Gaming can;

- Increase your finger dexterity and improve your hand/eye coordination.
No explanation needed I assume.

- Improve your ability of abstract thought and orientation.
Modern big-budget games are usually by far the most complicated 'things' people have to deal with. Get some old guy who never played any games to move around in some 3D game. You will see exactly what I mean. They will be confused as hell because they never had to deal with virtual coordinates.
Don't even get me started on Valve's Portal.

- Inspire you.
You may get interested in making art or pick up computer programming.

I don't get it, why should spending time doing something that you enjoy be time wasted?

I'm a games designer,i wouldn't be very good at my job if i'd never played games would i?

Therefore games = important to me.

And yes i guess gaming is a waste of time, but they can be an entertaining waste of time, until something better comes along :].

1) It depends on the game. Some games are actually training exercises for the military. Some teach you about cars (especially the games that want to be a simulation). Some teach you about account balancing and profits (such as the tycoon games). There are also a plethora of kids games I could easily say are educational. Obviously we know what you mean: hardcore gaming like Call of Duty and Halo and World of Warcraft, etc. But to make a general statement like that when gaming and its interactive nature has limitless potential given that more focus would shift towards education is generalizing.

2) It is productive depending on who you are. Some people use gaming to de-stress or unwind. I wouldn't call that a waste of time.

3) What about spending time with loved ones or friends? Obviously tossing a football around is probably more healthy but have you ever regretted a gaming session with your mates or sitting down to play the Wii with some young family members? I haven't. Ergo = Productive.

4) Even if it IS time 'wasted' then who cares? To say gaming IS a waste of time is an opinion, not a fact. Say what you want but remember it's just your own opinion that is solidified, not the worlds.

Productive things gaming has given me:

1. Better hand-eye coordination
2. Development as an artist
3. Appreciation for immersion and storytelling
4. Release from stress
5. My career (Concept Artist)

Games give you the same things that any form of art or entertainment do. A game may never save someone's life or be the basis for an important invention that will make people's lives easier but that doesn't mean they have no real merits.

Just look at all the real good that Child's Play has done. Try to tell me that 'wasting time' has no merits in and of itself.

Just look at all that time wasting. I see absolutely no merit in this picture.

Gaming is a waste of time just like many other activities that aren't supposed to be productive. Their purpose is to have fun not to contribute to humanity. So in that sense they are a waste of time. But so are movies, music, taking a nap, going to parties etc. You can ditch all that and start working on how to fix the world instead.

Its a waste for some, and for some, its not...

If one has more important things to do then play video games... then yeah, you're wasting time... Especially if you get really far, only to die, and have to start over...

However, if you've got absolutely nothing worth doing... than no, its just like reading a book, watching a movie, or sitting on the toilet... its a learning experience...

The majority of things that people do after work/school can be considered a waste of time.

The OP seems to be of the believe that any activity that isn't productive is a waste, but I would counter with the supposition that maintaining one's psyche is hardly a waste. Maintaining your mental well-being is as important as keeping up your physical well-being - you wouldn't consider a trip to the gym a waste of time, would you? Then why is doing something that you enjoy, that relaxes you, that makes you happy a waste?

As several people have already pointed out, if you're enjoying yourself, you're not wasting time. Time invested to make yourself happier is time well spent. If you game to help relieve the stress of your day, you're investing in your own happiness. I certainly consider that productive.

I know all are arguing about things that are waste of time but first let us make sure that we all assume that life is not a waste of time. If you believe that your life ends when we die, then be it. If life ends at death, then all the things, all experiences - all humanity is a waste of time. You shouldn't be posting on this thread for this reason. Just LIVE and DIE! Enjoy what you can, be merry! Waste all the time for tomorrow we die!

What I'm trying to say is, we should check of how we view life. Life that ends is meaningless, without purpose. "Why did I live if I was gonna die too? Geez. If you believe in the afterlife, then life will be exciting, and with purpose. Life here will be not a waste of time but experience.

If it is now acceptable that life is not a waste of time, let's talk about gaming. I'm a very casual gamer. My religion says it is a waste of time. At first I did not know why, but later I realize I have to do my goals in life, of which are very personal to me. For me now, gaming should have a purpose like entertainment or socialization but also must take part to your goals in life.

You can call me an escapist in the sense that I want to escape the logic of death through belief without even a physical proof.

I don't believe in an afterlife. I don't believe that what we do now isn't real or important or insignificant in the 'grand scheme of things'; what we do now is everything.

Every minute that you live you are dying, so go out and live, and have some fucking fun while you're at it.
