Gay Gamer Turns Down EA

A gay gamer who submitted a photo of himself with a "booth dude" to EA's "Sin to Win" contest at Comic-Con [http://www.comic-con.org/] got a bit of a surprise when he was selected as a runner-up winner.

The "Sin to Win" contest in support of Dante's Inferno LGBT [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93429-EA-Apologize-for-Sin-to-Win-Wording] demographic. So he decided to take action.

"I sent in my photo of me with a burly man that I took at PAX [http://www.paxsite.com/] last year as a humorous portrayal of how [the] contest is not only misogynistic and demeaning to the women that attended the conventions, but also to anyone that doesn't follow the hetero-normative ideal," he wrote. "I know booth babes (and guys) get paid to man those booths and deal with gawkers, but there are also PR, production, and development people at those booths caught in the crossfire of dealing with people trying to do 'acts of lust' with them to win your contest."

But his fun, light-hearted approach took a turn for the interesting when EA Store [http://gaygamer.net/2009/07/update_runnerup_for_lust_conte.html] gift card. Staying true to his principles, he sent a polite email to EA declining the prize and requesting they put the money toward other, more worthy causes. He also expressed hope that his selection wasn't entirely random at all and that EA is actually trying to appeal to a broader audience.

I wouldn't be terribly shocked if that's the case and even if not, the fact that EA didn't reject the entry outright casts the company in a positive light. The contest itself most certainly didn't, but this can at least be seen as a little bit of good coming out of a really bad idea.

So EA's contest is so popular that they had to select pictures from PAX 2008 as runner ups?

That's actually really really funny. I wonder if it was a matter of EA subverting his protest, or if they genuinely found it funny and original enough to place him as runner-up.

Completely at random, yes.

I feel bad for EA; can't catch a break lately. A lot of people hate on them for whoring out the same franchises, but they're a few years behind the times when you look at how many new IPs EA has launched in the last few years as well as having completely re-imagined Burnout and making huge inroads on the Wii and advancements in Madden and some other sports games.

Hah, talk about a slap in the face to EA. I bet they weren't too happy about that.

For some reason I can tell that EA aren't gonna use that declined money for something 'worthy'
They're probably gonna use it on a new sports game

It isn't declined money... its a gift token worth precisely zero dollars to EA... just means they arent giving away 240 dollars of free shit.

wow, this would be a literal take on "sin-to-win". sad to hear that he turned it down, even if he wasn't gay you know this would be a good picture.
That's what I would've done, send EA a home mad porno.

Bless EA. They really have been catching it quite bad recently, despite being one of the best developers recently.

I'm glad this story came out because it helps make up for the sin to win controversy. Kind of.

Lol gay gamer.
Very substantial contribution.

I guess this is sort of a good thing. At first I thought it was just gonna be a story about how EA rejected a gay guy's entry.

I thought the brass knuckles thing a while back was cool. It just sucked that they didnt know all the intricacies of the law for that one. This contest could have just used better wording or even better! They could have just opened it up to any of the deadly sins. That would have led to some really funny situations at Comic Con.

Still, if there weren't enough pictures from Comic-Con to give prizes to and they had to pick ones from last year's PAX I'd still say that they screwed up with the contest in general.

"...the hetero-normative ideal," he wrote.

AKA one is either gay, or a 1984 citizen who worships the Thought Police. Don't these people read what they write?

Say what you will about EA, Pax, or whatever, but I think you're all missing the point...

This guy was trying to prove that EA's contest was sexist and promoted the degradation of women....and his 'gay' pic won! So whether EA feels slighted that he turned the money, the fact is this dude's "plan" to shame EA totally backfired.

He can't complain that EA is a homophobic company when he won unexpectedly. That totally threw his hypothesis out the window and I say he got 'pwnd' in his own way.

That story is quite amusing, if a little pretentious with the whole "EA doesn't like gay people" idea the guy seemed to have.

Wait, isn't he discriminating against lesbians? Awesome.
