Halo was originally a real time strategy game.

Suck on that fanboys.
I think I heard somewhere that they originally planned it as a pc exclusive third person shooter. Maybe it had a colourful development history before it became the fps we all know and love.

My friend says that he once discovered this unique gun in Fallout 3 on pc by using the command console and typing in random codes. He forgot the code and to this day no website has shown it.

Oh and...this

Now there are somethings you know about games without even playing them.
For example every gamer EVERY PERSON EVER knows that the cake is a lie.
So what are some things that are relatively unknown?
My example, I've heard stories of how great deus ex is, but I've never heard a word of the plot or any spoilers ever. It's like it's so good, that there is an unspoken code that you don't ruin it for everyone else.
No, everyone knows that the cake WASN'T a lie, didn't you even see the end?

Vagrant story on ps1: a jrpg so awesome that it can enthrall even the most ardent of jrpg haters, and make them worshippers of the long haired androgynous form.
That was an absolutely awesome game, I think this wins.

I don't know if this counts but i've never known anyone else who knows about his. In the alliance pvp shop in stormwind some of the characters are named after stargate sg-1 characters. For example: One of the npcs is bald and called General Hammon.

Eh Chromehounds was a well kep secret for the xbox 360 haha. The servers were only taken down in january but about 6 months after it was released a few years ago it was like no one had heard of it. Best game I ever played on my 360.
Chromehounds was AWESOME! :D

Real underappreciated gem, one of the best mech-based games ever - if not THE best.
Wow. This game is getting some good thread time. I love mech games, but never really got around to getting this one. Wanted it for the longest time, but just never got it. I think I'll pick it up. Especially since by now its probably $20.

Actually, it was originally unveiled at Mac World. It was going to be a Mac-only game. Imagine the world we would be living in right now if that happened!

Never turn your back to a window in Resident Evil. EVER.

Wait....the cake is a what? Cake can not be a lie...it's a edible substance. I demand to know who or what stats it is a lie!
Because everyone knows the best cakes always hide a hooker, man-eating clown, or a crowd of angry gerbils inside of it. Or the frosting is never as good as it looks.

Well Nintendo kept what the sign says a secret, from what I've read it hints at Luigi being unlockable for Mario 64 and it's a huge internet conspiracy.

I can't verify it myself, but there's this room in some Nintendo game...

It's a secret to everybody.
You've gotten quoted quite a bit but...

NO DON'T TELL ANYBODY ABOUT THAT ROOM! ONLy every one who ever played that game ever knows about it!

I enjoyed the rupee bribe to keep it a secret though, always helped me get the shield.

Well, how about "Blood Wings: Pumpkinheads Revenge"? The Spoony One had to scour the damn internet to find even a boxed copy of the game, let alone what he had to do to finish it, as the internet forgot it. I know, the internet forgot about something horrible. It's astonishing.

firstly d/l modio (the latest version) and mod your xbox save of the orange box , then when you play through portal on room 19 the final room you activate god mode and the ability to fly i can make a walktrhough for you if you want, and you fly into a room and it keeps saying the cake is a lie...

also my personal fave secret in gaming is...on halo 3 on the mission the storm you can jump on the wall and get out of the map, if you stay up there long enough you get to the recon gate, jump through it and the scarab tank on the ground just falls through the ground ... or it did while my halo was unpatched, now it just stays there and flys up a little

The single greatest gaming mystery is the legendary "STOP N SWOP" of Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie fame, of course.

Literally NOBODY could figure out what it meant, and it remains a great secret to this day...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjo-Kazooie_(series)#Stop_.27N.27_Swop
TL;DR
It was an in-game secret that wasn't fully implemented due to complications in the wiring of the N64. The earlier consoles gave you about ten seconds to turn the console off and swap cartridges while the memory from the former cartridge was still retained(stop n' swap) while the newer models gave you about a second.

That Bungie originally wanted halo to be like half life
Wrong. It was an RTS, then a more open TPS, then an FPS. Get your facts right. I think the biggest secret the pronunciation of W'rkncacnter, S'pht'kr (from Lh'owon), Y'gar 'Pewtrunoee (a Sangheili) and Dr'Ate'R. Seriously, how the HELL do you say any of those?
We don't. We just go along for the ride, don't ask questions, and shoot the funny names. And remark overused one liners in which relate to military objectives and tactics, of course. Along with racial remarks.

And frag blast vent cores. Don't forget that.
*Cough*

Oh, of course. Halo's guide to sabotaging your old, crash landed ship to kill the zombie Flood Apocalypse. Indeed.
