I totally agree with your assessment. I also prefer the western version. To me, it feels a little more realistic. Almost like that type of thing could actually be made. Plus, I used to play all the FASA tabletop games, and the nostalgia is unbeatable. I wish they were still making those games too.KneeLord said:As an aside, there is a significant and visible difference between the western and Japanese take on Giant Robots that goes beyond aesthetics and into behavior. Typically (mainly owing to the development of FASA's tabletop war games, RPGs and videogame licenses), the western "Mech" looks and operates much more like a walking tank than the Japanese "Mecha" (influenced by Gundams, Evas, and many more sources than I can recall), which looks and operates more like a very large humanoid robot with greater speed and dexterity. My personal preference is on the westernized treatment, but that's just one voice.
Do people still play that online? I have the entire MW4 saga and all the expansions, but I haven't played online since I was in highschool (2001 - 2002).schiz0phren1c said:Playing Mechwarrior 4 Mercs as we speak(on a quad core with a gtx 280,you have to laugh at the overkill of the machine for the gameand was thinking the same thing myself, the Mechwarrior games kicked ass,I want a new one too...optimised for all our shiny new hardware they would rock.

Yes..we definitely need a next gen steel battalion!! just the price is a major turn off and the complexity of the game would probably make a lot of people intimidated or turned off from it. People seem to put too much value on simplicity and stream line these days from what I've seen but damn I would love to play this on a next gen console or PC.Neo Zx-Tole said:I really think they should make another Steel Battalion. For those of you who have never heard of SB. it was a game for the 1st xbox and the damn controller alone was over 100$, but the game was addicting. A very nice Mech sim, It took a LONG time to master the controls. 1 stick to move 1 to aim and enough buttons and switches to make your head spin. Take the controller From SB, mix in a little old school mech warrior, and the Chromehounds Customizing options (expect for the fact that you can hang 40+tons of weapons on pencil thick legs) and i think you might just have the making of good mech game.

I knew someone else must have played this! I love that there were actual consequences for colateral damage (If you squashed your girlfriends house she gets sad and lives with her grandma). I actually felt sorry for that chick.Quiotu said:Robot Alchemic Drive or R.A.D. - Hokey but awesome game from Enix before they merged with Square. Giant robot vs. giant robot in classic anime style, that the likes of Big O and Giant Robo made famous. The game had a twist, because you weren't in the robot, you were controling it from within the city; and you could only watch the battle from first person and occasionally a helicopter news cam, so you had to find a high spot and stay far enough away from the action, or you'd get squashed. A unique twist on the genre I haven't seen tried again since.
