Always, and I mean always, make landmarks! Right beside my spawn, I have signs telling me where things are. As I follow those signs, I have landmarks that I will remember mean, "Oh, mine this way." or "Oh, my town this way". Just make your mark on the land and you will never get lost again! Above ground. Underground is a different story. When in doubt, dig up.
LIES!

digging up is a sure way to flood your tunnel with water or lava!

sometimes you can get BOTH.

AT THE SAME TIME.
That's why you should dig up, but not STRAIGHT up, ie dig a staircase. Then it will at least be relatively easy to cut off the water or lava, so long as you're quick enough.

I bring a pre-made workbench, stove, and chest with me when exploring. You never know when you'll need to hunker down for a bit and make an outpost. A favorite thing to do is make super awesome diamond gear, put it in a chest and bury the chest somewhere random. I'm a twisted soul.

Don't forget a stack of unprocessed wood, just in case you run out of sticks for torches and/or pickaxes.
I usually just make diamonds into blocks and store them in my home :D
I might be able to make a small tower out of them soon...

After a while, you'll start to memorize where everything is.
[sub]That's what happened to me![/sub]

Putting up a lot of signs would work too, I guess.

my solution is simple
i travel underground, i have several houses but they are all connected by a set of underground tunnels begining at my giant tower that can be seen from miles away with tons of burning netherack around it as a beacon

i find my way back to I-max Tower, i can get anywhere

i imagine it took a while to dig all those tunnels though so this method isnt recommended for everyone

I have no idea how during my travels across the internet I've never seen that. o_O
But that is awesome.

Which is why I use tunnels in the nether to connect all of my main landmarks, which I usually build far away from each other.

just use a converter instead of the fail google this guy sent you. also the euro is pretty low now so now is the time to buy games. ^^

oh and i also like having dark portals around places, but mainly i can find my way back by all the towers i've built around.

People always say "what do you like most?"

OT: I always start building my fort centered exactly on my spawn point, so when I do get a compass it will point straight home. Said fort always goes straight up into the sky so I don't need the compass most of the time. The easiest thing to do is make a 2x1 tower of dirt straight up into the air as high as possible, then you can just dig yourself down, leaving a 1x1 tower that's really hard to miss.

I make a 3 stone tall pillar for markers and a L shaped one for a dungeon, usually I top them with a torch for extra visibility.

Also there's cartograph a awesome program that shows you the world you're in.

My world so far:

I haven't played it in a while so all the trees are same-y but I was trying to explore as much as I could on the surface...which is my why world is 35MB...

Used to happen to me quite a bit. I've lost like five homes because I failed to make a lighthouse or some roads or something before I was killed or went out to look for some stuff I might need.

Basically what I do to find my way around is to plant torches and build roads whenever I explore.
Also, as a measure of safety so I can travel amongst my various buildings and outposts at night, I build glass tunnels connecting all my lighthouse towers.

I simply recall everything about the area that I'm digging in/traveling in. Should I be above ground, then I make a straight line for my home afterward; if below ground then I simply retrace my steps to the entrance.

Though, past your first few extended expeditions deep underground you'll find that you'll have acquired many hundred lines of red dust; which, given it's convenient pick up and put down rate, makes useful guidelines should you consistently find yourself disorientated deep underground.

mines over 100 mb now. : <

also another tip is when your exploring just go off straight in a direction and note which direction that is in. ^^ (i died and found my way back to a base which were a 30 minute walk like this)

A hundred me-....you ...you! ...:| ....Bastard! >:U How dare you get more bites than me!

That's quite impressive, you should use cartograph to take a few pics to show off. It can show you the level from the top, oblique, night, day and even the cave systems.
