Epic Games forums are ablaze with people saying that they can't play the game, and it is asking the game to be reinstalled, and this is because the digital Certificate for it, ran out on January 28th.

This annoys me, because I got the game not so long ago and now I can't complete. I'm on Act 5! 5! That is so close to completing the game and now the plug has been pulled! There are sooooo many ways Developers and Publishers want to get over Piracy, and this is one of the most idiotic reasons ever. This even beats the infamous EA DRM. I will hate Epic games until they get this fixed. Maybe they are trying to get me to buy an Xbox 360 so I can complete the game, and that is one thing I am NOT doing.

What are your views on this story? Do you hate Epic games, or do you not care?

There is a news article on the matter if anyone wonders what Catkid is talking about.

When you buy a game, it should work out of the box. That is my view. EVERYONE who bought this should be entitled a full refund.

To be honest, I don't really care. I've tried the game on PC and it plays much better on the 360. The over the shoulder view just doesn't really work with a mouse and keyboard. If you are against buying it for the 360, or even buying a 360, then don't. We're not going to be mad at you. All that I will say is that it was originally for the 360, plays better on it, and looks like thats the only way you will finish the game.

Well, I'll just say I'm glad I didn't buy it on PC. Although, that was mostly because my old PC wouldn't run it. There would be a good chance I would buy it now... if it wasn't so screwy.

I used to like Epic, but now with this... they let me down. Fortunately i returned my PC copy of GoW almost a year ago after doing the first chapter. i claimed that it was a faulty disc. that's why it was so glitchy... but now my only hope of finishing it is if i borrow a friends 360.

Also, thanks to this, i can now look a little bit better upon EA. only a little bit, mind.

Why? Why would they do this? I can't think of any reason other then to completely piss their customers off... Oh well, as long as they get it fixed soon.

The control scheme for the keyboard is actually pretty good, if you give it a try. Just saying.

What a mess, I can't believe a digital certificate with a 2009 expiration date got past Epic's QA. Granted, it's not something that is usually noticed, but where the PC's concerned, Epic seems to be stumbling in places it used to trot.

hmmm.. this could have been a big problem. If it wouldn't be for pirated software. Which would skip the whole damn checking.

Anyways, my own gears of war doesn't want to install om my D: drive, and even if I let the damn thing clutter up my C:, at the end, it's missing some DLL and to view a help file (seriously, point, shoot, take cover, repeat. I need a help file for that?), figures I'm soooo into the help file that without it, I don't want GoW on my pc so continues to uninstall.

Ironic notion: UT3 works like a charm.

Am I the only one who saw this and thought, "Oh, they made a mistake and they're fixing it." As others have pointed out, it's not as if QA often thinks to check expiration dates on Microsoft Certificates, and the Kotaku article says that if you need it to work *right now* and can't wait for a new cert, you can change your system date and have it working again in the interim.

I mean, yeah, it's hilarious and all, but I don't think a mistake that is, frankly, a shared fuck up of both Epic and Microsoft, means that all Epic cares about is console gamer money now.

Why the fuck does a game need a digital Certificate anyway? What are Epic gonna do? Patch it to 2010 and let the game expire 1 year from now?

Why do people ***** about GoW PC being bad when it comes to control. It works like any other shooter game on the friggen PC!! the keyboard controls are no differnt from counter strike or Call of duty. I absolutely hated the controller, and people who think it belongs on consoles only are being rather ignorant. Aside from the annoying freeze up whn loading in single player the gamje runs fine with no real problems that I have encountered.

Ireally hope they fix this problem soon since I got pissed off after trying to reinstall the game twice without luck. The clock rollback didn't help either.

The most ironic thing:

The harder the company works on pirate prevention the more motivated the people are to pirate. Remember that blu-ray executive who boasted that blu-ray couldn't be hacked? That was a challenge to the community and before 24 hours was up there was copies of serenity in all it's HD glory. This happens to every game that comes out, the more stronger the anti-piracy protection the more it becomes a challenge to those who love to break this protection. Many might not even pirate the game, but they do think up ways to undo all that hard and annoying work you put into stopping them.

There are games out there with NO pirate protection on them what so ever and they make just as much, sometimes more, money then those who try and prevent piracy as in the end the issue doesn't matter: your game is going to be pirated, accept it and move your efforts into making better games. Maybe these companies, the ones who don't protect heavily, are smart enough to realise all the over the top protection does is one thing: Irritate the legal consumers. Many may even be compelled to go out and get the pirate copy of these games for the sole reason they won't have to deal with over the top protection any more. I've done that more then once myself in the past.

Many of these consumers then do what this guy is doing: Complain loudly on gaming forums. The result is less customers who veer away from all the hassle your anti-pirate measures are causing.

Smart move there executives, smart bloody move.
