming is not a waste of time however. This statement is making the false assumption that productivity is the point of life. If productivity is the point of life then gaming, reading, painting, playing, loving, laughing, emotions of any kind, and any activity that does not create a concrete, tangible, final product is a waste of time.

The truth; life has no point. The closest thing to the "point of life" would be to enjoy it while you got it. In that sense gaming is enjoyable and thoroughly not a waste of time. In that sense building a house is a waste of time if nobody wants or needs a house because the excess houses contribute nothing to the quality of life.

Final verdict: gaming is a thoroughly unproductive, inconsequential, highly enjoyable, valuable, and excellent use of one's free time.

You do make some points, but I would counter that an even bigger waste of time than gaming is talking about why gaming is a waste of time on a gaming forum.

not really.....who do you think makes the games? God? somebody does the thinking and playtesting and animations.the thinking and playtesting can come from playing other games.....also there is always being a professional gamer....it all depends on why your playing games and what you plan your job is to be in life.....

I wouldn't say it's a waste. Gaming is certainly a diversion, something designed to occupy time, but rarely is it wasted. While perhaps not a productive process, it is fun and that's all that matters.

Powerful statement there, buddy. Powerful, but meaningless. The utility of team is ascribed to it by the consumer: if we truly feel something is a waste of "our" time, we won't be engaging in that. Sure, we might feel guilty that we are not being "productive" by the conventional definition by the society we live in, but we do it nevertheless. It might very well be a waste of time, for you, but you truly feel that way.

I don't think it's a waste of time---it's just as wasteful as anything else we do in life.

EDIT: Also, if there were such a thing as Universal Truths, than I'd be really pissed. Because I just spent two weeks, and a colossal amount of money building me my first ever gaming PC.

That depends, if you're really good at a particular game then you can go pro. Once you do that gaming ceases to be a waste of time, and becomes an effective means of making money.

Of course this requires massive dedication, and more often than not, pursuing a career in professional gaming will ruin your life.

If all of that fails, then there's the boring option of being a game tester, while you may not always have fun, it means you're making money, and therefore gaming has just become productive again.

However, I do agree, as a rule gaming doesn't do anything for you (except maybe ruin your eyesight if you play too much), and it is just for fun. I've had only one person tell me that I was wasting time playing video games, two weeks later I got them to try some of the games I had, and they were converted fairly quickly (about a week later they bought a N64, which was the latest console at the time).

There are many things that can be considered a waste of time, gaming, having fun, posting on internet forums. Oh wait.

I think it has more point than most things. isn't having fun accomplishing something? Isn't enjoying life the only real point to it?
