Hey y'all. With my birthday rapidly approaching, I've been looking into some gifts to buy myself, and I couldn't think of a worthier investment than a new keyboard and mouse, built for the kind of stuff I spend all my time doing.

I don't really know a ton about how this kind of stuff works, though, so I came here to ask around. The two keyboards I knew were pretty awesome are the Logitech G15 [http://www.logitech.com/en-us/keyboards/keyboard/devices/3498] and the Logitech G19 [http://www.logitech.com/en-us/keyboards/keyboard/devices/4956]. (And the Optimus Maximus, but that's a bit out of my price range.)

Those are my two most basic choices, though, I'm sure, and I'll still need a fancy mouse to use as well. What do you guys recommend, my good Escapist friends?

As for the mouse, I can recommend Logitech's G9x. It's got a lot of great features like on-board mouse profiles, adjustable dpi on the top, 2 grips and weights. It's a little pricey at $100, but you can probably find it on sale somewhere (I got mine for around $50. If that's too much, check out Razer's mice. I've heard they're good (Though I've only ever used the Lachesis).

For the keyboard, I'm using Microsoft's sidewinder keyboard. It's good 12-42 macro keys depends on the settings, which is nice if you like that sort of thing. I got it for $60.

EDIT: You can get the G9x from amazon for $47 after a rebate.

Gaming mice depend on how you place your hand.

When I was looking for a new mouse, I tried my brother's G9 and found it horrible because I couldn't get a good grip on it. I bought a G500 and it fits perfectly in my hand because it's a bit larger.

I use a Logitech g500 mouse and a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 keyboard. Have had no problems with either.

Depends on the game you're playing. Trackballs work very well for games like Unreal Tournament, not so well for Quake 3 because of how it uses right click, the one I've got is completely horrible for Diablo. It works out well for me since UT is one of my all time favourite games. I'd recommend looking in to it, with FPS games accuracy really goes up with a trackball.

See if you can try a couple of mice to get an idea of a comfortable fit. I have the microsoft sidewinder wireless one, I find it really comfortable but a lot of people hate it because of it's enormous size (I don't have big hands). I have a G15, I only bought it because I wanted to monitor my OC temps om my CPU and GPU. I have no other use for the screen. Gaming information should be on your monitor.

I have the Logitech G9 mouse, it's great. The G9x is the same thing with a better laser, so I'm sure it's good too.

For a keyboard I have the G11 which was cancelled. So I dunno what to recommend you for that. G19 looks really awesome and Logitech's Drivers aren't usually a pain in the ass.

I got the G19 about 2 months ago and HOLY SHIT it's awesome. I mean it's got a tiny screen in it! Nothing can compare to that! IN all seriousness though it is definitely the pick of the lot. Sure it's expensive, but if you will use it then go all out! As for a mouse, stick with Razer.

I enjoy the fine works of Razer myself. I've been using products by them for the past several years now and I must say I am a happy customer.

That and I can't help but laugh every time some one tries to use my mouse. 1800 DPI doesn't feel like anything special until you see some one else struggling to click on something because of it. xD!

I personally enjoy a Razer Lachesis mouse (very comfortable and 4000 dpi) and a Razer Tarantula Keyboard.

The mouse has 4 extra buttons on it which I find uses for in all games and my keyboard has 10 extra keys, 5 on either side of the keyboard which when playing an MMO and leading a group (im a tank so I find myself in this position regularly) allows you to mark targets a lot faster.

Whatever you do, dont buy wireless mouse.. They are in my opinion utter shait..

At least the 3 different kinds i have tried.. They dont react as fast and properly as a normal mouse with a cord..

it really depends on what you are going for setup wise. I use a razer naga and am getting the g19 but thats my preference. I say set a price budget and stick to it.

For keyboards, I have the Logitech G15 and can say that it is beyond awesome.

As for a mouse, I have the Logitech G500, which is awesome as well.

Those are my suggestions.

Buy a mechanical keyboard if you're in the market for a dedicated gaming keyboard [http://www.overclock.net/computer-peripherals/491752-mechanical-keyboard-guide.html]. They're made from far-superior materials to standard rubber-dome technology - mass-market technology not designed to last very long. If you're lucky, you won't need to buy a keyboard for the next twenty years.
Nice guide, quite useful for gaming, although I'm a bit disappointed in the relative lack of ergonomic designs - among the affordable ones it's mostly just split keyboards.
