GH and Rock Band have turned me on to many artists I would've never had any interest in or even heard of... I'm not talking about mainstream stuff or classic rock like Ozzy or Weezer, mostly indie bands and the like...

Not at all.
Why?
Because the songs that are being played bad aren't being played by the actual artists. And I recognize that.
While that was the case w/ Guitar Hero 1 & 2, almost all of the music in these games are master tracks by the original artists now...
I agree, I love Anarchy Club, a band i would've never heard of without playing Rock Band, but it makes me mad when people say "I love Disturbed, Down with the Sickness is a great song!" but then if I respond "Yeah, but Ten Thousand Fists is better" they have no idea what I'm talking about due to the fact they believe they can tell a band from one song from a video game.

I completely agree. I don't like listening to songs that I used to love, simply due to Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

I can beat BLANK on BLANK!

Well I can "beat" BLANK in real life on a real guitar instead of a fake, flimsy piece of plastic!
Yeah I hate those people, ok it´s somewhat cool to see someone play fast as hell on GH but even more so on a real guitar. but it´s like comparing watching a movie and making one.
btw nice avatar. what ever hapend to Jay and Silent bob?

EDIT - Just to clarify what I'm saying, it's like people are praising and burning the songs not because they really like the music or found it to be their liking, but because it's on Guitar Hero/ Rock Band.
I still am slightly confused... Let me try to understand again. If you liked the song Flight of the Bumbleee, while I didn't, but I said (and this is the truth) that I could get an A ranking on Flight of the Bumblebee in Flash Flash Revolution, it would ruin the song for you?

So, you don't like listening to people talk about how good they are at the game because you think they don't like the song for the song, but instead, like it because its just difficult on GH/RB? Did I get that right?
Yes something like that. For example my friends never even cared about Raining Blood or Through the Fire and Flames, or even liked those bands for that matter, until they got obsessed with GH 3. After that they always bring up the song every now and then, but only about how they're obsessed with beating the songs in the game.
Bah, this seems like more of a pet peeve for you than anything. I don't mind hearing the song outside of the game, even though I hear a lot of people say things like your friends. I suppose I can agree with you to an extent. I do feel like (as a user posted above) that one XKCD comic is true to many kids.

As for me, I'll stick with the music I like as it isn't terribly mainstream and would rarely be put in a GH/RB game. I can think of no one, apart from myself, who wants to jam to Hawthorne Heights' "Ohio is for Lovers" on a video game.

[small]So cut my wrists and black my eyes![/small]

Edit2:

My roommate just brought up a very good point. Another reason you dislike these songs is that they have become overplayed on the radio. You used to have to look long and hard for a radio station that would play Slayer and the like. I can find that, as well as stuff like Devil Wears Prada on the radio much more often now that it has been released on Rock Band.

Maybe its just the feeling of, that band you like that nobody had heard of has now become mainstream, and you hate it.

Guitar Hero's version of "Pride and Joy" is terrible, the singer sounds like a walrus being strangled with with it's own intestines.

That's not what I meant.
I don't care how you play the songs in the games, because they are games. No matter what, unless you get the song to be perfect, I won't consider it to be ruining the song, because, in my eyes, it won't be the same thing as if I had a track of it.
Sorry, my bad...

No, if you don't get it thats fine I'm just stating how some music that used to be jewels to some of us are now too commercialized because of their popularity on the games.

Exactly... Anarchy Club, Freezepop, Bang Camaro, Every Time I Die... I never would have heard of these great bands if not for Guitar Hero...

Wtf?

"Retarded rattling?" "Posers?"

I'm more than a little confused.

Even though many of my favorite songs have been featured in video games where the listening experience was weakened by the sound of gunfire, for example, or the screams of pedestrians being run over, I still enjoy those songs.
Why don't you understand? The "rattling" is the flimsy plastic toy that you use in Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The "posers" are the ones that think they are sweet because they can play with said flimsy plastic toy.

And I don't know what GH/RB you're playing that has gunfire and screams of pedestrians being ran over.

I would be happy to explain. I saw a mistake, so I corrected it (I don't recall insulting you in any way shape or form.)

The title of the thread is "GH/RB Ruined Your Music?" not "Videogames Ruined Your Music?". Brutal Legend is not Guitar Hero or Rock Band, so he was not referring to it. And like it was said earlier, Brutal Legend is an amazing game by Tim Schafer that oozes the spirit of metal. Not some casual game that can be found in every house on the block.

On the contrary - the main reason I play Guitar Hero and Rock Band these days is as an alternative way of experiencing songs that I already knew. But then, I think the whole mentality of "this game made this song popular and now it's ruined" is absolutely moronic. I'm quite happy to admit that it's introduced me to stuff I didn't know or wasn't previously interested in, and I don't know why people have a problem with that.

IF anything Rock bands given some of my favourite songs a better quality as I find myself actually listening to the guitar notes and instrumentals to a song rather then focusing entirely on the singer.

I am in the "it's great exposure for the artists" camp. I never would have discovered some of the better stuff on there without playing Rock Band. I don't hate the songs that are on there now, in fact it makes like the classic songs even more and tempts me to check out new bands.

Also, just because you discover a band through Rock Band doesn't make you a poser. I discovered Killswitch Engage via the closing credits of Resident Evil: Apocalypse. It's what you do once you've discovered the band that determines whether you're a true fan.

I'm referring to other games that have music in them. (In that particular case I was referring to Grand Theft Auto)

And I still don't understand what people's problem with the music game genre is.

All controllers are "flimsy plastic toys".

Is someone who "thinks they are sweet" at a FPS a poser? RTS? RPG?

I see now. I overreacted a bit.

I do, however, disagree with your first point. Sure, I could go play the song on a real guitar, and yes, that would be much more of a feat, I suppose. But why would I want to do that? That would require me spending a ton of money on a real guitar, amp, and lessons, as well as time learning how to play the song. I would much rather pick up a video game and play along with the song without having to do all the prior mentioned tasks.

If you can play the song on a real guitar, whoop-dee-fuckin-doo. The reason people play GH/RB is the fact that they can feel like they're playing the real song on guitar without spending so much time learning how to do the real thing.

Side note:
I can beat BLANK on BLANK!
Is just as bad as, if not worse than

Well I can "beat" BLANK in real life on a real guitar instead of a fake, flimsy piece of plastic!

They didn't ruin my music, Metallica is my favorite band, and has been sense WAY before GH:Metallica came out.

But what does piss me off is when people suddenly become huge fans of a band because they played one of there songs on GH/RB, then try to act like they know everything about them.

I just hate when i listen to a song that i am generally a fan of, and some kid says "I love that song, it was on Guitar Hero!". It makes me die inside.

Why?! How is that any different from "I love that song, it was on the radio the other day!" or "I love that song, it was in GTA 4!"

Theres not a problem with them liking the song, just the people that try to act like know a band cuz the played one of there songs.

I had the longest argument with a guy trying to tell me that Dave Mustaine was never in Metallica.

Yeah, because everyone knows the quality of the music is entirely dependant on who listens to it and how...
This, apparently you aren't allowed to discover new music through a game, or you aren't a "true fan".

Okay... how does the music game genre have anything to do with that?

There have always been morons who don't know shit about what they're talking about, and there always will be.
