At least you aren't in a country were games are despised or made fun of by the general public (Italy).
Seriously, some gamer girls I know have to hide their passion because otherwise they automatically become social outcasts.
It's almost the same even for guys (except for COD:BO and Fifa Soccer, durrr), and when you try to be in the middle ("I'm a gamer, yet I have other interests too") it becomes even harder.
Your gamer friends look at you as a jock and your non-gamer friends look at you as a nerd.
To sum it all up, it could be worse for you ladies, at least America is accepting.

I get the feeling that there are other ways to garner a guy's attention than relating on a gaming level. Obviously that won't hurt, and obviously it can mean everything to certain people, but it's sorta like music or anime or movies or whatever - you don't need to like every single thing they like. You'll find things to relate to them with, and go from there. And if they're open-minded (and not dicks), maybe they'll want to know more about the stuff you play.

Maybe they won't. It's not the end of the world.

But seriously, Alpha Centauri was fantastic, and everyone you're talking to should know that.
I mean seriously, just glance at the Greg Tito's review [http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/sid-meiers-alpha-centauri]. Honestly, it's the highest scoring game in PC Gamer magazine, and for good reason.

But yeah, point is, there's more to a girl than the games she plays, and people will probably be attracted to you for other things, with gaming coming as an afterthought, unless you're looking at geek 2 geek or a similar dating website.

It's just a matter of being at the right place. I went to Supanova a couple days ago and the concentration of gamers there was immense.
I'm not sure Supanova or other conventions are really a good place to hook up with people lol. When I was there you had the creepy gropers or creepers with cameras for up-skirting.
Really? I've never encountered anyone like that there.
The place wasn't full of creepers (only some) but what I meant was that I think witnessing or falling victim to a creeper is more likely than finding a potential partner at a con. Even my friend I went with to Supanova is guilty of groping a girl in the crowd, though he regretted it after (she was rather upset).
Well, sure there are people like that there, but if you just go up to someone who catches your eye and start talking to them, everything should be fine.
I wouldn't go about it that way but that's because I personally don't make advances on someone unless I know them enough and am attracted to them. (With that approach I've asked out a grand total of ONE girl. Who was interested but turned me down anyway.)
Normally I'd agree with you, but the environment and people at Supanova facilitates that approach really well.

Guess I'm glad I got into games after I found my boyfriend though I know a fair few gamers surprisingly.

Oh, I wish I could find a girl I could discuss Mass Effect with! Yeah, it's just the stigma gaming still unfortunately carries with it for all those who don't understand our shared hobby. Male and female gamers alike are thought of as "a bit weird" by their contempories. Be yourself, and you won't have any problem attracting a nice gamer lad.
Haha I've driven my room mate insane with mass Effect... xD I'd say it's one of my favourite games... But I guess I could say that about most Bioware games... So I'll just say that I really like Bioware games :p
Yes but the trick is to FIND a nice gamer lad :p There is one nice lad working in my local game store... But eh... No courage 8D
go for it !

You dont need a gamer though, i prefer my partner to not be, to (in an overly dramatic way) pull me out of the gaming world and into her world, but thats me! When i think of 2gamers i think of that 45 year old couple with kids in an MMO, that let the tv raise their kids while they do raids in warcraft for 5 hours a day ... scares me

If you do want a gamer, think that guys prolly have it harder ^^ hanging around the game store might help you find them, aslong as you dont turn into the freaky girl that rents 15 games a day :D but youre dutch and pretty ! youll be alright, veel succes, komt wel goed

Now you are touching onto another issue though;
She will gladly take you into her world, girsl seems to love to "change" a guy.
But you can't take her int yours, because she is afraid to catch the nerd.

That is why I personally would like a girl with at least an interest in something geeky, so that I can share my life with her. Why the hell would I want to give up all of what makes me happy, for a girl (Who may or may not make me happy)?

