Gears 2 Writer: "The Lancer Is The New Lightsaber"

Gears of War isn't going anywhere. With a "ten-year plan" in place and major hints at a prequel game and single-player DLC for Gears of War 2, series scriptwriter Joshua Ortega thinks "the lancer is the new lightsaber."

Seems that Halo [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.86497] isn't the only Xbox-friendly franchise with aspirations to the pop culture throne currently occupied by Star Wars. Epic has well, epic, plans for the franchise going forward in the next ten years, including a movie, a prequel game, new DLC for Gears 2 and more.

Asked by fans at the recent New York Comic Con if Epic had any intention of making a prequel game that detailed the beginning of the Human-Locust war, Joshua Ortega, the scriptwriter on Gears 2, implied that something was coming...in the next decade. "You will not be disappointed in the next ten years," Ortega said. "It's a ten-year plan. Gears is long-term. The lancer is the new lightsaber."

Somehow I can't see gigantic machine guns with chainsaws being as iconic as laser swords, but I suppose that's a matter of your taste in phallic symbols. In any case, a decade of Gears certainly isn't hard to imagine. Beyond the two games already out, the inevitable sequel and the now potential prequel, there are plans for a comic book and, moreover, a movie, which may or may not become a Len Wiseman [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88942-Gears-of-War-Movie-A-Harder-Lord-of-the-Rings] has his way.

Regarding the near future, however, fans pressed Ortega on the possibility of single-player DLC for Gears 2, which has had plenty of multiplayer love content-wise but nothing added to its campaign. Like what seems like other [http://fallout.bethsoft.com/index.html] blockbuster game in 2008, the Gears 2 ending was not exactly conclusive or satisfying - could we be due for another DLC pack that adds "the real ending?"

"Keep watching," Ortega answered. "You won't be disappointed."

That's a pretty bold statement, one I already don't see them living up to, and won't see them living up to in the next 10 years... Just my opinion though... Gears never did it for me. Played through em both, and yeah, really not my thing.

So there's someone else at Epic who is almost as egomaniacal as Cliffy B.

In other news, Police today found the drowned body of Joshua Ortega in his home.
A statement has yet to be issued but it appears the videogame script writer stuck his head so far up his own arse that it entered his small intestine.

Epic failiure of a statement. Gears is pretty cool, but to even think of trying to rival Star Wars, thats what I call folly. I guess it's good to know for Xbox owners that there are another 10 years of Gears. Maybe they will sort out the multiplayer by the end of that period. :)

First there's the comment about Halo being the next Star Wars, and now this. It's nice to know that all of these IPs that are nothing like Star Wars are striving to obtain the same glory...but...uhh...I have nothing else to say. It's just stupid.

I couldn't agree more. If Gears dethrones Star Wars I will admit Star Wars is geeky, and light all my video games on fire.

Likewise for me Frank, takes a big pair to claim a gun with a chainsaw on the end of it is the new lightsaber.

Yeah no, not even in the slightest. It's one thing to say that something is going to be the next Star Wars. It's something else entirely to say that something is going to be the next lightsaber.

While the lancer may be cool, it just isn't the thing people imagine when they pick up a stick, and I doubt that it ever will be.

The Police are becoming a little more subtle in their brutality?

Bottom line people: should I invest my hard earned (hah, yeah right) cash into the Gears of War series?

I never did get round to buying it, and people seem to be talking about it all the time, which is increasingly making me wonder if I'm missing out on a truly amazing gaming series.

As for the ten year plan thing, even if I was a fan of the series it would annoy me that they are trying to milk it to death.
