Furburt ninja'd me to about everything I was going to say.

though he did leave out that "All gamers listen to metal"

No we don't.

Only about 99% do.
Really? O_O only 25% of my gaming friends are fellow metal heads.

While I agree that not all of the stereotypes are true, I'm less interested with disproving them than with asking the obvious question of why some of them negative to begin with.

What's wrong with liking anime/Final Fantasy/hardcore metal/etc? Everyone's tastes are different, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things.
What's wrong with drawing fanart or writing fanfiction? Creativity is cool, and it's awesome that there are games and characters that inspire people to want to see more of the world or imagine and extrapolate character interaction in new ways.
What's wrong with being a little more shy than the average person? Yeah, it can sometimes be a bit hard to deal with, but as long as you have at least a few people behind you and are happy with yourself in your own skin, it's still fine.
What's wrong with not liking exercise, or enjoying chips a bit too much? I will admit that health issues exist and make this a bit of a grey area, but again, if they're happy, what's wrong with that? It's not like extra pounds suddenly makes a person stupid, or unkind, or unworthy of friendship or love.
What's wrong with not having a girlfriend or boyfriend? Plenty of people are very happy being single, ya know. :)

Yeah, there are obviously gamers who don't fit in with those stereotypes. There are also those that do. The important thing is that BOTH groups are fine. Vive la difference and all that. I don't care if you're a fat, pimpled, glass-wearing nerd living in your parent's basement which is wallpapered with anime fanart... if you're a good person, you're still well worth knowing. ^_^

We do not all wear glasses. Granted, a lot of us do, but it's by no means a universal thing.

Also, we don't all wear shirts tucked into our trousers, have braces, and have cropped hair.

Hell, people have a hard time believing I'm a gamer, I look like a stoner!
I agree with you I look like a stoner, although I do wear glasses

We're not isolated psychopaths who've finally found an outlet to practice shooting people so we can do it in real life at some high school.

We're not excessively violent people who are now so violent from all the violent and gore-tastic video games that we're secretly planning to kill everyone.

We're not all losers who don't have a girl friend and are socially awkward so we spend all our time playing video games.

Gaming wise:

"Sniping is more than point-and-click!"

No.

Out of gaming:

Playing WoW doesn't mean you don't have a life.

That videogames are for kids. My parents drive me nuts with that one. I tell them the stat about the average age off a gamer being somewhere in the thirties, but it does not sway them.
Mostly this. Also the one about video games turning everyone into cold-hearted killers. Although I doubt there's anything I can say here that other people haven't already said - almost all of us seem to object to almost all of the stereotypes.

Girls don't game or want to game. This is also a generalization the gaming companies themselves make.

Case in point, that giant ass controller for the first Xbox. I could not hold that thing in my girlie hands.

It did make a thwack when you threw it though.
I agree. Bad stereotype to have. Although I personally love the first Xbox controller. I am a rather large man and finally had a controller that didn't feel too small for me.

I hate it that people think that playing games is wasting my life. It's my fucking life. I do what I want to do in my spare time for enjoyment. That is the whole damn point of life.

Gamers wear glasses (I do but what the hell people, It's like calling someone with no lungs a looser for using mechanical lungs to you know breathe..seriously though my glasses add more to my collage image of a cynical critic who enjoys bringing everyone from their high horse when they don't deserve to be on that pony).
Gamers have Acne (Another dumb one considering no matter who you are, you'll get Acne at one point in your life)
Gamers are horrid at sports (I'm actually quite good at Lacrosse, and Hockey (Field, Street, and Ice).

Yeah, this too. Especially since some of the same people who say this to me Tivo everything under the sun and talk about how they don't have enough time to watch whatever it is they are Tivoing.

Hell, even I had trouble holding that behemoth of a controller. You could mine the planet with that thing.
Too right! Maybe they were trying to design a superior weapon in case of a physical confrontation between PS2 owners and Xbox owners.

If so, that would be uncannily prescient on their part to predict the animosity between the two camps.
lol! I guess Nintendo decided to one-up them both with a friggin NUNCHUCK!

As to stereotypes - as a gamer, I'm not fat, ugly, bad at sports, antisocial, covered in zits, smelly, or a virgin. Nor am I violent. I might be perverted but that's free porn's doing not games. Actually, I find it a bit creepy how overly hyper sexy some gaming characters are... I do not want my mind wander when I'm trying to concentrate, damnit!
that is because of the Popularisation of the gaming industry, we are all part of the new widespread generation of gamers that came to be.

Gamers are 14 years old with ridiculous acne that have no lives and will spend the rest of their lives in their parent's basement eating Cheetos.

NO. This is generalizing. That is bad.
I know, I'm 20 next month (Prepare my cake!) and I hate Cheetos. Oh, and I have my own house now. XD

I've been a gamer since I was 10. I do not or have ever had a squeaky high voice, spouting out racial slurs and curse words.

I am not more dangerous than a gang of bikers.
I think we want that stereotype, though.
We dont want that stereotype because that means that videogames are bad, mmkay?

Seriously, if they think that gamers are more dangerous than bikers they will most likely stop allowing people to be gamers.
How about...we're more dangerous and responsible than a responsible gang of bikers? Like, we are the most civilized bastion of society, but don't bully us.

Either that all gamers are teenage boys; My sister is a gamer, my Grandad is a gamer.

Or that all WoW-players are socially-defunct loners.