Even better, Holland seems to be actually, from my experiences when I traveled there and the times I visited my oma, a lot more accepting and open minded than many other countries(except in the political/sociological context in one specific case, but let's not talk about that), although Europe is quite lacking in the acceptance of videogames as a recognized form of art/entertainment other than "kids stuff".
Going back to the point and going off of what you said in other posts, I disagree with the fact that you should "hold back" whenever you hear somebody ask you about games or the games YOU play, it's your passion so why hold back? It sometimes scares people away because they don't expect the reaction, but when someone who does understand listens, like a passionate gamer, he can only be happy that there are women who are just as passionate about videogames as he is. And if you're talking to non-gamers, or non-passionate-gamers, the two outcomes are the awkward backing off, because he's a dick, and if he really wants the conversation to keep going he'll either listen to you or talk back, one way or another!!
Also, the guy that said that people can't take such passion without being slightly afraid or uncomfortable, these guys just show that they're not interested OR that they can't demonstrate their interest, any guy who is truly interested will endure awkwardness in order to talk to the person he's interested to.

Gosh, I feel lucky to have a significant other that's just as dorky as me. We actually met through a mutual friend, and hit it off because we both played Animal Crossing. We exchanged friend codes, and a relationship ensued. We have a lot of other stuff in common too though, like a love of reading, we enjoy cooking together, we love the same music, and a host of other fun things too. I think a relationship needs to be built on more than one mutual interest alone. Even if he's not much into gaming, maybe you can find another thing you have in common?

Gaming I think, could be replaced by any other activity and you might get the same uneasy reaction from whoever you're talking to. Some people just have no hobbies, or no particular passion for anything, so they'll feel uncomfortable when you begin talking about your passion, be it gaming or anything else.

dont know how serious youre being

but I mean really, sure peopel liek that probably exists, but "gamer" doesnt have to be that, its more about just having some common ground, and theres more to people than their interests/passions, I see no problem with both peopel in a coupel being into games because a realtionship would be built on more than gaming

I mean sure if gaming is the only thing that defines you...if its your world (as your example shows) thats a problem, but then again thats also more a sympton than a cause

The problem is that most non-gamer people don't quite understand why a person that plays videogames spends time on them, to them it's like a waste of time, that's why gamers look for other gamers, it's just easier to understand because it's a shared passion, while it's harder on a relationship when your girl/boyfriend thinks that you're wasting time on some "silly" thing.

Never knew that gamer women would have as hard of a time finding a mate as gamer men.

But then again, I got married at 17 to a very intelligent and loving gamer man (with parents consent, of course), so I guess I should count myself lucky. =)

EDIT: as of this post, I've been awake for almost 24 hours (hubby's putting together a presentation together for one of his classes, and I really don't like to go to bed without him, nor he without me.)

I'm getting married soon. I guess that you naturally start to moderate the amount of gaming you do, even if your spouse is a gamer. With work and stuff, I just said "Hey, if I wanna game, then why don't I make it something we can do together?" We're working on L.A. Noire right now, it's about 100 times more fun if you don't play it alone. The key is to make it something that strengthens the relationship, not a point of compromise or contention.

well its not that black and white and its not that she doesnt want to "catch the nerd" its that id prefer to do that part alone hah :p and NOT end up like that weird married couple i mentioned. I wouldnt give up what i had but enrich it whilest getting to know her, if that makes more sence

gamer is a pretty bad term for what we do anyway, if you meet someone who is a "gamer" you might have nothing more in common with them than with someone who is a non-gamer, someone who plays only shooters vs someone who only plays simulators for example. Theres always a tiney bit of common ground i guess. I see what Vault is saying

Same with 2 people liking music, one classic other rap.

So yeah. I noticed there are bizarrely many topics about gamers(male) having problems with getting girls.

Just wanted to say it's not all that easy for girls either. (sadly)
I'm a gamer girl.. And yeah for me that hasn't worked out at all. Maybe it's just the lack of male gamers in my environment. But I wonder if more girls have been experiencing this problem.

