What exactly constitutes a girl gamer anyway. My gf plays Bejewled and Peggle and stuff, but nothing like Mass Effect or CoD. Is she a girl gamer? Does Microsoft Solitaire count? Minesweeper?

Anyway, yeah they think they are special snowflakes and I guess it is'nt as common as guy gamers (duh) but girls with some self respect should realize that their uniqueness comes from their heart. It's your humor, your charm and your intelligence that truly makes you special. And in the end...aren't we all special? :)
thats pretty much the question "what is a gamer?" a whole other topic...

your going to get many answers on that one, this is my definition

Girl gamer - will "claim" to be "such a nerd" and "a total gamer" even though shes hardly played anything besides the Wii for a bit, for the attention. May in fact play somthing a little more "gamer-esque" like COD or TF2 but will make a huge deal out of it

Gamer who happens to be female- enjoys games alot, any genre, online or single player. will put time and money into hobby wether that be a console/PC (or mabye both) may take interesting in gaming news/sites. Might have a favorite series

Don't really know what to say about the issue. I mean, I know quite a few girls who play LoL with me on a daily basis and they don't act like how you described, so I guess I'm just lucky.

Tbh I've never been on the receiving end of any of the flak that girls are supposed to get when playing games. The only time it came close was when some dickhead started following me around Stormwind saying 'hey cutie' 'sex? sex? sex' but a quick ignore was all that needed. Funnily enough I never got that when playing my male orc, but there you go.

There was a LJ group I was reading the other day specifically for female players of WoW, and they had a whole long post on harassment... now I'm sure harassment happens, but there is an ignore feature, a language filter, etc, and the fact that you don't have to tell anyone you're female unless you're on TS, which is usually going to be with a guild, and if they're dicks about it then surely, just leave o.o

brains is not a pre-requesite for being a geek..the way some fan-bases act should be proof enough :p

There is one girl on my fb (who added me because we were in the same class 9 years ago) who I suspect is labouring under the illusion that she as a "gurrl gamr" is something special and unique.
Most of them, however, do not parade their gaming habit. The only time they mention it is when someone makes a status about gaming, and they will reply with something like "Oh god I HATED that boss" or something to that effect.

Something that is worrying me about this thread is the fact that most people seem to think that if you advertise the fact that you like games that makes you a gamer gurrl.

What if you genuinely like games?

I know exactly what you're saying but I just find it funny. If you had said "act like a person, not a Mexican" or "act like a person, not a black" you would be tarred and feathered in zero time flat.

More on topic I have to say, I tend towards game that have less women in them or at least not as visible of a female gaming population. For MMOs like Ultima Online Freeshards, which seem to have a vagina = admin powers policy, I will usually aggressively hit on the female admins. I do this mostly because I know stereotypical 'gamer girls' will be grateful for my doing so, and because these particular ones have admin powers/will give me free stuff. And yes it worked like a charm. 3 out of 3 female admins were essentially in my pocket spawning gold and various in game items for me. I know; I'm a jerk(more so for encouraging corruption than being 'sexist'.)

As for people who don't have the power to benefit me in any way It basically depends on my mood as to how I act. And no I don't consider nude photos or cybering to be a benefit, photos can be had for free of(most likely) more attractive women, and cybering just sounds really fucking boring to me. Often times I will not care at all and will just play the game.

Other times I will try to hit on them as awkwardly as possible. Not because I think it will ever actually somehow endear me to them, although it has on several occasions... not sure how that actually happened. I do it because I find it completely hilarious to hit on internet women as brazenly and weirdly as I can manage with lines like "hey baby, you ever make it with a pro gamer? All that micro makes for agile fingers. knowutimeen?" Or "My penis is 7.47 inches, just like the jet plane."

But then again I also hit on guys and I'm not in the least bit gay. I'd post some of the things I'd say to them except most of them are a lot more lewd as I'm trying to bait homophobes; and I'd rather not get in trouble for 'offensive posting.'

So to any and all the women that I have made feel uncomfortable over my years of gaming, I offer my apologies for I am but a consummate videogame troll. I'd like to see a lot more gamers from any and all demographics, women included. I'm merely posting this to try to add an opinion that seems to be less heard in this thread from the other side of the table as it were.

