Chivalry is just disguised chauvanism. I hope it dies.
Nay, young impetuous rogue. It shall outlast your snap judgment. Also, good sir, I would be less than chivalrous were I to ignore the opportunity to educate you in the ways of spelling lexicon that finds it roots in French Language; Observe: not chauvanism, but chauvinism. From the french figure Chauvin.
I really don't care how chauvanism is spelled. Also, read the rest of my post.
You had not posted anything other than the above quote by the time I remarked on it's short-sighted nature. You should care how words are spelled. At least use a spell-check if you don't want to take the time to learn :)
Do you really think I'm so obsessive compulsive that I'm going to type the word in...well, Word before posting it here just to see if I got the spelling right?

Of course it is dead. In a society where everyone is supposedly equal and women are meant to be men and men are being emasculated, you can not point out the difference, even if it is to do a kind act. Obviously it does not surprise me and other people that rates of depression are also on the increase.

Yup, I follow it along with the Southern Gentlemens Code of 1843. Which is the most chivalris thing a man can do!

Reading this thread I really have to ask: Do any of you even fucking know what Chivalry means?

Because I can give you a clue, it isn't about whether you hold a door open for some woman.

No, chivalry's not dead, it's just not noticed as much. Or sometimes it's even just flat out unappreciated.

Next time I come across a super-feminist who says something along the lines of "I can open the door myself!" I'm going to have her open it for me and mention something about signing up for the draft.

...Sorry for the unrelated mini-rant.

The sad thing is, nowadays, many (not all, so don`t jump at my throat unless the shoe fits) women expect to be treated as equals (a perfectly reasonable demand) while retaining the treatment they were once given when they were considered `fragile` (or whatever the correct adjective is) which is where their point gets hazy.
Being a gentleman entails being polite, however it also entails treating them like they do, in fact, somehow require our help/kindness. The new age way of thinking, on the other hand, insists both sexes are equal. Although this has merit, women can`t expect men to keep treating them with bias due to their sex, only to turn around later and expect equal rights and salaries.
Don`t get me wrong, I`m all for equality. I only suggest equality be maintained wether it is in regards to money, the right to vote or most of all (at least most of all in the given thread) the way people treat you in everyday life.
The only problem with this suggestion is that it would require men to treat women they will never date like they would any other man... Which they won`t... But should.
Essentially, the whole debate would be up to the women of today to decide: Equality (which would include having to hold your own door open *with this I include all courteous treatment* as well as the complete removal of bias in divorces, which is kind of an issue...) or to expect differential treatment, only to highlight the difference between genders, seperating both to the point where gender-roles re-emerge in society, this, no matter how you look at it, would be a bad thing. Because in every society, one role is going to come out as `superior`to another, thus, depending on roles, one sex would become the `superior sex`. The problem with that is, as history has demonstrated clearly through the centuries, in humanity, men tend to take such things to heart, not to mention that most of the world`s more... Idealistic lots, which do technically consist a majority of earth population, would obviously never allow men to become the weaker of both sexes. Leading most of earth to insist upon a `woman`s place` which (because lets face it, people are sheep) would eventually win over countries with a new world view, causing all the progress women have achieved throughout the century to go to waste.
Case in point, chivalry is dead out of necessity, but it is very dead.

Chivalry:The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women.

thats what I found when I looked up the words definition, and my microsoft thesaurus seems to back up the definition.

Or am I mistaked?

Of course not. I think that some men naturally are chivalrous so it will never die.

That's more or less it. However knighthood involved actively maintaining the status quo of Medieval Europe like lordship and serfdom. Knights were not particularly awesome people. They're romanticized soldiers.

I treat women like everyone else and wish others would do the same. I also don't get why people are putting the blame of feminism solely on women.

I give everyone a certain amount of respect, if they choose to be nice or not will alter how much respect they gain from me, sex doesn't enter the equation :)

Sadly, yes. It was awesome while it lasted, though.

[sub]I still say 'huzzah' all the time....[/sub]
I don't see it as being dead, but more like it's changing with the times.

[sub]Huzzah, indeed.[/sub]

I'm still a firm believer of it. Fuck any women who has a problem with it.
I really hope you were being ironic...

OT: In my opinion chivalry is the only way equality can exist, women are built differently to men and therefore the sexes will always have different capabilities, I have a larger more powerful body than most women, therefore I will offer them my coat as my larger body will hold heat better, equally if i were to drop my keys somewhere that was too narrow for my hands to reach through I would look to a woman for help as their smaller more agile hands and arms are better suited to the task, chivalry and equality are both just names for the sexes using their physical differences to support one another.

Chivalry and manners may be fading but i would rather be obsolete than degenerate into what in the uk are termed chavs or townies (google them if you dont recognise the term)

P.S. these are just off the top of my head examples.
