I've heard something about a new Slim ps3 coming out soon, so if i was you I would wait.
The slim version has already been done and has been out for almost 2 years now

Do you have any references to your claim?

he probably meant the new backwards compatible (among other improvements) PS3.
Well, there was a rumour that a new version of the Slim model would feature backwards compatibility, but I thought it was just that, a rumour. At least, that the last I've
heard.
Anyway, as for OT: Even though most of my recommendations have already been mentioned, you really should get them:
Demon's Souls. My favourite game on the PS3, hands down. It might be unforgiving, but it's never unfair. Take your time, don't rush and it's one hell of a game. It's got some of the deepest combat mechanics I've ever seen, it's really, really well done. Also, the different areas of the games are beautiful, each in their own way.
Little Big Planet 1 + 2: Great platformers, cute as hell and the level creater tools are immensely powerful. You should see some of the levels, that have been crafted online, it's insane.
Killzone 2 + 3: Both are great, though if you're going for multiplayer, I'd recommend number 3. That's what I play mostly, anyway. The multiplayer really is great, it's well-designed, reasonably well balanced and some of the most fun I've had playing online, since BF1942 came out, back then. Also, the class system is really nice, though it doesn't allow for as much flexibility, as the second game did.
3D Dot Game Heroes: Now, I've never played the Zelda games, but I thought this game was fantastic. The style of the game is blocky, but you'll get used to it, it's really good-looking anyway. The adventure style, that the game features really is a lot of fun.
Ratchet and Clank Games: Some of the best platformers, I've ever played. The weapons are amazing, there's a lot of variety, some more useful than others, of course, but most are just plain fun to use. The humour is also great in the games. Definitely get them, if you like platformers as all.
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West: I'll throw this in, for good measure. It's fun and colourful, though it is a bit short. It's a platformer and if you can get it cheap, I'll recommend buying it.
Uncharted 1 + 2(and soon 3): Also really fun games. They're platformers(I think), with shooting parts thrown in. They have a fun cast, a nice story and generally plays very well, if you like these games. I highly recommend them, I had a lot of fun playing them.
That's all for me now, hope you can use some of the recommendations!
