Man, back on the N64, on the original Super Smash Bros, my friend kept referring to Samus as 'him'. No matter how often I corrected him. He also referred to Jigglypuff as her.
Jigglypuff is a race, is it not? In which case it could be either male or female. Not like it's possible to check after all, and they gotta procreate somehow.

And thankfully there are no 'traps' in any games I've played, not that I know of anyway. Closest I can think of is in Baldur's Gate 2 where...
It's possible for Edwin to screw up a spell with zany gender-bending results, resulting in 'Edwina' who hilariously makes a cameo in Dragon Age as well as Mass Effect.

Pyro. Here I am expecting some good ol manliness under that mask and its a chick. Which okay still works for me but still!
I'm all but certain even valve haven't decided on the gender of the pyro yet. They just put in some stuff because they enjoy seeing the forums explode with wild speculation.
... You failed "Sense of humour 101" huh?
Where was the humor? All I saw was repetition of old invalid speculation that may be retarded, but not funny.

Well, the first one (Samus), has already been covered, so I'll go with the second one. Behold!

Yeah. Male. Okay, so maybe it's not a "trap" (since I can't imagine anyone being attracted to Birdo), but it's certainly a "trick" at the very least!

Really puts all the pinups of him on the Yoshi Circuit in Mario Kart: Double Dash into perspective, huh?

[Insert any random character from Final Fantasy (the later games)]
Not eve close. Kuja perhaps, but the rest of them are pretty obviously male. Not the most rugged males, but still.

But really, look at the concept art for the old games and tell me the new games have androgynous characters. You only think so because the graphics weren't good enough back then to properly recreate how the characters were supposed to look.

I don't think Pyramid Head HAS a gender, what with being an eldritch abomination from the dark deaths of the human subconscious and a manifestation of rampant male sexuality...

I feel like that makes him male, for all intents and purposes.

Wait, would manifestation of rampant male sexuality be male or female?

I think the fact that he has a penis makes him very much a male.

Dang it..I was going to say Bridget x-x...

Umm...ok how about this? Loran Cehack from Turn-A Gundam, and who also appears in the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games...

looks like it could be either or from that image...but what really confused me was his unlockable costume after you beat his story..

I went all the way through the first one thinking it was a woman...and about a few hours of the second game.

Not necessarily. There is more to being a male then having a superpowerful Animus.

Probably doesn't count, but in my old guild in MapleStory, we had a conversation like this:

Guy: Hey, is [name] a girl? ([name] plays a female character.)
Me: Yeah, why?
Guy: ****! I was totally diggin' her last night too!
Entire guild: *laughter*

So yeah, [name] was the best trap in our guild.

For a more on-topic post, half of the Final Fantasy cast. Geez, they're really up on their estrogen injections or something.

The one for me, technically not a "trap" but still even though the roles are reversed a bit, is Yoruichi from Bleach

Sounds like a male cat, turns out to be a female human, bit of a mind fuck I guess
