Hello fellow Escapists, I will be purchasing a 3DS by the end of this week, and I've been looking for a good starting game but I can't figure out what I should get.

Help a brother out?

Fire Emblem: Awakening! It's one of the best titles on 3DS at the moment.
These are critically acclaimed titles, you can look up their trailers, see if you dig the gameplay: Kid Icarus: Uprising, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong, Shin megami Tensei IV, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Animal Crossing, Super Mario 3D Land and Monster Hunter.

3DS can also play DS games, so if you haven't got yourself a DS, there're a ton of great titles for you to choose.

Depends on what you like.

My personal favorites so far are

Shin Megami Tensei IV
Animal Crossing New Leaf
Super Mario 3D Land
Luigi's Mansion Dark Side of the Moon
Fire Emblem Awakening
Mario Kart 7
Kid Icarus : Uprising

As for games exclusive to the E-Shop, I absolutely love Sakura Samurai

I like pretty much everything, so I'm really open to suggestions. I'm not a hardcore rpg fan though, but if it's a good one, I'll definitely play it.

In that case:

Fire Emblem Awakening (Best game on the system IMO)
Kid Icarus
Super Mario 3D Land
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Devil Survivor Overclocked

Fire Emblem and Donkey Kong were the two I was debating between. Which one do you think I should get first?

Fire Emblem for sure. I can't stress enough just how awesome that game is. Easily my Game of the Year so far.

First of all, if at all possible, get yourself a 3DS XL. It might be a little extra money, but for a significantly larger screen and longer battery life the extra $20-$50 will be WELL worth it, I promise you.

Apart from that, I think most everyone here has covered what I was going to recommend. I assume since you aren't asking for DS games as well you already had a DS and don't need to catch up on any of those, lol.

What ever you do get Fire Emblem Awakening. It is worth getting a 3ds just for that game. This is one of the only games that I want to grind in, just so that I can spend more time in this amazing world with these amazing characters.

Monster Hunter tri Ultimate also isn't bad(not as good as Fire Emblem). It is fun to play solo and with friends.

Fire Emblem. I may not have played Donkey Kong but I am 110% sure that Fire Emblem is better. Amazing characters, fun gameplay, and a great world. The only thing I would want is for it to be even longer and to be able to interact with the characters more. However it is still decently long, especially if you grind. Also it makes sense for you not to get a lot of interaction with all of the character because there are like 50 of them(you get 3 conversations with each character, 4 with your wife, and then each character gets 3 conversations with whoever they can become friends with). Fire Emblem is an Amazing game and one of the best games I have ever had the privilege to play. I would put it up there with Oblivion and Dragon Age which are my favorite games of all time. I cannot gush enough over how amazing this game is. You need to get and you need to get it yesterday.

edit: You are getting an XL right? I have friends who have the regular and it is so tiny and the grip is a little tight. Even though it is a little more I suggest you get an xl.

edit numero dos:

what is Shin Megami Tensei like? I heard about it on the TGS Co-optional podcast and thought it sounded kind of interesting.

I was already planning on getting an XL, shame it doesn't come in more colors other than red or blue >.<

Like many others haves stated, it would be helpful for all parties if you told us what are your preferences.
However the list of good games seem to go like this:

Fire Emblem: Awakening
Donkey Kong Country 3D(providing you don't have the Wii U version)
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Shin Megami Tensei(tensen?)
Luigis Mansion 2

I haven't played many 3DS games, admittedly, but New Leaf is a better time than one would expect. It's starting to get boring for me, but I already put in 35-40 hours, so it was worth the $35 anyway.
I also really, really enjoyed Kingdom Hearts 3D, but I can only recommend that if you've played previous games. Otherwise it's a massive load of WTF.

If you get Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei IV before August 31st and register them on club nintendo you get a $30 rebate.

It's sorta of like a pokemon except with a much deeper storyline and the possibility of dying in every battle.

Pokemon X and Y.
That's all I can say.

Also one of the only reasons I'm gonna get a 3DS.

I believe the other reason was a certain Legend of Zelda game.

Huh. I just read up on that. Sucks that you don't get the silver / white / Blue (fire emblem) / a bunch of others in NA.

I've got one of these

And it makes me grin pretty much every time I pick it up.

OT: As has been said to death, Fire Emblem Awakening should be your first port of call. But it depends what you like. I'd suggest Sf4 3d if you're a fighter fan, SMT IV / Devil survivor for a JRPG fan, Monster hunter if you have the patience for it, Animal crossing if you hate your life and want a horrible addiction.

If you've never owned a DS, the list gets VERY long.

*EDIT*

Oh, and Mario Kart 7 is by far the best Mario Kart game ever IMO. It's really good.

First of all, Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei IV. There's a promotion where you'll get $30 eShop credit if you buy both games before the end of August. SMT4 costs $50 which is unusually high for a 3DS game but if you like RPGs and are on board for something offbeat and full of weird, you'll like the game. You might even love it. However I'd look up previews since it has a very oldschool skeleton that is brutal for the unprepared. SMTIV is probably the most hardcore difficulty of any 3DS game.

No one has mentioned it but ETRIAN ODYSSEY IV might be one of the best titles on the 3DS. It's also made by Atlus like the aforementioned SMTIV, but it's colourful, it's mystical, and very engaging. The story is basic and unobtrusive but also isn't bad. It's a motivation to keep going on your real task: Drawing maps and using your wits to navigate expertly designed mazes. It's a 1st person dungeon crawler with a whole lot of heart, and has an amazing soundtrack to boot. There isn't a whole lot of flair here but the presentation is still top notch and the gameplay just works. There's a demo in the eShop and I highly recommend you check out this hidden gem. And if you do like it, the Etrian Odyssey demo data can be used as a starter for a new file in the full game.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a nice game to play on a daily basis. I recommend it on the eShop if you're into relaxing life sims, so you don't have to carry the cartridge everywhere. It's something you can spend half an hour-hour a day and unwind, since the goals are basically spread out over a long time.

Kid Icarus: Uprising combines rail shooting with on-foot experiences. The controls can be wonky since it relies on a "dual analog" without a 2nd analog stick, but it's practically a new IP made by the Smash Bros team. Sakurai's one of my favourite game designers so I'm hugely biased towards supporting what he works on.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star may have annoyed RPG fans looking for a continuation of the witty adventures of Mario and his companions, but it's a decent hybrid of platformer, puzzle game and RPG. I would say it's lower on the ladder than most 3DS games but it has its moments.

Mario Kart 7 is your standard Mario Kart experience, except they nixed the preset weight class karts for customizable generic machines. I personally prefer this game to its Wii counterpart as generally the BS of the AI has been toned down and there are only 8 racers instead of 16. Also it brings back SNES Rainbow Road!

In the future, Ace Attorney 5 and Bravely Default are coming out. Ace Attorney will be out this year and is basically a text adventure game with some point and click segments, but the writing is both funny and dramatic. Bravely Default is another RPG that is the spiritual successor of the flawed-but-conceptually interesting Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light. Other, more obvious future releases are Zelda and Pokemon. Whether or not you like those games should be pretty obvious without even playing them.

I agree with the general list, but stress that you must get Luigi's Mansion 2 the most. It's a very clever, very well paced and very interesting game. It really stands out from it's peers; even it's predecessor. If you like unique game experiences, check dat one. The variety of mansions make it way less repetitive than the first one.

Think of it like....a unique kind of Adventure Game like PC point and clicks, but with platforming and ghostly combat. It's so unique.
