Ever torture yourself by playing through a game or section or whatever that you absolutely don't enjoy just so you can get that one trophy or achievement or simply for bragging rights?

I'm been doing it almost since I started gaming at 6 years old. Notable occurrences are:
- Getting Big Boss (or equivalent) ranking in every Metal Gear Solid game
- 100% completion. Including FFXII, FFX-2, GTA:SA and many others
- 25 Kill-Streak in COD4. I suck at online multiplayer, so this was one heck of a challenge for me
- Finish Super Mario Bros from start to finish and frying 2 NES consoles in the process. Mostly due to World 7-4. Fuck that level!

Lots of others I can't think of.

Playing dead space on hard. I've said this before. I'm on chapter 7 and it's too late to turn back.

I have to say no, I am a big fan of "If it's not fun, then don't play it" I just put the game down, and come back later. :) (Maybe after doing some research)

EDIT: Although I cant bring myself to come back to try R-TYPE without loosing a life.

Playing TMNT through just for the 1000/1000. The game isnt exactly bad, its just so boring and bland that by the end of it I felt ill.

Also doing all the Extreme tracks on Trials HD was pretty tough. I raged a few times with that one.

God, trophies have made me do things I would have never even considered before. Beating World at War on Veteran is probably the most difficult thing I've done in order to get a trophy; another notable occurence which wasn't necessarily difficult but so incredibly time consuming was getting GTA IV's platinum - those multiplayer trophies are brutal.

I'm also one of those people who just needs to get 100% completion on a game when the opportunity is given to me - I've managed to do that on every single major Grand Theft Auto title from 3 up to....4?; hm, that sounded better in my head.

I've tortured myself for 100% completion a few times. The ones that come to mind are <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.130703>Xchange (turns out, the last two endings I got were the only worthwhile things about the game) and <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.148564>Little My Maid (which was okay-to-decent until those last four endings).

There have been other, minor examples. I might try the "Kick Me Challenge" in God Hand one of these days (finish the game without using Roulette attacks or the God Hand). On Easy mode, of course; I'm masochistic, not insane.

- COD 4 / WaW on Veteran. Hated every second of it. But I finished.
- Mass Effect, Bioshock. Not really torture. But I forced myself to play those 2 game through till the end, just so I could see what the fuss was all about. I still don't get it.
- Many old school classics (Contra, R-type and it's clones)
- I pretty much mastered King of Fighters, even though I'm not a fan of the franchise. I did it to beat my friend that wouldn't shut up about how awesome he was at it.

I kinda tortured myself in Assassin Creed the first. Had to do one of those kill people stealth style. I kept getting caught and by time I had actually finished the quest I had killed about 90 guards. Was a fairly large pile.

I tortured myself with World of Warcraft as well. Being an achievement whore can be painful.

Anyone remember 007 Everything or Nothing back in the Gamecube/PS2 days? Well there was a co-op mode. Two players. If you set off an alarm, you lost points. If you were seen, you lost points. If you fired an unsilenced weapon, you lost points. If you weren't in the right place at the exact second every patrol was where it needed to be, you lost points.

Me and a friend spent two months. We memorized every single guard position, movement pattern, every move we had to do to get 100% on every single mission. Picture having to restart a mission 100 times within the first ten seconds because you entered a split second too early the roll you need to perform to cross the distance to come up standing to target the guard for a one shot silence kill to the back of the head, rendered useless because his position in relation to you meant you had to take a half second to adjust your aim, which was half a second he was aware of your presence, which was half a second during which time he sounded the alarm, cutting your score in half.

We fucking lived for that shit.
Dude..... Duuuuude!

If it isn't fun or is not likely to be over soon then I don't play. And personally, I tend to take achievement systems as artificial ways of extending game/campaign life and don't bother with them. Any achievements I have on Xbox account, or in WoW (as examples) will have been incidental to play and not sought after.

I've discovered I have a compulsion to have the high score on any song I play in Audiosurf, so if beating the current high score is even remotely feasible without playing the ridiculous modes I'm no good at, I will keep doing it over and over and over again until I win. Even though the point of the game is really to just give you something fun to do while you listen to your music.

I've only had the game for 8 days but I've already got the global high score on 257 songs. This is probably unhealthy somehow.

Edit: 258 now, posting about this made me compelled to fire the game back up and try my 'white whale', the song I could never ever seem to get all the way through on Mono without hitting a grey block somewhere. Complete success! A winner is me.

Ahem

Unlocking the Ultima-Weapons in FFX to their full potential. I couldn't be bothered after looking up what the hell I had to do. But it was bloody ridiculous.
