Gaming Mechanic you hate the most!!!!

Well my question is simple... in games, developers tend to do annoying things, from irritating minipuzzles, to cutscenes that teleport us to other places, just has we were grabbing that secret items... or even something in the story that they do, that they think it will better the story up but end up just frustating the player (like QTE on games you didnt even know that had them).

My mechanic is a simple one... i hate when you have to fight against a indestructible boss, just to advance the story, but you cant kill him and you do not know it... this aspect appears more on J-RPG games, and its the thing i hate the most.... first not knowing i cant kill the boss, so i keep wasting all my items to endure the battle, all for a pointless event, that will leave me defeated and itemless...

Nowdays when youre in situations like these, some developers are kind enough to give a smaller hp bar to the enemy, with events that trigger when he reaches a certain point (with cutscenes where they attack the player or show theyre superiority... this way i dont have to continuously fight the same boss and waste a hellload of items).

So tell me escapists... whats the worst mechanic in youre games...

*edit: pardon my grammar... had to edit this once already, but im sure theres many more things mispelled across this post...

Time limits.... I do not work well under pressure. (Note: Turn limits, like in some turn based strategy games, I've had a more changeable relationship with... I'll let them slid...)

Wait, was that the kind of thing you were talking about?

Iron sights.

While they can be a good addition, I feel theres a lot of games that don't do them very well.

Leveling when it's obvious. Like Brink. They kinda shoehorned a leveling system for something that should've been available the first hour of play. It annoys me.

Well I don't really hate QTEs but a game that only uses them occasionally is annoying. You're not looking for a QTE so by the time you see it you're like huh? what? I mean would it be so hard to show a little pop up in the corner that says QTE scene so I'm not eating or drinking or something when a QTE suddenly happens!?

I can go along with that. Games where there is a time limit through out the whole thing (Majora's Mask, Pikmin) piss me off because then it becomes almost a dangerous chore for me. Like when your dad tells you "I'm going to the store. I want this room cleaned by the time I get back." That's pressure enough with the knowledge your bum might become a little more tender if you don't get it done in time. Imagine the fate of an entire civilization on your head. Eeek.

Oh, and escort missions can F&%@$ right off!

exactly... lost planet 2 was the worst with those... i didnt even knew the game had them... you could be on a cutscene nothing happened, but suddently qte... and there were no differences between cutscenes... you had to pay attention and watch them all...

Quick Time Events. And not because of how they work, but because it seems like they're just done wrong.

Actually, I liked how Resident Evil 4 did them, while being in a cutscene, then BAMO HUGE QTE buttons. That I can live with, but its the little ones that are frequent I don't like.

Like QuickTime Hero... errr Guitar Hero which is one big QTE game.

QTE, crappy stealth missions that were cut in @ the last second & loading bars for magic in WOW... mana OR loading bars! not both!

BTW I haven't played it in a long time but I don't care, because last time I checked it's like 300$ a year pay to play.

yeah I was wondering why it seemed like no one noticed that's a QTE, Also QTE in RE4 were perfect, no one else did them right. Well GH & Rock Band obviously, but shut up I'm trying to make a point here!

Time-limits...especially when they don't actually GIVE you the bloody timer!

Probably the biggest pain in the ass is continued spawning for the sake of using one move. You know when you are in a single location and you just KEEP getting hammered until you finally figure out that the game wants you to do X move, Y amount of times.

Then you never need to use that move again...UGH.

I second the Quick Time events, especially if they are not frequent in the game.

I also don't like the hide to heal aspect, at least they way most shooters do it. Where you only have to hide for 10 seconds and suddenly you're fine. It is a realism thing I suppose and I know it's a video game but it takes some challenges out.
I think the best game to have this ah I guess mechanic, to work well was Infamous. It had it, but it didn't take out the difficulty for me because you had to hide for a good long while before you were fine. Plus if I was desperate for healing I would try to find something to suck electricity out.

Though along the sort of lines of that, I also don't like it when you are hurt that the game feels as if it need to emphasize even more that you are hurt. Some blood on the sides are fine along with running slower, but one of the few complaints for me about Infamous was that the screen also turned grey and gridy, and I have a hard enough time seeing as it is even with glasses on, so suddenly I can't tell if something is a box I can get electricity from, or just a box that for some reason is there, or if the person next to me is an enemy that has decided not to shoot that second or a npc who has a hood up.

Well, yes, those kinds of time limits, but I also mean the ones that are not through the entire game... Like, uh, when you have only 5 minutes to get from point a to point b. You know the ones that only appear at fixed points in the game... those are pretty annoying too...

Well, those I can handle as long as they have some kind of relevance to the situation AND if they're consistent. I noticed Mass Effect 2 did that. There was a side mission where you had only 3 minutes to get teh f*** out of the place, but I did another "escape the facility" mission later in the game and there wasn't a time limit. Consistency people.

QTE's, I think they're fucking lazy.
Regenerating health, though it works in SOME situations, I hate now it's crammed into just about everything. Once again, because I think it's lazy.

I don't much care for time limits. They tend to cause me to rush to get the objective done, and therefore make mistakes whilst performing. This, in turn, causes me to either die or not complete the mission very well, depending on the given game that I am playing.

I don't like being rushed.

I remembered a new one... constant point A to point B travelling.... like in prototype... they sure gave you good powers... unfortenatly to make the game longer they made you use them constantly to travel looooooooong distances across the whole city....

goddam, way to break the atmosphere...

Rechargeable shields and/or regenerating health, nothing drives me crazy like having an enemy that's almost run away and come back with full health. With every game having it these days, it starts feeling like less of a feature and more of a delaying tactic to make the game longer.

QTE's getting a lot of hate. They can be done right if you initiate them and they explain how to do this and what you are expected to do. They CAN be done right. When they are done wrong is annoying.

Preferential targeting. Games that lack a good threat determination engine always seem to have any enemies target the player if he exposes any part of his body when there are allies around standing in the open shooting. Many shooters suffer from this. It's not so much a mechanic as an oversight, but it's worthy of a complaint.
