Who am I to judge? I only drink El Patrón Tequila, because I choke on anything else.

So I'm in Taiwan for a bit of work and I've been hanging out with some Scottish visitors. At some point, we started talking about preferred drinks with most of them voting for some mix of vodka. My immediate reaction to the word "Vodka" was blatant disgust and then I told them that I prefer Gin and Tonic or just straight Gin if I was having a bad day.

They told me two things about my preferred alcohol. 1) Gin is a rich/cultured man's liquor 2) Gin is also a girly man's liquor.

Is this a scottish mentality or is Gin generally looked at this way? What are your thoughts on the possible girliness of gin?
Anyone who tells you Gin is unmanly has either a) a liver made from unobtainium or b) never drunk the stuff before.

Gin is a drink for men, and as far as I'm concerned, there are few better ways to stave of the summer heat than a G'n'T over ice.

I don't think Gin isn't a manly drink. Anyway, I have three standards for measuring the toughness of drinks. This is a recurrent talk with friends, feel free to object or add data at will.

First is what I call the "punch", this is the immediate reaction it generates in the person.
Tequila takes the first spot for dry drinks (those not in mixes, but ice is ok) in this category as sometimes it can be a killer. If I'm not feeling well I preffer to avoid it. Dry Vodka and some Whiskeys would come in second place.

Second is the percentage of alcohol per litre of each drink and the correlative drunkenness you feel after drinking a glass of it (a glass is not an exact measure, tequila gets the small "shot" glasses while whiskey uses the "normal" ones. I wouldn't drink a dry quarter litre of tequila no matter what.) Gin would be up there with some Whiskeys and dry Vodka.

Third comes the type of hangover it generates, measured both in length and harshness.
Tequila and some Wines (generally Red/Burgundy) take the podium, mixed drinks come close (mainly because sometimes I lost count of how much I'm drinking of each), Vodka comes close and Gin too. Whiskey, if taken alone is sort of "safe", so is beer, at least for me.

In this three categories Gin is ok in my book, it has a decent punch and it tastes good, it has quite a considerable ammount of alcohol (between 43º and 47º) and doesn't forgive, and I've never got properly drunk only by drinking mostly Gin but those friends who have have told me that its hangover is just unbearable.
In the same league comes Martini (which is actually a mix) and other "sweet" drinks people think are girly (those generally taken in mixes), try taking them dry, mixed they get camouflaged and take time to process but, after a while, they get you.

Nothing wrong with gin.

Its actually catching on as a replacement for vodka in bloody marys.

Nothing wrong with being rich\cultured, either. See who the ladies go to.

And everyone knows the lemon drop is a girly man's drink.

I've become a mead man myself. But yes Gin is a rather manly beverage and a gin and tonic is also a handy remedy for malaria or so im told.
It would be indeed be handy for malaria. At least, if you drank a lot of it. Tonic water has quinine in it, which is used to treat malaria.

Gin has not had a high class culture since it came out of the still in M.A.S.H, than again that stuff was rotgut. And Hawkeye Pierce is definatly no girly man for drinkin that shit all the time. Even though he's just a TV charahter.

So you drink your gin. And if they make fun of you again for your drink of choice. Out wit them.

Dude. You're fine. Don't even worry. No guy I've ever known really gives a shit what you're drinking. And pretty much every guy I know says an upside to having a girlfriend is that they get to steal their girl's.

But hey, what do I know? I only drink beer brewed from the gut of a mountain lion slain by Bear Grylls' bare hands. I know nothing of manly drinks.
I had that once, it's hard to get rid of the smell of lion afterwards. Animals fled at the smell of me for weeks.

On topic:
I don't find anything manly in being picky about what other people are doing. Besides, life would be boring if everyone agreed and drank the same stuff.

gin is only second to scotch in terms of manliness.
Nah the drinks order of "manliness" goes something like:

Whiskey
Vodka
Tequila
Beer
Gin
Brandy
Wine
MLP;FiM
Sherry
I disagree. I'd go more like..
Everclear/150+ proof alcohols
Whiskey/Scotch
Tequila
100+ proof peppermint schnapps
Gin
Vodka
Brandy
Beer
Wine
Triple sec/Blue curacco
Schnapps
(Sherry is simply added to most drinks)
(No idea what MLP;FiM) is
Wine coolers.
Beers under 70 calories.
Non alcoholic beer.

I've never heard any opinions about gin's 'manliness', but my opinion on vodka has generally been that it is neither manly nor girly, it's just a drink to me. Vodka's pretty good though.

I used to drink Jack Daniels, then jumped from vodka brand to vodka brand for a bit, then went to Jim Beam, and recently I've been enjoying Fighting Cock.
Added bonus: Fighting Cock is 103 proof. :)

This! Why do people worry about what other people think? I drink a lot of stuff, but sometimes (normally if I'm feeling rich) I spend the night on Gin & Tonic. I know I'm gonna get ribbed for this, but I know it's all harmless - I can say with tongue firmly in cheek that gin is definitely a gentleman's drink, and everyone else needs to get out my bar.

The only people who deserve ire is anyone who is an epic lightweight and brags about it.

I thought this was a Bleach topic considering there's a character named Gin. xD
Phew, thank you. I was worried that I was the only one who had that thought first cross their minds. Although I think it means I've been watching too much Bleach. Don't know how "manly" that particular Gin would be, but he is pretty awesome :D

OT: Like most have said, it is not a girly liquor. Things like X-Rated or Hypnotic are girly liquors (if you can even call them liquors). Gin is more of a "gentlemanly" drink, but still manly.

Well I've always considered Vodka to be a very girly drink cause it's the main alcohol beverage for chicks here in Aus, where as Rum, Beer and bourbon are more manly drinks. Thats mostly cause it's always drank with energy drinks and fruit flavours so when someone say vodka I think alcopops and Mudslides.

Can't really say when in comes to Gin, not popular enough here.

gin is pretty good, i prefer 151 myself but a nice gin and tonic once and awhile is refreshing, especially if its a hot day and ive been doing physical labor of some sort.
