Geeks, are you athletes too?

Hi, my name is Jernau and I'm a long time lurker...but something today made me want to start a thread.

You see, I am like many of the people here on the escapist a massive geek, and unashamedly so at least to my friends but on the other hand I am also an aspiring athlete. I hope to make the under 23 squad for Team GB rowing by next year and I will be going to the trials during the winter season. If anyone knows about rowing is not easy it requires a lot of dedication and hard work and exercise. Now it got me thinking that almost all of the athletes that I know and how really...none of them are huge unrepentant nerds like me either.

So, am I a freak doing something which would normally be considered the antithesis of being a "Geek" or are there other people out there who do competitive sport as well as being enamored with MTG, WoW and FFXIII. And even if you don't do competitive sport are there any other times where you just sit down and think, i swear that these two things just don't mix!

I'm not good at any "important" sports, but I am good at weird sports like badminton.

While I wouldn't say I'm a massive athlete (though I do have potential) I do visit the gym once a week, do push-ups almost every day and generally make sure I look pretty decent.

I'd like to play more sports too, most of them are games afterall and I like to call myself a non-discriminatory gamer. That is, I like to play games in general; boardgames, card games, videogames and that includes sports too.

So I guess that's pretty anti-stereotypical already. The whole stereotype doesn't hold up that well nowadays anyway. Plenty of pretty nerdy people who keep in shape.

Well, not really a competitive sport but i am an avid gym-user. Oh and i run 3 times a week aswell. And people keep telling me i can't like Hip Hop/Rap and at the same time be a hardcore gamer and love international politics, but i don't really think that's true. I know a lot of people that are nerdy and who like that kind of music.

Maybe?

I mean, I like to play alot of pick up games. (American) football, basketball, ice/street/deck hockey. I'll play anyhting really as long as the person lets me know how and has enough patience if i'm new.

I used to be. I'd join in in sports whenever my friends were playing and be pretty damn good. What happened? My parents both stopped moving, so my exercise is gone. Moving was the bane of my existence, yet it was keeping me alive... how ironic...

Uh, if we were athletes, we'd be getting more respect than war heroes, altruists and civil servants combined... just like the rest of the athletes.

Yes.
I played both football and basketball in high school, and am a black belt in Brazilian Jujitsu and Kyokushin.
If I hadn't broken one leg, and tore a muscle in the other, I'd still be playing competetively.

All through junior high and high school, I played football as both defensive and offensive lineman. The funny thing is, when I was in high school, while the rest of my teamates would go partying after our saturday games, I went straight from the locker room to my Saturday night D&D game.

I play soccer twice a week and am pretty open about my nerdiness. Heck a guy I play DnD with often challenges me to "whose nerdier" contests. I often win, but he sometimes has an edge.

Then again it is house league, and just for fun, but that +occasional gym times=OK?

Firstly, fellow lurker, congrats on your first post here.

Secondly, I am a geek/nerd, and would be lying if I said that I was an athletic person. I suck at sport, and can't admit to liking exercise. (Luckily, though, I have a fast metabolism, so I look trim even if I don't do anything to try and maintain it.) But yeah, I have met quite a few people who are massive nerds, but still like to keep fit: just another slightly flimsy stereotype, I guess. ^_^

Me? An athlete? Haha, no. I kinda look it, but I'm not. Not in the slightest. Between just not enjoying it and not wanting anything to do with the majority of the athletes where I live, sports have never had any appeal to me.

I am a good runner, and I play soccer at a decent level so I guess that makes me a mini-athlete.

Ahahahahahaha no. I used to play football (that's soccer to you crazy murricans) and handball. Volleyball for a while. Then I just worked out to keep in shape. After my time in the Army (where I was in great shape), I haven't worked out. That's ten years ago.

PS. I should note, I never really did any serious competition. I quit both football and handball before turning fifteen, so it was more fun and games than anything. I -technically- competed in the third highest national league in volleyball. Which says nothing about my ability.
