Sorry I didn't mean to imply that the other original Mech games were rubbish. I was more meaning stuff like Mech Assault on the Xbox.

As an aside, there is a significant and visible difference between the western and Japanese take on Giant Robots that goes beyond aesthetics and into behavior. Typically (mainly owing to the development of FASA's tabletop war games, RPGs and videogame licenses), the western "Mech" looks and operates much more like a walking tank than the Japanese "Mecha" (influenced by Gundams, Evas, and many more sources than I can recall), which looks and operates more like a very large humanoid robot with greater speed and dexterity. My personal preference is on the westernized treatment, but that's just one voice.
I totally agree with your assessment. I also prefer the western version. To me, it feels a little more realistic. Almost like that type of thing could actually be made. Plus, I used to play all the FASA tabletop games, and the nostalgia is unbeatable. I wish they were still making those games too.

Command and Concer Read alert 3 has some cool Robot fighting, other than that the entire genre has been killed by that Gundam game, seriesly though try Chrome Hounds, that is a fun game.

I did love mechwarrior and I'm a sucker for giant robot games. I have even played most of the armored core games even though they tend to be fairly mediocre, all things considered.

Personally, I'd LOVE to see a new Heavy Gear. The technology and story of heavy gear always seemed so much more believable. I'd certainly settle for a new Mechwarrior, especially if they keep the slot system of MW4 (Which I first despised but grew to love).

Playing Mechwarrior 4 Mercs as we speak(on a quad core with a gtx 280,you have to laugh at the overkill of the machine for the game:) and was thinking the same thing myself, the Mechwarrior games kicked ass,I want a new one too...optimised for all our shiny new hardware they would rock.
Do people still play that online? I have the entire MW4 saga and all the expansions, but I haven't played online since I was in highschool (2001 - 2002).

Armored Core was too difficult for me (I only played #3). I like games where you pick your mech, a gun, and kill stuff. In example, my favorite mech game:
Gundam Fed vs. Zeon

It was simple, but a lot of fun missons (HOLY CRAP! I GOTTA KILL 85 BALLS AT ONCE!) and a ton of mobile suits (big zom fights!)

Also, who here remembers R.A.D. (robotic alchlemic drive)
It was different (what they couldn't strap a chair to the top of the mech?) but was fun and was the first game I played that let me use the ps2 sticks as direct controls of my arms (drunk boxing that it was).

I loved these mech games and really want to see more good Gundam games (no more of this PS3 crap)

I really think they should make another Steel Battalion. For those of you who have never heard of SB. it was a game for the 1st xbox and the damn controller alone was over 100$, but the game was addicting. A very nice Mech sim, It took a LONG time to master the controls. 1 stick to move 1 to aim and enough buttons and switches to make your head spin. Take the controller From SB, mix in a little old school mech warrior, and the Chromehounds Customizing options (expect for the fact that you can hang 40+tons of weapons on pencil thick legs) and i think you might just have the making of good mech game.

I like how people bemoan Dynasty Warriors: Gundam as the fall of the mecha game genre, failing to note that

A. It, like all other Dynasty Warriors games, was big in Japan (and moreso because over there Gundam = Awesome for them)
B. If you were expecting a dynasty warriors game to be anything but "Here's you vs. 400 weak enemies, kill them", then I don't know what to tell you, really.

But yeah, I miss the Mechwarrior games too. Specifically Mechwarrior 3 because of its very good graphics and damage modeling on mechs.

There's only two giant mech games I liked that I want sequels for, and both surprisingly were on the PS2. Probably not a lot of you remember these.

Ring of Red - Awesome game. Diesel mechs, alternate reality WW2 scenario, Tactical gameplay with luck and strategy playing equal roles. A shame that Konami shit on their smaller titles. Gimme back Suikoden and Vandal Hearts, damnit!

Robot Alchemic Drive or R.A.D. - Hokey but awesome game from Enix before they merged with Square. Giant robot vs. giant robot in classic anime style, that the likes of Big O and Giant Robo made famous. The game had a twist, because you weren't in the robot, you were controling it from within the city; and you could only watch the battle from first person and occasionally a helicopter news cam, so you had to find a high spot and stay far enough away from the action, or you'd get squashed. A unique twist on the genre I haven't seen tried again since.

Yes..we definitely need a next gen steel battalion!! just the price is a major turn off and the complexity of the game would probably make a lot of people intimidated or turned off from it. People seem to put too much value on simplicity and stream line these days from what I've seen but damn I would love to play this on a next gen console or PC.

I knew someone else must have played this! I love that there were actual consequences for colateral damage (If you squashed your girlfriends house she gets sad and lives with her grandma). I actually felt sorry for that chick.