Also as an addendum(food for thought) I have to say that 'gamer-girls' are just as desperate for attention as the men that gamer-guys who hit on them/white knight them. It seems kind of like a natural progression to me. "Girls need attention and boys need us" - Meiko. Just like with everything else on the internet this trend is ballooned to insane proportions by the Oscar Wilde effect("Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.") The internet masks everyone so the bulk of women and the bulk of men immediately fall into their most primal urges. Which dooms both genders equally, so I guess just make the best of it.

Wow, you're willing to go through a lot more shit to make a gamer friend than I would be willing to. I have absolutely no patience for stupid behavior. I will either start trolling or point out the exact insanity of what they are doing, in the harshest language I can manage. But then again in like 10 years of gaming I've only made about 30 friends of whom I only actively talk to about five of, so perhaps I'm not the best person to comment on such.

I don't refer to myself as a "girl" gamer. I have tits and a vagina. And I play games.
What have they got to do with eachother? Seriously.

Of course I do correct people if they refer to me as male, because I'm not male. But I'm not doing it to bring attention to my gender for the specific purpose of being attractive to the male gaming population.

Especially not since I'm a damn dyke.

I think people need to stop giving a damn whether or not a person lives up to their standards of what constitutes a 'real gamer/nerd/geek' whatever. It's a non-issue. Seriously.

I also find it interesting how it's only women who are required to fulfill these vague prerequisites to be accepted as a legitimate part of the group.
You don't see guys having to defend their love for games. Their taste in games, certainly, but the fundamental credibility of their interest?
Nope.

see thats the thing. I dont think she did..she didnt go off on a tanget saying "Im the REAL DEAL or whatever" she simply mentioned her gender perhaps because it might show her perspecitve on the issue

kind of like the comment I posted above...to a certian extent do we really have to "hide" our hobby or gender for fear of being labeled an attention seeker? screw that

I couldn't agree with you more! It's just another excuse for petty little w****s to try and brag themselves into cheap popularity and possibly a shag.

I mean, I'm a woman who enjoys playing videogames. Hell I'm a big Gears fan but I don't go bragging about it and saying "oooh! Look at silly lil 'ol me playing a boys game like Gears of War or CoD! Aren't I cool? ;) " (ugh CoD?? Seriously??) and then saying that, they expect guys to jump on them??

Honestly guys, girls/women like that aren't worth a scrap of your time. If you find women who enjoy them and don't brag about it like a emo-pop-tart then you're looking potentially at a really nice person :)

Not really. It's a valid thread with a valid topic that exists whether or not she chooses to acknowledge it. Her gender makes the point no less or more valid, it just makes her more interested in it and thus more likely to make a thread about it.

As Morgan Freeman(I believe it was him?) said in an interview about black history month: it will never end until we stop talking about it and treating it like its an issue. Black people don't need a special month and women don't need to be a legitimized sect of gamers, everyone just needs to shut up about it.

Also yeah gaming isn't a damn binary choice, its not 100% or nothing. Basically everyone plays video games, you can play once a month or you can play 8 hours a day. Where does the random line in gamer-notgamer come from?

I don't think anyone is saying that. Just that there are women who pretend to be gamers to get attention. I'm not talking about playing peggle and bejewelled. I'm talking about the ones you ask and they have never heard of Zelda or even Farmville...

Which is pretty sad and weird and tbh makes it hard for normal female gamers to get accepted. (For example that guy grilling me about Fallout 1 and 2 because I clearly must be lying)

Pffft. I bet you're just doing it to be cute. Must be really easy to snare a hot guy just by telling him about your basement full of triple-bagged rare comic books!

Although thinking about it, probably the sluttiest guy I know (though he's since settled down) is an unapologetically rabid comic book fan, so maybe "hey baby, check out my X-Men 1!" is actually a workable chat-up line...

Once I was at a club and a girl pulled me aside and said "I play WoW! I'm a gamer chick!". She really needs some better pick-up lines, because that was woeful. I laughed in her face and told her WoW sucks (my honest opinion).

... she didn't sleep with me ;__;
