So I'm in Taiwan for a bit of work and I've been hanging out with some Scottish visitors. At some point, we started talking about preferred drinks with most of them voting for some mix of vodka. My immediate reaction to the word "Vodka" was blatant disgust and then I told them that I prefer Gin and Tonic or just straight Gin if I was having a bad day.

They told me two things about my preferred alcohol. 1) Gin is a rich/cultured man's liquor 2) Gin is also a girly man's liquor.

Is this a scottish mentality or is Gin generally looked at this way? What are your thoughts on the possible girliness of gin?

Real men drink aviation fuel. Seriously though, gin tonic might be considered by tough scots as unmanly, if they wouldn't mix their vodka with something. Unless they were to mix it with drinking alcohol or something.

gin is actually quite hardcore i can't drink it.

i'll stick to my rum.

however (possibly for this very reason) it is also synonymous with middle aged
housewifes wearing too much make-up and crying, sat in a flight of stairs.

Dude. You're fine. Don't even worry. No guy I've ever known really gives a shit what you're drinking. And pretty much every guy I know says an upside to having a girlfriend is that they get to steal their girl's.

But hey, what do I know? I only drink beer brewed from the gut of a mountain lion slain by Bear Grylls' bare hands. I know nothing of manly drinks.

Heh, well I never encountered anything "girly" here in Canada yet. Yet to try Gin though so I'm not informed.

Gin is evil, it's like drinking Chinese food. Afterwards you feel like you've never drank water in your life!!!!

Gin is awesome, it's my favourite spirit. Gin and Tonic is one of the greatest drinks in the world. But it's got to be quality gin. None of that London's shite. Bombay Sapphire at minimum.
And since I drink it, it is by definition the manliest of drinks.

gin is only second to scotch in terms of manliness.
Nah the drinks order of "manliness" goes something like:

Whiskey
Vodka
Tequila
Beer
Gin
Brandy
Wine
MLP;FiM
Sherry

How is Gin not manly? It tastes like a lumberyard and was the preferred home-brew of Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce.

If you are underage and trying to get a drink at a bar, you order gin. Nobody will question your age.

That should sum up the manliness of it if you ask me. Or at least, the adultness of it.

*EDIT*
Further, I've never taken a lady home after she's had too much gin. Vodka, tequila, even whiskey if mixed. But not gin.

I've become a mead man myself. But yes Gin is a rather manly beverage and a gin and tonic is also a handy remedy for malaria or so im told.

What Gin has the most quality? I usually get stuck with Tanqueray or Beefeater.

Well, you can't really go wrong with Bombay Sapphire, it's pretty damn good. None of the oily flavours you get with cheaper gin. It's my standard gin whenever I go to buy a bottle.

I've heard good things about Plymouth gin, but I've never seen it for sale in my country. You're American though, you should be able to find it if you want to sample it.

Hendrick's is awesome, but again, really hard to find in Australia. :(

I wouldn't drink Beefeater unless I couldn't find a better one, but that Tanqueray you mentioned is another I've heard good things about but not sampled myself.

Sadly, the best gin I've had was one I can't remember the name of. It was about $100 per bottle. If I were you, I'd probably go with Bombay Sapphire, but whenever a chance came up to sample a different gin you've never had before, try it and see if it's to your taste.