For instance you're at a party talking to a nice guy... And realize you've ended up talking about Mass Effect. And the guy is like: Riiiiight... *backs off*
It's funny how non gaming guys are just as freaked out as girls... Oh well. Just curious after thoughts, and if more girls have experienced this problem.

Damn girl I would never let a girl bring me down about games just more stuff to talk about on a date so yeah

Why do people think we have to identify ourselves as 'gamers'?

If you really can't find anything else to talk about apart from games, it's not surprising people back off. Because that's pretty sad. You have to know who you're talking too, what are they interested in?

Getting into a random conversation and talking about games as if they're your only interest is obviously going to put them off.

Fuck, I love me some game fun, but if you really had nothing else to talk about. I'd be bored too.

Try broadening your interests a little.

You can't go wrong with books and films. Maybe a smidge of philosophy or pop science. Current affairs, politics.

Fuck, you can even scrape the bottom of the barrel and talk about celebrities... but that's not something I've been forced to resort too.

Picking up a paper now n then doesn't hurt you. And you'll have a lot more to talk about next time you're trying to chat up a non-gamer.

Know your target.
Eh games is not the only thing I talk about x'DD I actually know a lot about current affairs and politics (And art and theater) because I always listen to the news channel when I work. And I've learned not to talk about games. But I can't help it when people ASK about the games I play. It's just.. Then I end up giving my way too long explanations -.- I should stop telling about story lines and how interesting they are.. and maybe just go into the technical details to explain in short what makes the game special and interesting... It would be a whole lot shorter than a hand full of details that I like personally.

Well if you're all about storyline then I'm kind of curious in that regard :) I'm quite a heavy based story gamer, just the only exception to that is Choices in game, it's not that i don't mind that, but it takes away what the game itself has to tell, instead of what i make of it. which i always have allot of issue with I'm more curious about different perspective then my own :) Choice in a game always makes the game by your own moral standards or more of ambitious path, or just evil. Own choices.... wait at least in my own experience is and feels always cliché

I'll be honest haven't played Mass Effect yet waiting for a Trilogy box because this might be the exception i have been looking for.

I only JUST got up to date. had a PS3 for about a year, and now I finally got my fuck-off awesome Gaming PC going. Now I'm miles ahead of my friends, the other day I picked up Crysis 2 and DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO LOOK AT THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FUCK YEAH.
I'm still way behind. I'm hoping this laptop can handle Bioshock with integrated graphics. I'm also contemplating installing XP to play the early C&C games and Deus Ex which I chanced upon and picked up for about $2 second hand. I don't know whether to hack away at that stupid HP case on the partially broken computer to get the DVD drive out or if I'm just an idiot >_<

I don't think I can be bothered trying to keep up to date, I can't miss superior graphics and all that when I've never played anything with them, and I should save money.

That's true. It's not exclusively gamers that catchy my attention, just generally guys who are somewhat intelligent and introspective with a little boyish immaturity and creativity. There are plenty of different ways to relate to people.

I have varied interests that I'm familiar enough with to feel like I identify with them somewhat, but I'm never fanatical or knowledgeable enough to feel like anything is a niche, if I could say that. Gaming is one of those things. I guess having a slight interest or even tolerance of games would be enough for some guys, though.

A reason I posted what I did was because I was thinking of doing games design at uni because I saw it as a very versatile art, despite not having played a lot of games, but I didn't end up deciding to do it because it seemed to be for people who were very fanatical and knowledgeable. It would be good for my social life if I was at uni.

Anyway, Alpha Centauri just doesn't seem to be popular with people my age, it's a shame though. I was lucky I had an older brother who put it on the family computer.

this is because gamer girls aren't "available" for very long. has to do with the whole "omg its a girl gamer!!! must get before the other alpha-nerds get her" mentality... and yes there is a hierarchy in Nerd-Dom.
Wait, what? There's a hierarchy? What hierarchy??

If I was at a party and a girl started talking about mass effect, I'd have thought I'd hit the jackpot.

Just keep up with the mass effect talk, surely one day someone else will be into it.
